Whole Grains

Whole grains, legumes and nuts provide excellent nutrition-in particular magnesium to balance the calcium in dairy products-but only if prepared carefully. These foods are rich in nutrients but they contain anti-nutrients that can block absorption of minerals, interfere with digestion and irritate the intestinal tract…none of which should occur while you are pregnant or preparing for pregnancy.

To prepare them properly soaking whole grains or freshly ground flour in a warm, slightly acidic medium, such as water with a small amount of lemon juice, vinegar, buttermilk, yogurt or kefir. The combination breaks down anti-nutrients, increases vitamin content, liberates minerals and makes the grains more digestible. Legumes also need to be well soaked and well cooked.

Nuts are our best source of magnesium but are high in phytic acid, which can block mineral assimilation, they are high in enzyme inhibitors, which can cause irritation and indigestion, and in oxalic acid, which can block calcium assimilation and lead to kidney stones. Nuts should be soaked in salt water for 6-8 hours then drained and dehydrated in a warm over or dehydrator -recipe in books.

Fresh Vegetables and Fruits

Sally Fallon says these are not nearly as nutrient dense as animal foods-the emphasis for a healthy pregnancy and optimal baby developments should be on meat and organ meats, dairy foods, eggs, seafood, and then fruits and veggies.

She says that fruits and veggies contain only a fraction of the nutrients per gram found in meats, dairy foods and organ meats. They are good sources of vitamin C, folate and minerals like magnesium. Most important, fruits and veggies make great vehicles for good fats, like butter and cream, and the nutrients in fruits and veggies are more easily assimilated when they are served with these healthy fats.

Leafy Green Vegetables- good source of FOLATE, critical nutrient for growing the baby. But they can also contain oxalate acid, which can block calcium uptake and form painful deposits in the joints, kidneys and other organs. Foods like spinach, chard, mustard greens and kale should be well cooked and serve with liberal amounts of butter, lard, or fat back.

Cruciferous vegetables like cabbage, broccoli and Brussels sprouts contain goitrogens that can block thyroid function and use up valuable iodine; they are fine if cooked, fermented and eaten in moderation.

You will get a lot more out of most fibrous vegetable is they are cooked. The human digestive tract is not designed to deal with a lot of raw fiber??? :). I know there are differing opinions about this. The nutritionist at the Environmental Health Clinic, Dr. Ron Overberg, recommended steaming veggies before eating them to help with digestion. They saw the sickest folks in the world out there with messed us guts, and he taught me that the sick gut cannot handle raw veggies.

High pectin fruits like apples, pears, and peaches may be more digestible if cooked, but many fruits can be eaten raw.

Do your best to purchase organic veggies, most pesticides can adversely affect the development of your baby (not to mention GMO’s today). Pesticides also tend to be high in cadmium, a toxic metal. There will be a lot more nutrition in vegetables and fruits that are raised without pesticides, produced locally, vine ripened and consumed in season…make sure the soil is healthy, just because “organic,” doesn’t mean it is necessarily more nutrient dense.


Our body needs salt-without salt we can’t digest carbs or protein. Cellular metabolism depends on the sodium from salt, and salt supports adrenal function. It plays a critical role in baby’s neurological development…sodium activates an enzyme needed for the production of glial cells in the brain-the cells that support logical and creative thinking.

Babies who consumed formula without salt suffered permanent neurological damage. Mothers need to maintain good sodium status throughout pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Best salt is unrefined salt, that provides sodium chloride, magnesium and many trace minerals. Regular salt doesn’t have these nutrients and it contains an aluminum compound to keep it from clumping.

It is also important to avoid all processed foods, fast foods and junk foods containing:

  • Trans fatty acids (partially hydrogenated oils)
  • Liquid commercial vegetable oils
  • Refined sweeteners such as sugar, high fructose corn syrup, yacon syrup, agave “nectar.”
  • Artificial sweeteners such as Equal, Nutrasweet and Splenda
  • White flour, boxed breakfast cereals and improperly prepared grains
  • Modern soy products
  • Caffeine and caffeine like substances (coffee, tea and chocolate)
  • Microwaved and irradiated food-borne

In addition, avoid:

  • Tap water containing fluoride, chlorine and other chemicals, but don’t buy water out of plastic and think you are doing better. Get a good water filter, Culligan is a good company, and if you can get a whole house filter to filter out the chlorine from your bath water and shower water where more chlorine is absorbed by the skin than drinking it. Mountain Valley Water is a company you can buy water in glass if you want to buy it…you can get it through Crystal Mountain Water company in our area and they deliver it to your house.
  • Exposure to pesticides, herbicides and industrial chemicals. If you must have your yard treated, use They seek to make your soil healthy with natural amendments to the soil. They use as little weed killer as possible. They won’t use any if you don’t want it.
  • Cigarettes
  • Alcohol
  • Vaccinations
  • Synthetic vitamins
  • Drugs, including prescription drugs

Last week we talked a bit about transfats but I wanted to go back and touch on this all important subject because it is so critical in our health and our developing baby.

Trans fats, margarines, shortenings and vegetable oils, are hidden in processed food like cookies, crackers, bread, pastries, chips, and other snack foods. Commercial fried food are another source of trans fats.

Trans Fats:

  • Interfere with growth and neurological development
  • Is associated with low birth weight, which is associated with many problems in the infant, including chronic illness like heart disease later in life.
  • Impair growth and interfere with learning ability
  • Even a small amount in the diet of the pregnant and nursing mom can reduce vision accuracy
  • they inhibit the receptors and enzymes in our cell membranes from receiving nutrients and getting rid of waste
  • Trans fats are the chief cause of type 2 diabetes, a condition in which the cell membrane receptors for insulin do not work.
  • Interfere with hormone production
  • disrupt sexual development and causing the infant to be less resistant to stress

Use raw butter and cream instead, make your own salad dressing using extra virgin olive oil, and use coconut oil for your cooking needs.

Avoid refined sweeteners in refined processed foods. Metabolizing sugar uses up large amounts of vitamins, minerals and enzymes and creates a roller-coaster of high and then low blood sugar levels.

Sugar consumption causes:

  • diabetes
  • hypoglycemia
  • more frequent infectious illness
  • heart disease
  • cancer
  • digestive problems
  • endocrine problems
  • infertility
  • skin problems
  • obesity
  • increased desire for alcohol, coffee and tobacco
  • Candida overgrowth
  • bone loss
  • dental decay
  • hyperactivity
  • violent tendencies and depression

High fructose corn syrup and its cousins agave “nectar” and yacon “syrup” are even worse than sugar, especially for the period of growth.

High fructose sweetener in soft drinks and many foods aimed at children causes:

  • serious abnormalities in test animals, particularly growing animals

Fructose has an effect on the liver and along with copper deficiency (widespread in the U.S.) interferes with the production of collagen. If you want a child who is sturdy and strong, who doesn’t injure easily, and whose liver is capable of dealing with environmental toxins, do your best to avoid high fructose corn syrup. Agave “nectar” or “syrup” and yacon “syrup” contain even more free fructose than high fructose corn syrup.

Artificial sweeteners such as Equal, Nutrasweet, and Splenda are not good alternatives.

Aspartame (Nutrasweet, Equal, AminoSweet) can cause:

  • severe neurological reactions including headaches, seizures and a dangerous drop in blood pressure
  • Linked to brain cancer and damage to the retina of the eye
  • Aspartame stimulates the release of insulin and plays havoc with neurotransmitters
  • Many people show increased food consumption on a diet containing aspartame

Splenda (or sucralose) in test animals developed:

  • a shrunken thymus gland (hence reduced immunity)
  • enlarged liver and kidneys
  • a decrease in red blood cells
  • and a tendency in diarrhea
  • most serious for those wishing a normal pregnancy and healthy children, sucralose caused prolonged or aborted pregnancy, low birth weight in offspring and reduced growth rate.

Many good natural sweeteners that parents can use in moderation without posing a threat to their baby:

  • raw honey
  • maple syrup
  • Rapadura (dehydrated cane sugar juice)
  • maple sugar

Soy products should be strictly avoided:

  • they are loaded with phytoestrogens that can cause hormonal imbalances and thyroid problems
  • oxalates and enzyme inhibitors that can cause extreme digestive distress
  • high levels of phytic acid that can block the uptake of important nutrients like zinc, calcium, iron and magnesium

Phytoestrogens are strong anti-fertility agents that may prevent you from becoming pregnant. If you consume soy foods while pregnant, these endocrine disruptors can cross the placenta and have an adverse effect on the infant. In rodents, even at very low levels, the main phytoestrogen in soy caused behavior changes, increased signs of stress, decreased social contact and altered sexual expression.

Food additives is another great concern…Americans consume nine pounds of additives per year, including preservatives, dyes, bleaches, emulsifiers, antioxidants, artificial and “natural” flavors, conditioners, extenders, anti-caking agents and thickeners.

The most dangerous food additive is the neurotoxic free glutamic acid, known as monosodium glutamate (MSG) often disguised as:

  • hydrolyzed vegetable protein
  • yeast extract
  • natural flavors”

Anything hydrolyzed, autolyzed or extracted is likely to contain free glutamic acid. Citric acid and sodium and calcium caseinates contain MSG as well as powdered milk added to reduced fat diary products, along with modern soy products added during processing.

Adrenal function:

She talks about the importance of leaving off caffeine-coffee, tea, soft drinks, energy drinks and chocolate (Dr. Hyman recommends dark chocolate as a good antioxidant). She said the “lift” you get from it, stimulates the secretion of adrenaline and the body has to work hard to bring the corticoid hormones back to homeostasis. Over time the result is nutrient depletion and adrenal exhaustion.

This is important to me because I have struggled with my adrenal function, as well as my Mom and I wonder if this theory is true:

An interesting theory holds that a woman with depleted adrenal function can “steal” adrenal hormones from her developing baby, condemning the baby to compromised adrenal function. The corticoid hormones produced by the adrenal glands regulate almost every aspect of our metabolism, including blood sugar levels, blood pressure, mineral metabolism, healing and stress responses and they are involved in the production of sex hormones.”

One of the most important gifts you can give to your child is a strong, well functioning adrenal glands, and that means to kick the caffeine habit well before you conceive.

Microwaves-ditch the microwave and stick to old fashioned cooking methods. Microwaves and irradiated foods destroys nutrients and renders the delicate fatty acids rancid. A good substitute for the microwave is a counter top convection toaster oven. This cooks food rapidly and evenly using old fashioned heat.

Chapter One, Part 2 Preparing for your Baby, Nourishing Traditions

Since studying how important Vit. A is last week, I found out my levels of Vit. A are low. I don’t know how long they have been that way, but I am practicing some of these things to help get it up. I sure do appreciate Catherine Smith letting me try some of her Green Pasture cod liver oil, That is a fermented Cod Liver Oil and the brand that Sally Fallon Morrell recommends in her book. You can get raw butter at the Madison City Farmer’s Market on Saturday, and the Greene St. Market on Thursday evening. Raw butter is a rich source of vitamins A,D, K, and E.

Liver: was considered a sacred food in almost all traditional cultures, necessary for strength, stamina, and the production of beautiful, healthy babies. It is the most nutrient dense food.

Benefits of Liver (clean, grass fed) in preparing for pregnancy:

  • Beef liver contains over 50,000 IU vitamin A per 100 grams, chicken, duck and goose liver about 30,000 IU, and about 110 mg vitamin B12…over 6o times the amount found in beef.
  • Liver is an excellent source of phosphorus, iron, zinc, copper, vitamin B2, vitamin B6, choline, biotin and folate.
  • Liver contains more vitamin C per gram than apples or carrots
  • Chicken. duck and goose liver best sources of vitamin K2 which is critical for the development of baby’s bone structure, teeth, blood and brain. Working with Vit. A and D, liberal amounts of K2 ensures, attractive facial development, with plenty of space for the teeth to come in straight. Vitamin K2 is also found in the fats of grass-fed animals, such as meat fats, butter and cheese, but poultry liver is the best source of vitamin K2 in western diets.

Some ways to eat liver: fried in bacon fat with bacon and onions is one way to enjoy liver, pate, liverwurst…recipes are in the book…or you can visit our restaurant for fried chicken livers:). Not as healthy as making them yourselves, but we do serve them! .

Cooking lamb or beef liver, rich in vitamin A, in lard or bacon fat, rich in vitamin D, provides a synergistic combination of these two vitamins.

You can get clean beef liver from Dixon Family Meats, . They are a wonderful Christian family. They are at the Greene St. Market, but they also come to Madison once a month and deliver.

If you can’t tolerate eating liver, you can take desiccated liver capsules…

The important thing is to prepare for conception by eating liver in one form or another at least twice a week and continue the practice during pregancy. It will help ensure a healthy child, and give you strength, stamina and a healthy outlook throughout you pregnancy.


Dr. Soto, recommends getting Pacific Ocean seafood over the Atlantic, and he surely doesn’t recommend the bottom feeding seafood of the Gulf due to the oil spill. He worked as an environmental doctor down there helping the people to recover from the oil spill.

Sally Fallon acknowledges the dangers of getting mercury from seafood, as well as PCBs, and other toxins, but she says that those who eat two or more servings of fish per week have babies of higher intelligence. The benefits are credited to the omega 3 fatty acids in fish, but it is also a good source of iodine and other trace minerals that support neurological function. She quotes a study involving fourteen thousand women and children showing the benefits of eating most types of seafood during pregnancy far outweigh any risks. The most important finding: women who eat twelve ounces or less of seafood per week were almost 50 percent more likely to have children with low IQ scores compared with women who exceeded this amount. At age three, children whose mothers ate less seafood during pregnancy were more likely to have social and communication problems with their peers and by ages seven and eight, they tended to have more behavioral problems and trouble with fine motor skills.

Mercury is not limited to the fish we eat. It can be in the air, in processed foods (such as high fructose corn syrup) , in amalgam fillings, which outgasses mercury fumes directly into the mouth and brain. And the absorption rate of mercury from fish depends on a number of factors, including the health of our gut flora. Healthy bacteria in the intestinal tract will actually trap food-borne mercury and prevent its absorption. Adequate selenium and glutathione levels in the body also protect against mercury. The best source of glutathione is raw milk!

This book, in the context of a healthy diet, recommends fish consumption before and during pregnancy, although they do caution against overconsumption of large fish like swordfish and tuna, which tend to concentrate mercury, and commercial freshwater fish like catfish (which can be very high in pollutants like PCB’s).

She mentions the benefits of fish eggs:

  • Rich in vitamins B12, vitamin K2, cholesterol, choline, selenium, calcium, magnesium, vitamin A, zinc, iodine, trace minerals and DHA-all necessary for healthy reproductive and the development of the endocrine system, the nervous system and the brain. Fresh meat can and should be included in the diet every day-lamb, beef, pork, goat, poultry and game. Whenever possible, this meat should come from naturally raised, grass-fed animals. Meatshould always be consumed with the fat, and in the case of poultry with the skin. The fat provides valuable nutrients and makes it easier for you to digest the meat.

Meat is a rich source of complete protein, iron and zinc, all needed for building baby’s body, blood and brain: meat fats provide important minerals, fatty acids and the anti-cancer substance CLA. And like butter, meat fats provide arachidonic acid (AA) so important for neurological development, gut integrity and beautiful rash-resistant skin.

Oily Fish or Lard

Don’t be afraid to cook in lard-pasture-fed lard is stable and healthy, and it provides a rich source of Vit D to balance the large amounts of Vit A in the liver. Oily fish like anchovies and sardines are another source of Vit. D and the bones are a good source of calcium.

Coconut Oil

This is a wonderful fat that will strengthen your immune system and protect you against infection, will give you plenty of energy without causing unwanted weight gain, will nourish healthy bacteria in the colon, and may even contribute to the optimal development of your baby’s brain and nervous system. Bone Broth

Homemade broth made from the bones of (clean, antibiotic, hormone free, etc) chicken, duck, beef, lamb or fish is a gelatin rich food that will help you digest your food, contribute to strong bones, tendons and connective tissue in both yourself and your developing baby and protect the integrity of the digestive tract. If you have trouble digesting meat, adding a gelatin rich sauce solves the problem. Catherine told me about a bone broth gelatin supplement you can purchase from Amazon that is recommended by . She is tied in with the Weston A. Price Foundation.

Bone broth is rich in the amino acid, glycine. Glycine is needed for the building of the placenta and protection of both mother and baby from toxins and stress.

It is important for the expectant mother to liberally match her egg and muscle meat consumption with glycine rich skin and bones, and also with folate rich liver, legumes(beans) and greens to safely dispose of methionine. Otherwise it can disrupt cellular communication, leading to a variety of problems such as mental disorders or cancer.

Lacto-Fermented Condiments and Beverages-

Lacto-fermentation preserves foods, including veggies, fruits, milk, meat and fish. It involves bacteria working primarily on sugars and starches to produce lactic acid, a natural preservative. Lacto -fermented foods are rich in enzymes, lactic acid and good bacteria, which together help digestion.

Good bacteria in the gut are critical to good health. In addition to their role in digestion, they keep potentially harmful microorganisms like Candida in balance and parasites at bay, they strengthen the immune system, they produce important nutrients, and even produce feel-good chemicals. Most important, good bacteria coat the intestinal tract with a biofilm that serves as our first line of defense against environmental toxins. Good bacteria lining the gut will latch on to mercury and take it out of the body; ditto for toxins like dioxins. Scientists are beginning to realize that the good bacteria lining our intestinal tract provide an important component of our immune system.

Good bacteria in mom’s gut will also flourish in her birth canal and even in her milk ducts. The bacteria that baby encounters during birth are the bacteria that will populate his own intestinal tract. It is critical that pregnant women encourage the growth of beneficial bacterial in the gut AND SINCE THESE GOOD BACTERIA PRVENT THE ABSORPTION OF ENVIRONMENTAL CHEMICALS THAT CAN HARM THE DEVELOPING BABY, MOTHERS NEED TO ENCOURAGE THE GROWTH OF GOOD GUT BACTERIAL WELL BEFORE BABY IS CONCEIVED.The vehicle for lining the intestinal tract with good bacterial and keeping them there is lacto fermented foods which include:

  • Raw sauerkraut, cucumbers, carrots, beets, turnips, onions, herbs, fruits, apples, berries can be done this way-recipes are in the book.
  • Buttermilk, yogurt and kefir are also lacto fermented foods and especially beneficial if they are made at home from raw milk rather than in a factor-recipes in book.
  • Salami and gravlax (Scandinavian lacto-fermented salmon)

I bought some ginger ale at the Madison City Market that is lacto fermented.

If you are new to lacto-fermented foods you should introduce them slowly…not like me yesterday. I ate a big serving of the fermented cabbage and carrots yesterday and I felt really badly yesterday evening and this morning….really bad…start slow!

Remember, detoxification needs to happen well before conception and NOT during pregnancy.

Last week I spoke about the older women teaching the younger women…our mandate from Titus 2:4….this morning as I thought about these things, GOD showed me that HE is building a beautiful garden through our lives….that will reach our family, friends, and future generations for all eternity. This garden is made up of CHRIST and HIS creation, including the physical and the spiritual. I don’t know exactly how to separate the two, and these class certainly combines them.

In Chapter One of the Nourishing Traditions Book of Baby and Child Care, it puts a primary emphasis on nutritional preparation before and during pregnancy more than any other book on this subject and more than any other subject in this book. The diet of both mother and father before conception, and the diet of the mother during pregnancy, will determine to a very large extent the appearance, intelligence and physical health of their baby AND contribute to their child’s emotional and mental and most important of all spiritual well being.

No other society is as careless about preparing for pregnancy and birth as our own (and what about preparing spiritually for baby’s welfare too-my words). Our haphazard approach is in sharp contrast to the wisdom and dedication of Dr. Weston A. Price observed in traditional cultures, which often practices a period of special feeding for men and women before conception, and always provided special nutrient-dense foods during pregnancy, lactation and growth. Even worse is our modern appalling advice of a society that advocates low fat or vegetarian diets, or endorses processed foods for pregnant women and growing children. Our society has lost its way (when we lose our way spiritually, every other area of our lives follows- my words) and we have sacrificed the health of our young people to convince, dogma and financial gain.

When baby is born too early, or with a birth defect, or exhibits abnormal growth or behavior, genetics, often gets the blame. By blaming genetics, we absolve ourselves of the responsibility. But modern research has shown that nutrition in fact affects the expression of the genes, and poor nutrition can so adversely affect genetic expression that defects” persist for several generations.

Give example of my own story….i am the baby of five, mom was probably depleted nutritionally, was sick from ? , gene tests show that I have difficulty processing chemicals.

However, the way that I eat, expresses those genes, so I have a responsibility for my health, not just say, oh well, I don’t have the right genes so I will always be this way.

The production of healthy babies is a partnership between ourselves and our CREATOR. GOD provides the genetic blueprint, while we the parents provide the building materials. Together we build magnificent body temples to house the souls of future generations, the souls who will make the planet a better place, the souls who will ensure that peace and justice reign on the Earth.

****These are my words…this is most important in order for the Body of CHRIST to be able to be salt and light, we need to teach our daughter’s and sons how to grow children spiritually healthy and physically healthy. I am not saying that GOD doesn’t use the weak, HE is mighty through the weak as HE promises, but HE also has given us knowledge to take care of these temples so we can be missionaries and HIS ambassadors and have the strength we need to carry out HIS kingdom work. HE gives us the wisdom and this study contains some of that wisdom to care for our bodies and our children’s health so that we can be engaged in the spiritual warfare that lies ahead.

Some of Christ’s greatest warriors are weak in body, and this morning the LORD reminded me of CHARLES SPURGEON, the prince of preachers and his afflictions…among them gout and depression. His wife also suffered from great physical affliction for at least a quarter of a century. One of my dearest spiritual mom’s Betty Eudy, has been such a great spiritual encouragement and prayer warrior for my family, she has suffered greatly physically. Not saying that GOD doesn’t or can’t use the weak, HE uses us mightily, but HE is also in the healing business and preventing the illness to start with. That is my heart to bring you the information HE is and has been teaching me for the past 20 years….

Sally Fallon says she writes these words not to frighten or discourage , but to inspire you to adopt the best dietary practices you can, because the rewards, both to yourself and your offspring are very great. My words…as one who has struggled most of my adult life with health challenges, I say AMEN.

What is a Healthy Baby?

A healthy baby is robust, well formed, energetic and free of birth defects. A healthy baby has a broad face, strong bones, wide palate, allowing the teeth to grow in straight. A healthy baby has clear skin, good eyesight and keen hearing, a good immunes system, rarely catches a cold or gets sick, has a good digestive system, nurses well, does not spit up food, has normal bowel movements, free of allergens, rashes, asthma, and a good disposition, rarely cries, is cheerful, outgoing, smiles frequently, sleeps well, alert, curious, babbles, takes directions early, passes her milestones such as sitting up, crawling, standing and speaking on schedule, responds to affection, but can amuse herself and play alone without needing attention. Healthy babies grow up into healthy, intelligent, attractive, self disciplined and high functioning adults.

Good nutrition (and detox before getting pregnantmy words) ensures a truly healthy baby. This nutrition needs to start before a baby is conceived. If you have been consuming the standard American diet, full of junk food or a so called “healthy” low fat, vegetarian or vegan diet, you should count two to three years of preparation before conception. This seems like a long time, but a malnourished or depleted body needs time to recover, and that recovery needs to take place before, not during your pregnancy.

One thing I do want to caution about. Some people have allergies to some of these good foods and I am one of them. I am allergic to milk and casein a protein in milk, but I’m working on these issues, as GOD continues to heal my body. So if you have problems with these foods, check for food allergies. I do the NAET treatments ( which has helped to eliminate a lot of my allergies and i’m very grateful for them.

Cod Liver Oil

Cod Liver Oil

Until the end of the Second World War, cod liver oil, served as the number one supplement for pregnant women and growing children-doctors, nurses, health officials, teachers, ministers, Sunday school teachers and government agencies, all urged the population to take cod liver oil to protect themselves from infectious disease and ensure strong bones and teeth. Books on infant feeding recommended cod liver oil starting in the third month of life, even cod liver oil drops as early as three weeks.

When antibiotics, came on the scene, the campaign for cod liver oil waned. Today the government discourages cod liver oil, especially for pregnant women, claiming that the vitamin A in cod liver oil can contribute to birth defects. (Sidebar) p.17

Vit A in the Cod Liver Oil is the most important reason for taking this old fashioned supplement.

Vitamin A is critical for:

  • optimal expression of the genetic potential-my detox genes not expressed well
  • for strong bones
  • healthy skin
  • keen eyesight
  • mineral metabolism
  • hormone production
  • mental stability
  • ability to plan for the future and stick to tasks

Vitamin A helps the various organs to develop properly such as the heart, liver and lungs. A woman with low vitamin A may suffer a miscarriage or the heart may form incorrectly resulting in a serious birth defect.

Recent research shows that even partial vitamin A deficiency affects the sensitive developing central nervous system.

It plays a key role in the development of the visual system, the retina of the eye, the inner ear, the spinal cord, the craniofacial area including the sinus passages, dental arches, thymus, thyroid and parathyroid glands.

Vit A is required in mid gestation for baby lung development. New research shows that Vitamin A deficiency results in a reduced number of nephrons (kidney cells) in the kidney. Lower numbers of nephrons mean the kidneys will not work at optimal levels and the person may have to have dialysis later in life….

Vitamin A holds the key to our bodies develop symmetrically while the inner organs are arranged asymmetrically. A shorter right foot or right eyes is a sign of mild Vitamin A deficiency in utero. (Backyard Bible Club Baby).


Sally Fallon says that you can’t get enough Vit. A from leafy green plant food and orange yellow fruit and veggies to meet the high requirements for reproduction and pregnancy.

She warns that Vit. A consumed without Vit D can cause problems. Vitamin A taken alone can cause deficiencies in Vit. D resulting in bone problems. She said that Vit. A and D work together, and when there is adequate intake of vitamin D, vitamin A is toxic only at extremely high levels.

Cod liver oil provides Vit. A and D together…difficult to obtain adequate amounts in our Western diet, but traditional cultures consume in large amounts. Vit D works together with Vit. A to ensure optimal development of the baby. Vitamin D consumed before pregnancy prepares mother’s bones, teeth, organs, and brain for the stresses of pregancy.

Fathers should also take cod liver oil-

Vitamin A in Fathers needed for:

  • sperm production
  • protects sperm against damage from environmental chemicals such as dioxins and bisphenol A

She said the best source of vitamins A and D is high vitamin fermented cod liver oil. She recommends for the source of cod liver oil.

Cod liver oil also provides DHA, an important omega 3 fatty acid needed for brain development.

The Weston A. Price Foundation recommends 20,000 IU of Vitamin A and 2,000 IU of Vitamin D from Cod liver oil during pregnancy.

  • 70 percent chance of reduced risk of type 1 diabetes
  • protects against dangers of low birth weight
  • children scored higher on intelligence tests at age four whose mom’s took cod liver oil compared with those whose mom’s took corn oil. Vitamins A and D are necessary for the optimal formation and function of the brain, the DHA also is very necessary for brain function.

She said that skate liver oil is another good choice,as is halibut liver oil, but not ordinary fish oils. She said they are made using a highly industrial process, tend to be rancid, and aren’t good sources of vitamins A and D. Also, using regular fish oil during pregnancy may be associated with excessive bleeding

Eggs and Egg Yolks

Egg whites provide perfect protein and egg yolks contain a powerhouse of nutrients, chief among them being choline, which is critical for the development of the brain. Rats feed three times the normal choline during pregnancy, their offspring are born with remarkably resilient nervous systems. These offspring have lifelong 30 percent increase in visuospatial and auditory memory; they grow old without developing any age- related senility, they are protected against the assaults of neurotoxins, and have an enhanced ability to focus on several things at once.

Egg yolks are the richest source of choline. Sally Fallon says you need four yolks to satisfy even the modest government recommendations, but one white is enough a day. Choline also occurs in liver and dairy foods, and to a lesser extend in meats (especially pork), nuts, and legumes. To ensure an adequate supply she said you need to consume at least two egg yolks per day- and more is better. Add extra yolks to scrambled eggs and omelets, consume raw egg yolks in smoothies, eat them in custards, souffles, and homemade ice cream or mix them with hot rice or oatmeal.

Egg yolk are a wonderful source of cholesterol, an important nutrient that’s been demonized by our government officials and conventional medicine. Prospective parents should in no way limit cholesterol intake-all sex hormones are made from cholesterol as are all the hormones the body makes to deal with stress. Mothers need extra cholesterol to help the baby develop the brain and nervous system, as well as the intestinal tract and a cholesterol rich diet should continue throughout the period of growth and throughout life.

Egg yolks also provide vitamins A, D, K2, and E as well as folate, biotin and important minerals like iron, zinc and selenium.

The levels of vitamins and minerals will be higher if the eggs come from hens allowed to roam on green pasture in the sunlight. In one study conducted by Mother Earth News, folate levels were over two hundred times higher in pastured eggs than in chickens raised in confinement. Organic eggs are second best with supermarket eggs coming in third. Even if supermarket eggs are your only choice, don’t be afraid to eat liberally of the yolks, the future intellectual ability of your child may depend on it.


Butter is the queen of fats, especially when it comes from grass fed cows. Grass fed butter:

  • Is a rich source of vitamins A, D, K2, and E, needed for the development of body and brain, as well as selenium, copper, zinc and chromium.
  • Butter provides iodine-critical for thyroid function
  • It is rich in cholesterol and contains lecithin needed for the proper utilization of cholesterol
  • Contains DHA, vital for brain development and function.
  • Raw butter contains an antistiffness compound called the Wulzen factor, which is destroyed by heat.
  • Most importantly it provides arachidonic acid, AA, an underappreciated type of fat essential for healthy skin, intestinal integrity and brain function.

AA promotes sustained, goal-oriented behavior by supporting dopamine production in the central nervous system, prevention of exito-toxicity and epilepsy, formation of cell to cell junctions essential to skin and intestinal health, support of the immune response and resolution of inflammation. It is essential to fertility and to blood clotting. Principal sign of AA deficiency is dry, scaly skin. The water evaporates due to lack of cell to cell junctions.

Not hard to get 4 tablespoons of butter into your daily diet. For those with low tolerance to dairy protein, use ghee (which is butter with the milk proteins removed) instead of butter.

Make sure you are getting grass fed butter from clean pastures and meat…or buy organic. Conventional butter has been shown to have high levels of PCB’s according to some studies.

Whole Raw Milk

Sally Fallon says their recommendation to consume raw milk during pregnancy runs completely counter to U.S. Government recommendations. According to the Food and Drug Administration, “drinking raw milk is like playing Russian roulette with your health,” and is especially dangerous for pregnant women.” Really? What they don’t tell you is the dangers of raw milk are greatly exaggerated and reports association raw milk with illness are highly biased. Any food not handled properly can cause illness, including pasteurized milk. Raw milk is unique among food we consume in that it contains numerous factors that actually kill pathogens while strengthening the immune system.

Raw whole milk from pasture fed cows provides:

  • A complete source of nutrition that is easy to digest and assimilate
  • Is vastly superior to pasteurized for building strong bones and teeth
  • For protecting against infection, allergies, and asthma and for building immunity
  • Many consumers who are unable to drink pasteurized milk can consume raw milk without difficulty. However, check your food allergies if you suspect that the milk is not agreeing with you.

Grass fed raw milk as opposed to grain fed raw milk is:

  • much higher in fat-soluble vitamins, pigments, conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and omega 3 fats.

As the quality of grass increases , the content of other grass-related nutrients-such as pigments, vitamin E and CLA- also increase in the milk. Important to get used to the milk, before becoming pregnant. Some support slight constipation or runny stools on first consuming raw milk. Most important to obtain your milk from a clean source as I stated above.

For additional benefits, raw milk can be cultured to make buttermilk, kefir or yogurt. Fermented milk products are even easier to digest than sweet milk, and they provide beneficial bacteria for the digestive tract.

If you can’t consume raw milk, you can raw cheese, which is legal and available in all states and you can order through the internet.

Goal is to consume 1500 mg of calcium per day…5 cups of whole milk or seven to eight ounces of cheese.

THE Nourishing Traditions Book of Baby and Child Care Introduction

The appearance of published advice on raising children, starting in the 18th century signaled a profound change in western life, one in which the scientific counsel of experts replaced the wisdom of elders, and the instincts of parents and grandparents.


Early child rearing literature from Britain and England displays a distinctly moralistic tone. The writers – who tended to be physicians or ministers-linked child rearing practices with future behavior and character. Is this not our heart, first of all to raise godly children and grandchildren who love CHRIST with all of their heart, soul, mind and strength, and love others as their self? And then to raise healthy children, with even temperaments, who are able to focus, concentrate, work hard, play hard, and bear much fruit for CHRIST. We know that as Christians, that GOD works all things together for good, and some of you here, have children who have some challenges, just as I do. Yes, GOD can use these health challenges as Charles Spurgeon  said to bring great glory to HIMself, and I praise HIM that HE does. GOD also says, that my people perish for lack of knowledge. Hosea 4:6 Our children are perishing today because of the “lack of knowledge,” on the parts of parents who aren’t educated about today’s foods that are laden with GMO’s, pesticides,  lack of nutrition, vaccinations, toxins in our home, and yards, and where our children attend school and church, and even treatments such as antibiotics, steroids, and other pharmaceuticals  that can have long time health effects. We are truly living in a sea of chemicals and this study will help us navigate our path through these landmines of challenges to our health and our children.


This book really focuses on nutrition and outside influences that affect our children’s health…which indeed affects their behavior. When Johnny and I were younger we had the privilege of leading parenting classes by Gary and Anne Marie Ezzo, These classes, beginning at infancy helped train us as parents to train our children when to eat, sleep, wake…and this ultimately led to a more self disciplined child who was able to control their impulses instead of expecting to be catered to at their every whelm. They learned from the very beginning that they were a welcome member of the family. The universe didn’t revolve around them and that GOD was first and Mom and Dad were the priority relationship in their family, and the children were welcome members. These are excellent parenting resources and I can’t recommend them enough to train your children to love CHRIST, to love and respect their parents, and others, and how to have high morals and behavior grounded in the WORD of GOD.


The Nourishing Book of Baby and Child Care augments or compliments great biblical training. It is most important to make sure our children are being nurtured by great nutrition and the other recommendations in this book so they will be able to have self control, even tempers, be able to focus, and fulfill all the aspirations we have for them as parents and that GOD has for them when HE created them.


Sadly, we are living in a day and time where there are very real “time bombs,” that are compromising the health of our children. One of the first things we will study in this book is the importance of the prospective mom and Dad to make sure she is getting the proper nutrition,before they conceive. Dr. Sherry Rodgers, recommends Mom’s and Dad’s detoxing for a year before they conceive.

 We will be studying breastfeeding, and you can imagine if Mom is toxic, or malnourished, then that milk baby is getting is going to pass the chemicals right along to baby, or the milk won’t be as nutritious as it should be to help baby get a great start. Dr. Rogers shares in her book, Detoxify or Die, that babies now are born with over 2oo chemicals in their umbilical cords! That’s coming from us as parents….we will also consider different baby formula’s, and what we have to be careful about with those…soy formulas contain phytoestrogens that are causing our children go through puberty at alarming earlier ages and femininizing our boys.


In the  book , The Nourishing Traditions Book of Baby and Child Care by Sally Fallon Morell and Thomas S. Cowan Md.  it talks about the bitter legacy of Dr. Spock and how he was the first child rearing “expert”to endorse processed food for babies, including processed ingredients for infant formula. He was also the first to talk against dietary fats for growing children. Dr. Spock was the first to cause us to fear animal fat in infant feeding. He specifically warned against raw milk, and suggested pouring off some of the cream. He said that “milk was easier to digest when it had no cream in it.” Dr. Spock introduced empty calories early as orange juice (fresh, frozen, or canned) or sugar water given in a bottle. The best weaning food for baby he recommended was cereal, which came before fruits, vegetables, egg yolk and meat.


Dr. Spock didn’t mention butter on veggies which are important to help baby absorb his minerals…he recommended babies transitioning to pasteurized milk at nine months. He even recommended evaporated milk!


Dr. Spock devoted a large part of his book to dealing with misbehavior in children-anger, jealousy, whining, tantrums and disobedience-which even the best “firm and friendly” parenting skills have difficulty solving in the malnourished child on a blood-sugar roller coaster….Nutrition and Behavior Video by Dr. Blaylock.


This book will be teaching us how important vitamins and minerals and fats and oils are not only for physical health, but for brain development, behavior and emotional development. We will be learning what makes up a healthy diet.


The Enduring Observations of Weston A. Price


In 1945 a dentist by the name of Weston A. Price published a book called Nutrition and Physical Degeneration. He was well known and well respected in his field. In Nutrition and Physical Degeneration, Price describes a series of unique investigations over the course of 10 years. Price was troubled as he looked into the mouths of his patients as most of his adults clients had rapid rampant decay and often accompanied by serious problems elsewhere in the body such as arthritis, osteoporosis, diabetes, intestinal complaints and fatigue.

He was even more concerned over the development of the teeth in his younger patients. Most often they were crowded and crooked and becoming more and more common, along with what Price called “facial deformities,” overbites, narrowed faces, underdevelopment of the nose, lack of well-defined cheekbones and pinched nostrils. These children suffered from complaints that sound like our kids today-frequent infections, allergies, anemia, asthma, poor vision, lack of coordination, fatigue, learning disorders and behavioral problems-and their lack of physical attractiveness made them unhappy.


Price didn’t believe that “physical degeneration” was mankind’s natural state. He believed we were intended to have physical perfection and children should grow up free of ailments.


Price traveled to various isolated parts of the world where the inhabitants had no contact with “civilization” to study their health and physical development. He traveled to isolated Swiss villages, a windswept island off the coast of Scotland. He studied traditional Eskimos, Indian tribes in Canada and the Florida Everglades, South Sea Islanders, Aborigines in Australia, Maoris in New Zealand, Peruvian and Amazonian Indians and tribesmen in Africa.


He took a camera with him and to make a permanent record of the people he studied. The pictures he took and observations he made are in Nutrition and Physical Degradation and you can order that from


Price found virtually every tribe or village he went the individual showed genuine physical perfection. Tooth decay was rare, and dental crowding and occlusions-the kind of problems that keep American orthodontists in yachts and vacation homes-nonexistent. He took photographs of beautiful smiles, and noted how cheerful and optimistic the natives were. The people were characterized by “splendid physical development” and an almost complete absence of disease, even those living in physical environments that were extremely harsh.



He described the children and babies as robust, healthy, alert, and curious. Primitive villages life was rarely interrupted by the sound of a child crying. The cheerful optimism of young and old impressed him. The parents didn’t need advice on dealing with anger, tantrums, whining and destructive conduct because these types of behaviors didn’t exist. When every individual was attractive, well formed and healthy, jealously was rarely an issue. Price concluded that what his contemporaries referred to as “defects in moral character” weren’t the result of poor parenting skills or bad genetics but poor nutrition. 


When Price visited tribes who had come in contact with traders or missionaries and abandoned their traditional diet for food available in newly established stores-sugar, refined grains, canned foods, condensed and pasteurized milk, devitalized fats and oils, he found rampant tooth decay, infections illness and degenerative conditions. Children born to parents who had adopted the so called civilized diet had crowded and crooked teeth, narrowed faces, deformities of bone structure and reduced immunity to disease.


Price found that the foods that allow people of every race and every climate to be healthy are nutrient-dense natural foods-meat with its fat and especially organ meats, whole unprocessed milk products from grass fed animals, fish, shellfish, insects, whole grains, tubers, vegetables and fruit-not newfangled concoctions made with white sugar, refined flour processed milk and rancid, chemically altered vegetable oils-not puddings, fruit juice, sugar water and condensed milk.


He found that the diets of healthy peoples contained at least four times more minerals and water soluble vitamins- Vit. C and B complex than the diet of modernized peoples. Price found that healthy native groups contained at least 10 times more vitamin A and vitamin D than the diet of modernized peoples! These vitamins are only found in animal fats-butter , lard, egg yolks, fish liver oils-and foods with fat-rich cellular membranes like liver and other organ meats, fish eggs and shell fish.


Price referred to the fat-soluble vitamins as “catalysts” or “activators” upon which the assimilation of all the other nutrients depend-proteins, minerals and vitamins. Without the dietary factors found in animal fats, all the other nutrients largely go to waste.


An even more powerful fat-soluble vitamin than vitamins A and D is what he called Activator X…the foods they considered so important for fertility and growth-fish liver oil, fish eggs, organ meats and the deep yellow spring and fall butter from cows eating rapidly growing green grass. He found the actions of “high-vitamin” spring and fall butter was nothing short of magical, especially when small doses of cod liver oil were part of the diet.

Now we know that “Activator X is vitamin K2, the animal form of K2.


Modern science has discovered that vitamin K:

  • activates cells to produce proteins after signaling by Vitamins A and D
  • plays an important role in reproduction
  • infant growth,
  • facial structure
  • mineral utilization,
  • bone density
  • protection from cavities
  • protection from fatigue
  • sports mental development and neurological health
  • protects from accumulation of plaque
  • supports energy production



Price cured a boy of seizures with a combination of cod liver oil and high-vitamin butter oil.



The brain contains one of highest concentrations of Vit. K where it’s involved in the myelin sheath of nerve cells, contributing to learning capacity; and vitamin K2 is involved in the synthesis of lipids called sulfatides in the brain, the absence of which induces seizures.


A specific sign of vitamin K, deficiency is a “sunken in” structure of cheeks and nose, the underdevelopment of the middle third of the face.



Modern Advice

Unfortunately the modern world has largely ignored or even ridiculed the findings of Dr. Weston Price. Formula feeding and canned baby food have become the foods of choice for infants, and lowfat diets for children are enshrined as national policy. Most infant books on feeding warn that Vit A is toxic, and D must be obtained through a supplement. Vit. K so necessary for growth, bone density and mental development is rarely mentioned.


Medical establishments wholesale acceptance of soy foods is serious and dangerous…putting the soy fed generation at risk for nutrient deficiencies, growth problems, digestive disorders, learning disorders, hormonal disturbances and infertility.



Another obsession with modern child rearing “experts” is germs and it’s counterproductive. We now know that beneficial bacteria in our gut supports good health in many ways: They help digest our food, prevent absorption of toxins and heavy metals like mercury, they keep the few species of harmful bacteria at bay, they support the immune system, produce vital nutrients and play a role in the production of feel good chemicals.


Creating the necessary conditions for the proliferation of beneficial bacteria in the intestinal tract and through good nutrition, should be a key goal for todays parents.


The practice of vaccination: Todays child receives over three dozen shots before entering school, starting with day one after birth. Vaccines carry a load of neurotoxins including mercury and aluminum, and interfere with the development of natural immunity. Modern baby books don’t prepare parents for the tragedy of serious disease; and when disease occurs, they insist that nothing can be done, the cause is “genes,” or germs against which we are helpless.


Modern parents tend to be anxious hesitant and distrustful of the natural world; clearing baby’s path with antibacterial wipes; slathering on sunscreen before dressing their children ( just in case they might be exposed to the sun) clamoring for strong drugs including antibiotics at the first sign of a sniffle, vaccination against every possible illness, trundling their youngsters off to lessons, sports and preschool. In short they focus on everything but what children need most from their parents: good nutrition provided in an atmosphere of freedom to develop, balanced with careful discipline and unconditional love.


Our modern tendency is to force intellectual learning on young children and structure their lives with classes, lessons, and team sports. This deprives children of the vital development that comes from unstructured, imaginative play, and can have serious consequences on the child’s emotional and intellectual development. The nourished child will learn to read, write, study and think when the time is appropriate, she mentions around age 7.  

My note….When i was homeschooling my kids, i was taught that young boys often are later learning to read, maybe even 10 or so.  My son actually started reading around 4….i wish i had known these things to help him nutritionally, but thank the LORD, HE got us off the broken path of antibiotics my son was on til he was over two…and he still suffered from allergies. Now i understand why.

It’s hard to believe three weeks has already gone by and it’s almost time to start our upcoming class, The Nourishing Traditions Book of Baby and Child Care, this coming Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at our house.

This book is packed with so much critical information from holistic doctors, nutritionists, and Sally Fallon Morell of the Weston A. Price Foundation, I don’t know if you realize it or not, but one in every 50 children now have some kind of mental or physical disorder according to the CDC. That figure is even higher in boys where it is like one in 39. So many of our children and our adults, including myself, are sick from lack of good nutrition, from pesticides, additives, GMO’s in our food and lack of healthy soil the food is grown in, from personal care products, household cleaning products, vaccinations, antibiotics, yard spray, heavy metals etc, and this book will help us to navigate through all these issues. Through my own journey to wellness, GOD has given me a passion to educate those coming behind me to help them avoid the struggles i have been through and continue to encounter.

I’m looking forward to sharing devotions from Elisabeth Elliot, She was and is an important spiritual mentor to me as a young CHRISTian woman, i am not so young anymore:) on every issue concerning being a godly woman. I don’t know what i would have done without her encouragement in the LORD through the difficult days i found myself in as a sick mom with a toddler and an infant. I continue to be inspired and encouraged by her each day in my daily devotions.

Earlier this week i was watching a video by Pastor Jack Graham of Prestonwood Baptist in Plano, Tx about the spiritual warfare against the family. It was entitled “Homeland Security,” Satan is attempting to destroy the family through various methods and if he can destroy us through our lack of knowledge of all the assaults on our health he is happy to do it. Our health affects our behavior. This video came on the heels of studying the new book we will be using in our upcoming class, “The Nourishing Traditions Book of Baby and Child Care.” In that book, i was reminded once again of how important nutrition is in determining our health, and the behavior that follows. Children and adults who struggle with ADHD, anger, anxiety, depression, and even psychotic behaviors can be allergic to certain foods, sensitive to the additives such as MSG, or susceptible to the GMO’s in today’s foods. They can also be reacting to chemicals in their environment, or have heavy metal poisoning from mercury and aluminum from vaccines, car exhaust, cigarette smoke, etc. Dr. Russell Blaylock in his video, Nutrition and Behavior,, explains so clearly how what we eat can affect our behavior. Those who commit the most violent crimes are often found to be hypoglycemic (low blood sugar). Once that is corrected, they often never commit another crime.

You can order the book we will be using in our study by Sally Fallon Morell of the Weston A. Price Foundation, and Thomas S. Cowan MD .Even if you can’t come to the class, i encourage you to get the book and read it and share it with your friends and family. It makes a great baby gift…before the mom is pregnant because it covers what Mom and Dad’s nutrition should be too before they get pregnant. Dr. Sherry Rogers, also recommends prospective Mom’s and Dad’s detoxing a year before they get pregnant.

I am closing with a letter i just read on the Age of Autism site by Jennifer Margulis, author of The Business of Baby. I hope you can take time to read all the sickness that is affecting us and you will join us as we learn together how to navigate through these minefields of health challenges to our health and our children.
I look forward to seeing you and please pray for me as i prepare for our classes. I’ve been trying to get rid of some heavy metals, and it has been a real challenge for me. II Cor. 12:9 “For My grace is sufficient for you for my power is made perfect in weakness, therefore i will gladly boast in my weaknesses that the power of CHRIST may rest upon me.”

“The doctor just dismissed my concerns”

a mom of three sons told me. “He said, ‘Mrs. G., nothing’s wrong with your son. He’s a boy. He’s just developing slower, he’ll be fine.’”

Mrs. G. knew her son wasn’t okay with every fiber in her being.

She looked at the doctor in surprise. I have two older sons, she told the doctor. I’m not a first-time mom. I have a degree in early childhood development and I’ve been a teacher my whole life. I’m not imagining things. Something’s wrong!

Her doctor walked out of the room without a backwards glance.

It wasn’t until almost a year later that a medical professional diagnosed Mrs. G.’s boy with the problem she already knew he had: autism. Since early intervention can be so helpful and her son is still so sick, she cries when she thinks about how much precious time has been lost.

“I’m broke. We spend every penny we have on interventions.”

“I called the pediatrician and he hung up the phone on me.”

“Our family has been betrayed so many times.”

“I just don’t know what to do.”

These are the voices from the trenches, the moms and dads of children who have broken brains and ailing bodies. I met dozens of them at the AutismOne 2013 Conference, which was held in Chicago, Illinois from May 23rd to May 26th this year.

“We can reverse this epidemic.”

“My child has recovered from autism. He’s no longer on the spectrum.”

“We are thinking moms and we won’t be silenced.”

“We’re in this together and we’re fighting this fight and we are going to win.”

These, too, are the voices from the trenches, the moms and dads of children who have broken brains and ailing bodies. For as many moms who burst into tears at this conference, there were twice as many (often the same ones) who burst into applause, told the best bad jokes, and knew how to have fun. Autism mamas know how to rock the house.

Some children who were diagnosed on the autism spectrum have recovered physically and mentally. When evaluated now they are found to no longer be autistic. What mainstream doctors, who maintain that children with autism cannot get better (and often tell parents to institutionalize their kids) say when they hear about this is that the original diagnosis—even if it was confirmed by four or five specialists—was simply wrong. They say children cannot recover from autism. Instead of seeking out these families, scrutinizing their medical records, and listening to their stories, they dismiss them.

But for every doctor who has kicked these parents out of their practices (for asking too many questions, for calling the office too often, for not vaccinating their already severely immunocompromised children), there are other doctors—many of whom presented their recent clinical findings at the conference—who are trying to fix the damage, listening to parents’ concerns, working tireless both to figure out the cause of what is clearly iatrogenic damage as well as to find solutions.

I don’t have a child with autism.

I don’t know what it’s like to have a child who has lost the feeling in his fingernails, who has constant and chronic diarrhea, who bangs his head against the wall, or who stims (self-stimulates) in other ways.

I don’t know what it’s like to have to clean feces off the walls. I don’t know what it’s like to have a child who cannot be left alone for one second of one day. I don’t know what it’s like to realize that I cannot ever die because I don’t know how anyone else can possibly take care of my kid. I don’t know what it’s like to be a single mom and have to institutionalize my teenager because he has become more than I can handle.

I also don’t know what causes autism.

But I do know that we are in the midst of an autism epidemic, and that America’s children are sicker than they’ve ever been.

In addition to autism, we are seeing rises in asthma, food allergies, Type 1 juvenile diabetes, childhood cancers, Crohn’s Disease, celiac disease and other disorders. The debilitating health problems are hitting my family: my cousin’s son has Crohn’s Disease. It’s hitting my friends: One good friend has a child with Type 1 juvenile diabetes, twenty others have children on the spectrum. It’s hitting my school: four children in my daughter’s third grade class had autism spectrum disorders. It’s hitting my neighborhood: two children at my son’s school have been diagnosed with cancer in the last three months.

I also know that we are vaccinating our children in America in a way that is literally unprecedented in human history, as my colleague Louise Kuo Habakus said during our panel entitled, “Stories, Science, and Social Change.”

I also know that we are vaccinating newborns against a sexually transmitted disease (Hepatitis B) found almost entirely in prostitutes and drug users in the absence of any medical indication without knowing what kind of long-term ill effects we may be creating by introducing a vaccine into a completely immature human immune system.

And that we are exposing unborn fetuses more often to more sound waves than ever before, without making sure that there are adequate safety checks in place on the ultrasound equipment, without ever having studied whether ultrasound exposure is safe, and without knowing what the implications of the fact that prolonged ultrasound exposure causes abnormal brain cell migration in rodents means for human brains.

I also know that there are now tens of thousands of parents who are telling the same story: their child was developing normally, making eye contact, saying words, babbling, engaging in pretend play, looking in the same direction when a parent looked at something. Then they took their baby in for yet another round of shots (these parents were all rule followers. They did exactly what their doctors told them to do on the schedule their doctors told them to follow) at 15 months or 18 months and the next day, or two days later, or five days later, or six days later, or nine days later, their baby was banging his head against the side of the crib, no longer speaking or making eye contact, having diaper blow-outs with yellow sulfurous diarrhea.

All of a sudden their baby was gone.

But when they asked their doctors if there could be a connection between the visit to the pediatrician’s office and their baby’s otherwise inexplicable illness, instead of saying, “I don’t know,” or “Let’s investigate that,” their doctors got angry and defensive and said adamantly and with absolute certainty, “No.”

The numbers of children with autism are staggering: At least one percent of the children in the U.S. between the ages of 3 and 17 have an autism spectrum disorder.

This is a nationwide health epidemic that deserves our highest priority.

Austism is my problem.

Autism is your problem.

We need to figure out what is causing autism and stop it. We need to help the children who have been severely damaged and who cannot function get better. For those who cannot recover, we need a viable plan for how to care for them and ensure they have a safe future.

This is not a burden families can shoulder alone. It’s too much to ask of anyone. Everyone in America is now affected by autism. This is our nation’s collective problem.

We need to start asking the right questions. We need to find the answers. And we need them right now.

It’s time to stop damaging our children’s brains.

SHINING is always costly. Light comes only at the cost of that which produces it. An unlit candle does no shining. Burning must come before shining. We can-not be of great use to others without cost to ourselves. Burning suggests suffering. We shrink from pain.

We are apt to feel that we are doing the greatest good in the world when we are strong, and able for active duty, and when the heart and hands are full of kindly service.

When we are called aside and can only suffer; when we are sick; when we are consumed with pain; when all our activities have been dropped, we feel that we are no longer of use, that we are not doing anything.

But, if we are patient and submissive, it is almost certain that we are a greater blessing to the world in our time of suffering and pain than we were in the days when we thought we were doing the most of our work. We are burning now, and shining because we are burning. — Evening Thoughts.

Ultrametabolism: Ch. 15 Toxins and Obesity: A Missing Link?

Our example in the book was a truck driver who had hepatitis C from a sexual encounter (a sad consequence of sin, my addition). He drank, smoked, his diet was typical of a hardworking middle class man: eggs and sausage, doughnuts, meat sandwiches, pepperoni pizza, steak and wine, bread, potatoes, and pasta, veggies, occasionally.
Before Dr. Hyman saw him, he had stopped smoking and drinking a year before, and his liver function and fatigued had gotten much worse. He was very stressed from losing his wife and his job, was on injections of interferon, latest medical treatment for hepatitis, but his white blood cell count was still high. His blood pressure, blood sugar, and triglycerides were on the rise.
He went to one of Dr. Hyman’s workshops called “Detox for Life,” (, and was ready for a change. He was worried, his liver was scarring, things were starting to fail, and he was gaining weight around the middle. He had inflammation in his liver from the chronic hepatitis infection, and he also had a fatty liver from all the refined carbs and junk food he consumed.

Joe was toxic, years of smoking, drinking, and poor eating had poisoned his body, especially his liver. After five days on the detox program, eating a simple diet of vegetables, rice, beans, a detoxifying rice protein shake, a few herbs for the liver, and fiber to clean out the gut, along with saunas, and rest, he felt much better than he had in years.

Dr. Hyman advised him to change his diet to control his insulin and blood sugar, and recommended that he introduce some special foods such as broccoli, garlic, dandelion greens and artichokes, to boost his detoxification system and protect his liver. Dr. Hyman added some N-acetylcysteine (NAC) , alpha-lipoic acid, and selenium, and milk thistle to further support his fatty liver.

After three months, he felt better, his weight had dropped by more than 20 pds, and his viral counts were lower than they had been in years. Even with a compromised liver, healing can occur.

I kind of feel like this guy’s story is similar to mine….i never had hep. C, but I sure was exposed to secondhand smoke growing up, along with pesticides sprayed on cotton fields, numerous antibiotics, a powerful anti inflammatory drug in my adulthood to control fibromyalgia pain (now I know from toxins), chlorine from working inside as a lifeguard, etc. Several years ago, when I was barely able to walk because of toxins and allergic reactions, I had a liver test that showed my liver enzymes were elevated…that was the ONLY test on conventional tests that indicated anything was wrong with me.

Although I have done many detox methods through the years, and about killed myself quiet honestly before i was under a doctor’s supervision, it was only last fall that I did an intensive liver detox under my doctor’s supervision. It wasn’t easy, and though I struggled, I improved and was able to progress to the heavy metal detox. The same herbs and supplements Dr. Hyman recommends were those my doc recommends. I am very thankful my body tolerated the supplements for the detox. Dr. Soto is very careful about detoxing period before the gut is healed, so I don’t recommend going out and buying these supplements to detox your liver before you make sure your gut is in a good place. Otherwise it can make you very, very sick, and that has happened to me too, a couple of years ago, when I tried to detox intensively without making the right preparations to my gut beforehand…let’s just say, I crashed and burned, and it was very, very uncomfortable.  I did years ago too, trying to detox on my on.

This topic is near and dear to my heart because this is where I am walking…as I have sought the keys to my complete healing for the past several years, I definitely feel this is a “biggie.” First you have to heal the gut, then the liver. I have gradually gained 40-50 pds even though I have been doing a sauna detox since 1999. I knew there was something that wasn’t right, because I have been eating healthy foods for a long time and was still unable to lose weight.

Environmental Toxins Cause Weight Gain
Toxins within our bodies and from our environment both contribute to obesity. Getting rid of toxins and boosting our natural detox system are essential components of long-term weight loss and a healthy metabolism.

How Well is Your Detox System Working?
Are you constipated
Do you urinate small amounts of dark, strong-smelling urine only a few times a day?
Do you rarely break into a real sweat?
Do you have one or more of the following symptoms: fatigue, muscle aches, headaches, concentration, or memory problems?
Do you have fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome?
Do you drink tap or well water?
Do you have your clothes dry cleaned?
Do you work or live in a “tight” building with poor ventilation or windows that don’t open?
Do you live in a large urban or industrial area?
Do you use household or lawn and garden chemicals or have your house or apartment treated for bugs by an exterminator?
Do you have more than one or two mercury amalgams (“silver” fillings)?

I am definitely not endorsing drinking…just sharing what might be a helpful symptom from Dr. Hyman to help you see if your liver is toxic
When you drink coffee or other substances containing caffeine, do you feel wired, have increased aches in muscles and joints, or have hypoglycemic symptoms (anxiety, palpitations, sweating, and dizziness)?
Do you regularly consume any of the following substances or medications: acetaminophen (Tylenol), acid-blocking drugs (Tagamet, Zantac, Pepcid, Prilosec, Prevacid), hormone modulating medications in pills, patches or creams (the birth control pill, estrogen, progesterone, prostate medication), ibuprofen or naproxen, medications for colitis or Crohn’s disease, medications for recurrent headaches, allergy symptoms, nausea, diarrhea, or indigestion?
Have you had jaundice (turned yellow), or have you been told you have Gilbert’s syndrome( an elevation of a liver test for bilirubin)?
Do you have a history of any of the following conditions: breast cancer, smoking-induced lung cancer or other type of cancer, prostate problems, food allergies, sensitivities, or intolerances.

Living in a Sea of Toxins: The Problem

Since the turn of the twentieth century, 80,000 new chemicals have been introduced and most have never been tested for safety. Every single person and animal on the planet contains residues of toxic chemicals or metals in its tissues. Chemical toxins move quickly from your blood into storage sites-mostly fat tissue, organs, and bones-so blood or urine levels severely underestimate our total toxic load.

A study based in Michigan found DDT in 70 percent of 4 year olds, even though DDT has been outlawed since 1972. Where were these children exposed to DDT? Probably through their mother’s breast milk (a good reason, Mother’s to detox at least a year before your try to get pregnant is what Dr. Sherry Rogers recommends Dr. Rogers says that in a babies umbilical cord at birth, are found over 200 chemicals!…Another great reason to detox a year before getting pregnant). How did the Mom’s get the DDT?

Many of the countries around the world we buy our produce from uses DDT on their products. Many of these chemicals are stored in fat tissue, making animal products concentrated sources. One hundred percent of beef is contaminated with DDT, as are 93 percent of processed cheese, hot dogs, bologna, turkey, and ice cream, because the soil still contains residues of the pesticide long ago banned. Our house sits where there used to be strawberry fields…I’ve often wondered about the chemicals in our soil.


We are all stewing in this toxic soup and it is playing a major role in the current obesity epidemic and all the other health challenges in this country.

What Are Toxins and Where Do They Come From?


Toxins are poisons that contaminate our bodies in one way or the other. They can come from our normal bodily functions…those we eliminate through our kidneys-urine, and liver and stool-our bile.
When our liver or kidneys fail, we don’t cope well with these toxins. In that last 100 years we have been burdened with an unprecedented number of toxins, and the total load of all toxins-pesticides, industrial chemicals, mercury, and more has exceeded our bodies’ ability to get rid of the, leading to illness. It also leads to metabolic problems that promote weight gain and prevents weight loss.

Where do these toxins come from?
1) Environmental -(external toxins)
2) Our own gut (internal toxins). The by products of our metabolism (internal toxins) need to be processed.
All of them put stress on our liver.

External Toxins include chemical toxins and heavy metals. The heavy metals that cause the most ill health are lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic, nickel, and aluminum. The chemical culprits include toxic chemicals and volatile organic compounds, (VOC’s), solvents (cleaning materials, formaldehyde, toluene, benzene), drugs, alcohol, pesticides, herbicides, and food additives. Certain medications,Dr. Sherry Rogers would say all meds , have toxic effects,. Our liver has to process them and they deplete the body of glutathione which takes the chemicals out of us, along with other nutrients. Medications can cause weight gain, (along with many other effects), and be considered external toxins. Psychotropic meds, in particular MAO inhibitors, lithium, valproate, Remeron, Clozaril, zyprexa, and some selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as Prozac, Zoloft, and Paxil, have all been shown to promote weight gain through various mechanisms, according to Dr. Hyman. (My note-this book focuses on weight gain, but some of these drugs can cause suicidal thoughts, violent behavior, and other bad effects. You are so blessed to find a doctor who will help you get to the root of the problem instead of treating the symptoms with a drug that can cause more problems.)


Drugs can affect our weight, along with other foreign chemicals, such as plastics that are endocrine disruptors. Dr. Rogers contributes a lot of the weight gain in Americans is due to plastics, the number one toxin in our body. Dr. Hyman addresses this as he says these hormone disruptors such as plastics, “interfere with our normal hormone balance, including sex hormones, which may lead to early puberty in girls and increase in hormonal disorders affecting many of the major weight control hormones beside the thyroid including estrogen, testosterone, cortisol, insulin, growth hormone and leptin.
Don’t drink water out of plastic, buy food as much as possible, without plastic. It’s really crazy…even good organic food is packaged in plastic, along with grass feed beef, etc. If you can find a place that still uses paper to package meat, that might be a better option, but that has it’s own set of chemicals, bleach, dioxins, etc.

Internal toxins include microbial compounds (from bacteria, yeast, or other organisms) and the by-products of normal protein metabolism (such as urea and ammonia). Bacteria and yeast in the gut also produce waste products, metabolic products, and cellular debris that can interfere with many body functions. These toxic elements can lead to increased inflammation and oxidative stress (rust). These bacteria produce endotoxins , toxic amines, toxic derivatives of bile, and various carcinogenic substances, such as putrescine and cadaverine (you can imagine why they have such names.

All these toxins affect your ability to lose weight….not to mention a world of other health challenges. Our total toxic load can frustrate attempts at weight loss by impairing two key metabolic organs-the liver and the thyroid-and by damaging our energy-burning factories-the mitochondria.


Toxins interfere with many aspects of metabolism, including reducing thyroid hormone levels and increasing excretion of thyroid hormones by the liver. Toxins also compete with thyroid hormones by blocking the thyroid receptors and by vying for thyroid transport proteins, so the thyroid hormones have no way of getting to their site of action in the first place (like stealing your car).

Bottom line: pesticides and other industrial toxins PCB’s -(by the way, butter has the largest amount of PCB’s according to some info Dr. Soto shared at the “Detoxify or Die,” seminar last week. Hopefully, grass fed butter doesn’t have as much) lower thyroid hormone levels, interfere with their function, and consequently slow metabolic functioning.
You don’t want to lose a lot of weight without detoxing properly. Otherwise the pesticides and chemicals stored in the fat can go to your thyroid and liver and slow your metabolism and cause other problems. In one study Dr. Hyman quotes, the increase of toxins during weight loss in men inhibited normal mitochondrial function and reduced their ability to burn calories, retarding further weight loss, suggestion that toxins affect thyroid levels, damage mitochondria and reduce the ability to burn fat and calories. All of these actions cause both weight gain and resistance to weight loss.

So toxins
directly lower thyroid hormone levels
break down your mitochondria
disturb your metabolic rate
inhibit fat burning
damage the mechanisms by which hormonal signals control your appetite and eating behavior. Leptin is the hormone that tells your brain you are full. Toxins (heavy metals such as mercury or chemical toxins) block these signals.

Fatty Liver -The Cause or Effect of Weight Gain?

Too many toxins in your body cause: fatty liver. The more problems you have with your liver, the harder it is to process toxins. Fatty liver is the most common liver disease in America, affecting 20 percent of the population. It is caused by the most abundant toxin in our diet : sugar. Increases in sugar or refined carbs increases insulin and insulin resistance, which leads to an accumulation of fat in your liver cells. Increased fat in your liver cells is produced by eating too much sugar, refined carbs and high fructose corn syrup, which causes insulin resistance. Dr. Hyman says some of his patients have developed cirrhosis of the liver from sugar alone!

A fatty liver produces more inflammatory molecules and free radicals and leads to even more mitochondrial damage. Full of fat and inflammation, the liver can no longer protect you from the damaging effects of other environmental toxins which leads to even further damage.

Your Ability to Detoxify: How Your Genes Control Your Detox System

The effect of toxins on anyone is determined in part by the genetics of that person’s detox system. Some people can mobilize and eliminate toxins well; others have more difficulty…that would be me (my note). Getting rid of heavy metals is important. It depends on specific proteins and enzymes that bind to the metals and transport them out of the cells. Even if you are genetically predisposed to problems with detoxification, there are things you can do to cleanse your body of these terrible materials and limit their effects on us. So glad to know these things, and so thankful for my doctors teaching me these things to help me.

Priming Your Detoxification System: Keeping Yourself Clean and Thin

Block your metabolism
Interfere with your weight control mechanisms
Disrupt your hormones
Damage your mitochondria (energy pack of your cells)
Increase inflammation and oxidative stress
Lower Your Thyroid Hormones
Negatively affect your circadian rhythms of eating
Affect Your Autonomic Nervous System

Yes, I have had all the above and more…and we are continuing to work to reverse this…I’m presently undergoing a heavy metal detox under the supervision of my doctors, and continuing to take supplements to detox my liver, replace nutrients, etc.

This is part of the GOOD News: By making some simple lifestyle choices, we can all reduce our exposure to toxins and dramatically increase our ability to mobilize and get rid of stored toxins. In his book, Ultraprevention, and The Detox Book, Dr. Hyman review this system in more detail.

EVEN if you are genetically predisposed to have problems with detoxification, you can improve your detoxification system by the following recommendations.

Step 1 Minimize your exposure to toxins.
Avoid toxins as much as you can. While toxins are everywhere, you can cut down your exposure. The two most important are eating organic food as much as possible, and drinking clean filtered water.

Eat organic food. Eat food and animal products raised without the use of petrochemical pesticides, herbicides, hormones, and antibiotics. Farmers markets (Greene St. at the Nativity opens this Thursday!) Beyond Organics,, Publix, raise your own garden and meats…some of the many choices we have for organic food. Goosepond Farms and Dixon Family Meats raise Grassfeed Beef, Goosepond Farms has chickens, lamb, pork and turkey’s, and the pastures are treated by natural fertilizers to make the soil and grasses rich and healthy.
Drink filtered Water-reverse osmosis and carbon filters are the best systems for detoxifying your water.

Use air filters- My doctor, Katherine Henry in Richardson, Tx sold us two that I really like…it knocks out smells quickly, is small and doesn’t take up much room,you can travel easily with it, and it’s quiet. It’s called the GT 3000 by Green Tec and she had the best prices when we bought ours. You can purchase those from her by calling 1972-234-4777. Another friend sells the Austin Air filters recommended by Dr. William Rea, at the Environmental Health Clinic and I like those too. They are a little bulkier, but they do a great job also. You can contact Alison Walton at 1-405-562-0635 for more information about those.Hepa/ULPA filters and ionizers can be helpful in reducing dust, molds, volatile organic compounds, and others sources of indoor air pollution. I turn my up on days the neighbors are spraying their lawns with chemicals, cause those pesticides come into our homes and poison us, see “Poison in the Grass,” .

Clean and monitor your heating systems-eliminate the release of carbon monoxide, the most common cause of death by poisoning in America

Keep Houseplants-They help filter the air.

Air out your dry cleaning -(me, I don’t recommend it) but if you do, air it out after you bring it home, before wearing it.
Avoid excess exposure to environmental petrochemicals-including garden chemicals, dry cleaning fumes, car exhaust, chap stick, mineral oil, and secondhand smoke, which contains a ton of chemicals and heavy metals (my addition) Does tobacco smoke contain harmful chemicals?
Yes. Tobacco smoke contains chemicals that are harmful to both smokers and nonsmokers. Breathing even a little tobacco smoke can be harmful (1–3).
Of the more than 7,000 chemicals in tobacco smoke, at least 250 are known to be harmful, including hydrogen cyanide, carbon monoxide, and ammonia (1, 4).
Among the 250 known harmful chemicals in tobacco smoke, at least 69 can cause cancer. These cancer-causing chemicals include the following (1, 4):
Beryllium (a toxic metal)
1,3–Butadiene (a hazardous gas)
Cadmium (a toxic metal)
Chromium (a metallic element)
Ethylene oxide
Nickel (a metallic element)
Polonium-210 (a radioactive chemical element)
Vinyl chloride
Other toxic chemicals in tobacco smoke are suspected to cause cancer, including the following (3):
Reduce or eliminate the use of toxic household and personal care products. Underarm deodorant, antacids, and pots and pans containing aluminum are good examples. See for dangers that lurk in common household cleaners, and personal care products. See also, for common household exposures.

Remove allergens and dust.
Minimize electromagnetic radiation -from radios, TV’s, microwaves, wifi…Dr. Soto keeps talking about how dangerous wifi is for us. Dr. Henry warned me about the radiation from our computers.

Reduce ionizing radiation-don’t overdo sun exposure or medical tests such as x rays.
Reduce exposure to heavy metals-cigarette smoke, predatory fish (tuna, swordfish, shark, tile fish, sea bass) river fish, water, lead paint, vaccines, “silver” fillings, the air we breathe. Check out Dr. David Jernigan’s FB page…about heavy metals. Very informative info about how to detox heavy metals and where they come from… Dr. Rodney Soto in our area is very careful to make sure your gut is healed and liver is detoxed before starting heavy metal detox… Don’t try to detox heavy metals without a doctor’s supervision…you can get into real trouble. Been there, done that, got the T shirt and it was painful:)…for several months.

Avoid cooking with Teflon-coated pans
Have one to two bowel movements a day.
Drink six to eight glasses of water a day.
Exercise regularly. Lymphatic massage can improve lymph massage can improve lymph flow and help flush toxins out of your tissues into your circulation so they can be detoxified.

Step 2: Sweat it Out and Sweat It Off:

When I first went to the Environmental Health Clinic in Dallas, several years ago, I (mitzi) was introduced to using the sauna to remove toxins from our bodies. That is a big part of Dr. Rea’s protocol for bringing healing to his patients. Sauna therapy is amazing but you have to be careful as it releases toxins in your blood stream and you can become overloaded, and you have to replace the nutrients you are sweating out…please do these things only under a doctor’s supervision, who is trained in working with detox.

Eating all the right foods, taking the right supplements and minimizing your exposure to toxins are all good ideas, but how can you prevent stored fat toxins from harming you as you lose weight? Take a sauna. It helps to balance the autonomic nervous system, reduce stress, lowers your blood sugar level, helps you burn calories, helps to excrete pesticides and heavy metals through your skin.

Dr. Rea, used the sauna to detoxify all kinds of chemicals and heavy metals in all of his patients, except those who were too sick to use the sauna…they had to get stronger before they could tolerate the toxic effects of the chemicals coming out of the fat, into the bloodstream, and excreted through the kidneys and bowels. Dr. Hyman refers to workers involved in Ground Zero after 9/11 detoxing in sauna’s…some of those were Dr. Rea’s and Dr. Henry’s patients out in Dallas. Dr. Sherry Rogers, “Detoxify or Die,” http://www.prestige and Dr. Jernigan below, recommend the same type of sauna, and most Dr.’s now days recommend the far infrared sauna’s over the conventional one.

Weight loss is inhibited when you have high levels of toxins, in part because toxins block thyroid function. When you get rid of these, you keep your metabolism going faster. Sauna therapy helps you release the toxins through your skin as you sweat and you stop storing toxins that cause your metabolism to slow down.
Below I have included an article about heavy metal detox and sauna therapy that my friend Kara posted. I met her at EHCD and she was very, very sick. She is now a patient of Dr. David Jernigan, and works for him, and is doing amazingly well! She shared some of Dr. Jernigan’s post recently on FB about heavy metals and how they affect our health. Heavy metal detox is best started with the help of your doctor of natural medicine who is trained in the many nuances of the problem. Once the majority of metals have been removed, there are numerous nutraceuticals on the market that are excellent for ongoing general heavy metal detox.

General guidelines for Heavy Metal Detoxification:
• First identify and eliminate various the sources of heavy metal toxicity, such as we discussed in previous Health Tips. Have your doctor determine the primary heavy metal toxins in your body, either through Bio-Resonance Scanning, Applied or Clinical Kinesiology, or through various laboratory tests.
• Following all of the guidelines for raising low body temperature is a prerequisite to any successful heavy metal detoxification plan.
• Various nutritional supplements, herbal formulas, and metal chelation products have been tested and reported in peer-reviewed journals and found to greatly reduce the body’s load of heavy metals. Always consult with your healthcare professional due to the fact that simply “stirring up” the toxins may just relocate the metals in a more sensitive area of the body causing a more severe malady, and should be therefore not attempted as a home treatment.
• Before any type of detoxification treatment is started or any silver (mercury) amalgams are removed, one must make certain that the lymphatic system is open and able to efficiently clear out the toxins that these treatments will be stirring up inside your body. The best way to address the lymphatic system is the ST8 Lymphatic drainage therapy. It is important to continue ST8 treatments throughout any detoxification program so that the organs of elimination can function without becoming overloaded. Research has shown that chelation therapy, a intravenous method of releasing heavy metals from the body, can be damaging to the kidneys due to the overtaxing of the kidney’s ability to clear out all the metal into the urine.
• Far Infrared Sauna therapy is one of the best ways to release not only heavy metals from deep within the tissues, but also to release all lipotrophic toxins (toxins stored in the fat cells). Far infrared saunas are not to be confused with regular steam saunas which many people cannot tolerate and may aggravate some illnesses. Far infrared saunas do not involve excessive temperatures and the infrared penetrates up to four and a half inches into the body to release deeply embedded toxins and bring them through the skin in sweat to be wiped off with a towel. I recommend the High Tech Health IR saunas. I have written many Health Tips on the benefits of these particular saunas. (
• Eliminate the causes of Candida/yeast overgrowth and help the body reduce the overgrowth of yeast, mold/fungus that are bound to heavy metals. Once these begin to die off one must be certain to mop up the heavy metals that are now released in the die off debris.
• Research supports the use of homeopathic metals to induce the release of metals from the body. Usually a low potency homeopathic (6x-12x) is best to cause a release of metals from the body. With this form of detoxification, if the goal is to remove mercury from the body, your healthcare professional would use homeopathic mercury in a 6-12x potency. If the desire was to remove aluminum then a 6-12x potency of homeopathic aluminum would be used, and so on.
• Ion-Cleanse Hydrotherapy can be beneficial. (
• Drinking distilled water during a metal detoxification program can help remove metals, due to the fact that distilled water is de-mineralized water. This makes it a good chelator of metals as the distilled water can chelate (pull or attract) metals from the tissues so then the body can excrete them via the urine. (General recommendation is up to 3 quarts per day during detox program only) Distilled water should only be drunk during the heavy metal detox program due to the fact that it may ultimately pull beneficial minerals out of the body when used long term.

Step 3: Eat Foods that help you Detoxify:

Dr. Henry first taught me about these special foods after she did a detox gene test on me that showed I have difficult detoxing chemicals. Food plays a major role in priming your system to excrete toxins. Adequate protein is required to supply the amino acids used by the liver to provide the building blocks for the powerhouse of our detoxification system, glutathione. Glutathione is the most critical antioxidant and detoxifier made by the body-and one that is easily depleted in the face of chronic exposure to toxins. If you don’t eat enough Protein , you want be able to produce enough of this important detoxifier.

Phytonutrients are another example of important foods that help you detox. The special molecules found in plant foods boost your detoxification pathways:
Cruciferous vegetables, (broccoli, kale, collards, Brussel sprouts, cauliflower, bok choy, Chinese cabbage, Chine broccoli)
Green tea
Dandelion Greens
Citrus peels
Cocoa…i (mitzi) get the organic cacao powder and make hot chocolate with it! Yummy…i just use water and stevia to sweeten it.

Let food be your medicine and medicine be your food

Step 4: Herbal Remedies to Improve Detoxification

Milk Thistle
Green Tea- drink or as a supplement. Dr. Hyman recommends drinking daily

Step 5: Add Supplements to Support Your Liver and Help You Detoxifying

Extra buffered vitamin C with mineral ascorbates…Vitamin C needs increased in state of toxicity, helps chelate heavy metals, boosts immune system

N-acetylcysteine (NAC) important amino acid derivative helps to boos glutathione and protect the liver from everyday toxic stresses.

Amino acids such as taurine and glycine these are some of the key molecules the liver uses to help detoxify.

Alpha Lipoic Acid-universal antioxidant

Bioflavonoids (citrus, pine bark, grape seed, green tea)
These add color to plants and include: Quercitin, pycnogenol or grape seed extract, Rutin

Probiotics such as Lactobacillus and Bifodobacter help normalize gut flor and reduce endotoxins-toxins produced by imbalances in the gut bacteria.

Step 6: Testing Your Detoxification System and Looking for Toxins-pesticides

Dr. Henry always starts with testing and I appreciate that very much. Get my genes tested really helped me to understand why I have a lot of the problems that I do with chemicals. Gradual weight gain has only been one of my symptoms, I have had a plethora of other troubles along the way. As I get older the weight gain has become more of a concern…but these principles for detoxing take care of all kinds of symptoms…

According to Dr. Hyman, mercury is one of the most important toxins to look for if you are chronically ill. Here are some of the tests you should consider with an experienced physician:

Genetic testing of detox pathways
Measurement of Detox enzymes-gluthione peroxidase
Heavy Metals-
1) Hair analysis, which identifies mercury mostly from fish consumption, not dental fillings
2) Chelation challenge with DMPS or DMSA that help bind to the metals in your body and help you excrete them in the urine where they can be measured
3) RBC or whole blood levels of metals, this usually indicates a recent exposure.

Toxins are a universal problem in the world we live in. They are something we need to be concerned about for ourselves and families for our health and weight loss.

Toxins inhibit the function of our thyroid and mitochondria as well as throwing our hormones out of balance, all of which wreak havoc on our metabolism.

Some people are genetically predisposed to detoxify more easily than others. The good news is even if you have genetic problems with detoxification, you can do some simple things that will make detoxification easier.
