Ultrametabolism Class, Ch.1, The Starvation Myth

These notes are from Dr. Mark Hyman’s book, “UltraMetabolism,” which we are going through on Sunday nights at our church, FBC, Athens.  It’s a book about health, and I invite you to come and join our journey to health and “caring for the temple,” the temple of the HOLY SPIRIT. HE dwells in every born again believer in CHRIST JESUS and we are learning together how to take care of these temples.  That’s quiet a challenge in this day and time with all the pesticides, fertilizers, gentically engineered food, antibiotics, hormones, plastics, etc, that has changed our food supply.  Beyond that we live in a sea of chemicals in our homes, schools, work places, athletic fields, etc.  that our body has a difficult time keeping up with to detox.  And i haven’t even mentioned the medicines that we all take when we are sick, along with vaccines…all these things can cause our bodies to be sick. There is a path,  a way to learn how to detox, eat healthy food, and build our bodies up with nutritional supplements so we can process and get rid of the onslaught of chemicals we take in. This book focuses on helping us to get healthy, and being able to lose weight as a result.     If you can, come and join us at 5:00 p.m. It’s a fast paced 50 minutes, cause there’s so much good information each week to cover.  Then plan to stay and worship with us at 6:00 p.m.

If you can’t join us, check this blogsite each week, and see if i’ve posted the notes from the class. My prayer is that something that is shared on this site will be helpful to you and your loved ones in your journey.

May GOD richly bless you,

Ultrametabolism Class, Week 2

Devotion from “JESUS Lives”, Seeing HIS LOVE in YOUR LIFE,” by Sarah Young

“Dear souls! How little they know that the abiding in Christ is just meant for the weak, and so beautifully suited to their feebleness.  It is not the doing of some great thing, and does not demand that we first live a very holy and devoted life.  No, it is simply weakness entrusting itself to a HOLY ONE to be kept-the unfaithful one casting self on ONE WHO is altogether trustworthy and true.  Abiding in HIM is not a work that we have to do as a condition for HIS salvation, but a consenting to let HIM do all for us- the fruit and power of HIS redeeming love. Our part is simply to yield, to trust, and to wait for what HE has engaged to perform.” Andrew Murray, Abide in CHRIST, p. 18

Chapter 1- Ultrametabolism, the Starvation Myth

Myth 1: The Starvation Myth: Eat Less +Exercise More=Weight Loss

This past spring when Johnny ran for office, i was definitely an example of this, eating less, exercising more…i was riding my bicycle all over the place campaigning, and trying to eat the same, if not less, on a gluten free diet as best i could on the go.  I gained weight!

  • As Dr. Hyman said, and many of us believe,   you must be deceiving yourself.  We are hard on people who are overweight aren’t we?  This book, and my own struggles has really helped me to be understanding that many of us are overweight for reasons  beyond overeating, and not exercising enough.

The lady in our chapter who had tried every kind of diet and couldn’t lose weight, is an example of someone who has tried all manner of losing weight and you may be that person too.  In spite of eating healthy, exercising…my weight has gradually eased up through the years.  I have detoxed through a sauna which should help the weight loss too, and it may have.  I may weigh a lot more if i hadn’t done that…but there is something i’m still searching for to help me find the cause of my weight issues.   I know thyroid is one….and the next phase of my treatment is to try and detox my liver, and then on to heavy metals, which would affect my thyroid….mercury, chlorine, bromine. I’m not sure what else keeps our thyroid from working properly.  When i was able to take the Naturethroid for my thyroid, i was able to maintain at 170, but still my weight would not budge below that.

Dr. Sherry Rogers, has taught for years that plastics change our hormones, they are hormone mimics, and this keeps the weight on us too.  She says that plastics are the number one pollutants in our bodies.  We can’t escaped plastic, but we can make an effort to cut down on it, and detox it from our bodies….she recommends a far infrared sauna to help detox….along with a host of supplements.  You can read all about that in her book, Detoxify or Die

Dr. Hyman said he realized after many years of blaming the patient for their lack of willpower  for overeating and not exercising enough, he realized there must be more to the story….that’s why i like this book!

Dr. Hyman discovered the lady in our book was constantly dieting on a poor quality diet by having her keep a three day food diary.  This is constantly put her body in a low state of chronic low grade starvation.

He tested her resting metabolic rate, the amount of calories the body burns at rest and found she had a slow metabolism….she burned fewer calories than expected for her age.  Another test showed she had less muscle than expected for her body weight.

Last fall, i was consulting with a nutritionist, Dr. Jeffrey Moss, trying to figure out out to get my body to absorb nutrients without having to take IV’s.  One of the things he had me test was how much  body fat i had, by measuring my BFI, i think.  Then he wanted me to do weight bearing exercises three times a week, under the instruction of a trainer, which i also did.  Initially, i lost weight or inches, and then all of the sudden after CHRISTmas, and sometime during the campaign, i gained 10 pds.  To say that was discouraging….

One of the points Dr. Hyman mentioned is that fat burns 70 times fewer calories than muscle…this is why the weights are good to exercise with and build up muscle.  When we lose weight, and gain it back, it is all fat, which leads to a slower metabolism.

Eating the RIGHT FOODs- Whole, Unprocessed Food

I will add organic and non GMO to this: Why It’s Important to Eat Organic, and non Genetically Engineered Food….

  • A two-year long French feeding study designed to evaluate the long-term health effects of a genetically engineered corn found that rats fed Monsanto’s maize developed massive breast tumors, kidney and liver damage, and other serious health problems. The major onslaught of diseases set in during the 13th month
  • Female rats that ate genetically engineered corn died 2-3 times more than controls, and more rapidly, while the male GE-fed rats had tumors that occurred up to a year-and-a-half earlier than rats not fed GE corn
  • According to results from a 10-year long feeding study on rats, mice, pigs and salmon, genetically engineered feed causes obesity, along with significant changes in the digestive system and major organs, including the liver, kidneys, pancreas, genitals and more

Along with the Genetically Engineered corn article , we also talked about the BPA lining in canned goods causing cancer.  Here is an article about that:

http://healthyliving.msn.com/health-wellness/the-new-scary-threat-in-canned-soup

Important to get the lady in the chapter to eat whole unprocessed foods, and in quantities that exceeded her metabolic rate led to steady and sustained weight loss.  When she did this, it led to a steady and sustained weight loss, getting her off the yo-yo, seesaw, merry-go-round-of diets.  As he did with many of his patients, he advised her to eat more, not less to lose weight!

One of the first things Dr. Moss , the nutritionist did with me was asked me to keep a diary too, and he was concerned that i wasn’t eating enough.  When i recorded my calories, i actually was eating enough, but i sure was trying to watch it ! Looking back, probably during the campaign i wasn’t eating enough calories for the exercise i was doing each day, thus i put on weight, because GOD designed our bodies to keep us from starving…we are hardwired that way in our genes.

  • No one wants to be fat…the trick is learning how to tune up our metabolism and use our bodies natural calorie burning capabilities to help lose weight AND get healthy.  Believing the common oversimplification about our weight that culture promotes won’t help sustain long term weight loss and health….our bodies are much more complex than this.  The article above talks about genetically engineered foods making us obese too.
  • What makes us fat or thin does have something to do with how much we eat and exercise.  But the oversimplification stops there.  Complex forces govern our weight and metabolism….no one simple reason why an individual may have trouble with their weight.

Medical Research has shown that their are 7 Principles or Keys to Weight Loss and UltraMetabolism is founded on these keys.  In part 2 we will learn about these principles and practical ways to implement changes so we can optimize our HEALTH and lose weight.  Remember Matt. 6:33, “Seek ye first the kingdom of GOD, and HIS righteousness,” and all these things will be added unto you.”  In this class, we are going to seek the LORD, first, seek to be healthy second….and rejoice when we lose the weight for those of us seeking to do that!

Analogy, Dr. Hyman used, telling someone who’s overweight that all he or she has to do is eat less and exercise more is like telling someone who’s poor that all that have to do is make more and spend less…this simple equation ignores many factors

Starvation syndrome: The Real Problem with the Old Way at Weight Loss

When we buy into the idea that eating less will make us lose weight, we restrict calories.  Most of the popular diets do just that….The problem is calorie restriction almost always backfires because our body thinks it’s starving to death and sets off chemical process inside us that force us to eat more.

WHO classifies a diet containing less than 2,100 calories a day for the average man, and less than 1800 for the average woman as a starvation diet…average woman dieting in America is trying to eat less than 1500 calories a day .  That means she is constantly in a state of starvation  every day.  Our culture praises starvation and excessive weight loss.

Models are 25 percent thinner now than 40 years ago….do  this by binging, purging, using laxatives, smoking, drinking diet sodas and overexercise.  This triggers a cascade of molecules in the blood designed to make them rebound from their severe diets and overeat.  Thus they bing and purge even more rigorously leading to an ugly cycle that works in opposition to their boy’s natural  chemical construction GOD made the body with to save it from starvation. GOD designed our bodies to keep us from starving!

We may have fallen into this ourselves…we restrict our calories needed to make our body function properly and we set off the same molecular cascade inside ourselves, resulting in hunger signals to strong to ignore.  We rebound and gain back the weight we have lost. In most cases we gain back more than we have lost…why because we gain back fat, and fat burns 70 % fewer calories than lean muscle. Welcome to the starvation syndrome!

One of the most important principles of weight loss is never to starve yourself.  The question is whether or not you are eating enough calories, not whether or not you are eating too many.  We need a baseline to know how much to eat to keep our body from going into starvation mode.

Reasons Most Diets Fail:  People Restrict too Much!

We allow the number of calories we consume to drop below our resting metabolic rate, the amount of energy needed to run our metabolism for the day. The average person needs ten times our weight in pds.  If you weigh 180 pds, you would need 1800 calories at the minimum you need to eat each day.  See http://www.ultrametabolism.com for an easy guide to caluculate your resting metabolic rate.

If you eat less than that amount, your body will instantly perceive danger, turn on the alarm system that protects us from starvation, and slow down our metabolism.  As a consequence, we go into starvation mode and start eating and eating once we stop the diet-the classic rebound weight gain.

When most people go on a diet, they are generally making themselves fatter.  Each time they diet they lose muscle.  When the diet fails, the weight regained is fat.  Dieting makes you fat.

Ultrametabolism isn’t so much a diet as a way of eating….a way of healthy eating, that will teach us how to care for our temple’s and our family and friends in this day of so many dangers to our foods, including pesticides, fertilizers, genetically modified organisms, just to name a few assaults to our food.

Summary:

  • Losing weight is about more than just eating less and exercising more.
  • It’s not your fault that you are struggling with your weight…well, that depends:). He  says because our feeding behavior is controlled by the limbic brain, designed to keep us from starving ourselves to death
  • You have to eat more than our resting metabolic rate, or our body will think we are starving.  When we eat less than our RMR or resting metabolic rate, we tend to gain weight rather than lose it.
  • Don’t “diet”-if you eat too few calories, you will only gain weight in the long run.

Next Week, Ch. 2, The Calorie Myth:  All Calories are Not Created Equal

If you are a child of GOD, you have been chosen by GOD for a task of supreme significance-to be a bearer and nurturer of spiritual life by carrying the life of the LORD JESUS to others.” Nancy Leigh DeMoss

We are therefore CHRIST’s ambassadors, as though GOD were making HIS appeal through us.” II Cor. 5:20
