This is going to be a little different from the previous weeks, but more like my posts of old when i was in the trenches of trying to feel better each day because to be honest, i have been taken back somewhat to those days that i struggled so.  I got sprayed by the mosquito truck a couple of weeks ago walking my dog, and I’ve been taken back down memory lane as I’m continuing to recover.  Has not been a comfortable time, but it’s been a time the LORD has reminded me of my roots, That I can’t even walk with GOD holding my hand.

My friend, gospel singer Tony Greene, went to be with JESUS five years ago this week.  GOD has taken down memory lane listening to some of the songs the Greenes sang that ministered so much to me during a difficult time of suffering in my life and continues to minister to me now. One song in particular was called, “I Can’t Even Walk Without You Holding My Hand.”  I remember the first time i heard Tony share the story how GOD gave the songwriter that song.  It was during a very difficult trial he and his wife were going through. Like most things that really matter in our lives, they come through a time of difficult suffering, and that is when we hear GOD the most.  I love the quote from C.S. Lewis that says, “GOD shouts to us in our pain, and whispers in our joy.” I can relate to that.  I always know I’m in a trial when i hear the LORD’s voice through HIS WORD, and people and other means so much louder. So this week, i wanted to share with you that beautiful song that Tony Greene sang that night at Truth Baptist Church that first penetrated my soul and led me to go to the altar, one of many times, i went to the altar when i went to hear the Greene’s sing. The recording is not at Truth Baptist, but somewhere else Tony sang,it  and I wanted you to get to hear the whole story and song.  I pray that it ministers to your heart as it does mine.

Ultrametabolism: Ch. 15 Toxins and Obesity: A Missing Link?

Our example in the book was a truck driver who had hepatitis C from a sexual encounter (a sad consequence of sin, my addition). He drank, smoked, his diet was typical of a hardworking middle class man: eggs and sausage, doughnuts, meat sandwiches, pepperoni pizza, steak and wine, bread, potatoes, and pasta, veggies, occasionally.
Before Dr. Hyman saw him, he had stopped smoking and drinking a year before, and his liver function and fatigued had gotten much worse. He was very stressed from losing his wife and his job, was on injections of interferon, latest medical treatment for hepatitis, but his white blood cell count was still high. His blood pressure, blood sugar, and triglycerides were on the rise.
He went to one of Dr. Hyman’s workshops called “Detox for Life,” (www.ultrametabolism.com/detox), and was ready for a change. He was worried, his liver was scarring, things were starting to fail, and he was gaining weight around the middle. He had inflammation in his liver from the chronic hepatitis infection, and he also had a fatty liver from all the refined carbs and junk food he consumed.

Joe was toxic, years of smoking, drinking, and poor eating had poisoned his body, especially his liver. After five days on the detox program, eating a simple diet of vegetables, rice, beans, a detoxifying rice protein shake, a few herbs for the liver, and fiber to clean out the gut, along with saunas, and rest, he felt much better than he had in years.

Dr. Hyman advised him to change his diet to control his insulin and blood sugar, and recommended that he introduce some special foods such as broccoli, garlic, dandelion greens and artichokes, to boost his detoxification system and protect his liver. Dr. Hyman added some N-acetylcysteine (NAC) , alpha-lipoic acid, and selenium, and milk thistle to further support his fatty liver.

After three months, he felt better, his weight had dropped by more than 20 pds, and his viral counts were lower than they had been in years. Even with a compromised liver, healing can occur.

I kind of feel like this guy’s story is similar to mine….i never had hep. C, but I sure was exposed to secondhand smoke growing up, along with pesticides sprayed on cotton fields, numerous antibiotics, a powerful anti inflammatory drug in my adulthood to control fibromyalgia pain (now I know from toxins), chlorine from working inside as a lifeguard, etc. Several years ago, when I was barely able to walk because of toxins and allergic reactions, I had a liver test that showed my liver enzymes were elevated…that was the ONLY test on conventional tests that indicated anything was wrong with me.

Although I have done many detox methods through the years, and about killed myself quiet honestly before i was under a doctor’s supervision, it was only last fall that I did an intensive liver detox under my doctor’s supervision. It wasn’t easy, and though I struggled, I improved and was able to progress to the heavy metal detox. The same herbs and supplements Dr. Hyman recommends were those my doc recommends. I am very thankful my body tolerated the supplements for the detox. Dr. Soto is very careful about detoxing period before the gut is healed, so I don’t recommend going out and buying these supplements to detox your liver before you make sure your gut is in a good place. Otherwise it can make you very, very sick, and that has happened to me too, a couple of years ago, when I tried to detox intensively without making the right preparations to my gut beforehand…let’s just say, I crashed and burned, and it was very, very uncomfortable.  I did years ago too, trying to detox on my on.

This topic is near and dear to my heart because this is where I am walking…as I have sought the keys to my complete healing for the past several years, I definitely feel this is a “biggie.” First you have to heal the gut, then the liver. I have gradually gained 40-50 pds even though I have been doing a sauna detox since 1999. I knew there was something that wasn’t right, because I have been eating healthy foods for a long time and was still unable to lose weight.

Environmental Toxins Cause Weight Gain
Toxins within our bodies and from our environment both contribute to obesity. Getting rid of toxins and boosting our natural detox system are essential components of long-term weight loss and a healthy metabolism.

How Well is Your Detox System Working?
Are you constipated
Do you urinate small amounts of dark, strong-smelling urine only a few times a day?
Do you rarely break into a real sweat?
Do you have one or more of the following symptoms: fatigue, muscle aches, headaches, concentration, or memory problems?
Do you have fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome?
Do you drink tap or well water?
Do you have your clothes dry cleaned?
Do you work or live in a “tight” building with poor ventilation or windows that don’t open?
Do you live in a large urban or industrial area?
Do you use household or lawn and garden chemicals or have your house or apartment treated for bugs by an exterminator?
Do you have more than one or two mercury amalgams (“silver” fillings)?

Do you eat large fish (swordfish, tuna, shark, tile fish ) more than once a week?

I am definitely not endorsing drinking…just sharing what might be a helpful symptom from Dr. Hyman to help you see if your liver is toxic
When you drink coffee or other substances containing caffeine, do you feel wired, have increased aches in muscles and joints, or have hypoglycemic symptoms (anxiety, palpitations, sweating, and dizziness)?
Do you regularly consume any of the following substances or medications: acetaminophen (Tylenol), acid-blocking drugs (Tagamet, Zantac, Pepcid, Prilosec, Prevacid), hormone modulating medications in pills, patches or creams (the birth control pill, estrogen, progesterone, prostate medication), ibuprofen or naproxen, medications for colitis or Crohn’s disease, medications for recurrent headaches, allergy symptoms, nausea, diarrhea, or indigestion?
Have you had jaundice (turned yellow), or have you been told you have Gilbert’s syndrome( an elevation of a liver test for bilirubin)?
Do you have a history of any of the following conditions: breast cancer, smoking-induced lung cancer or other type of cancer, prostate problems, food allergies, sensitivities, or intolerances.
Do you have a family history of Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), or other motor neuron diseases or multiple sclerosis?

Living in a Sea of Toxins: The Problem

Since the turn of the twentieth century, 80,000 new chemicals have been introduced and most have never been tested for safety. Every single person and animal on the planet contains residues of toxic chemicals or metals in its tissues. Chemical toxins move quickly from your blood into storage sites-mostly fat tissue, organs, and bones-so blood or urine levels severely underestimate our total toxic load.

A study based in Michigan found DDT in 70 percent of 4 year olds, even though DDT has been outlawed since 1972. Where were these children exposed to DDT? Probably through their mother’s breast milk (a good reason, Mother’s to detox at least a year before your try to get pregnant is what Dr. Sherry Rogers recommends Dr. Rogers says that in a babies umbilical cord at birth, are found over 200 chemicals!…Another great reason to detox a year before getting pregnant). How did the Mom’s get the DDT?

Many of the countries around the world we buy our produce from uses DDT on their products. Many of these chemicals are stored in fat tissue, making animal products concentrated sources. One hundred percent of beef is contaminated with DDT, as are 93 percent of processed cheese, hot dogs, bologna, turkey, and ice cream, because the soil still contains residues of the pesticide long ago banned. Our house sits where there used to be strawberry fields…I’ve often wondered about the chemicals in our soil.

We are all stewing in this toxic soup and it is playing a major role in the current obesity epidemic and all the other health challenges in this country.

What Are Toxins and Where Do They Come From?

Toxins are poisons that contaminate our bodies in one way or the other. They can come from our normal bodily functions…those we eliminate through our kidneys-urine, and liver and stool-our bile.
When our liver or kidneys fail, we don’t cope well with these toxins. In that last 100 years we have been burdened with an unprecedented number of toxins, and the total load of all toxins-pesticides, industrial chemicals, mercury, and more has exceeded our bodies’ ability to get rid of the, leading to illness. It also leads to metabolic problems that promote weight gain and prevents weight loss.

Where do these toxins come from?
1) Environmental -(external toxins)
2) Our own gut (internal toxins). The by products of our metabolism (internal toxins) need to be processed.
All of them put stress on our liver.

External Toxins include chemical toxins and heavy metals. The heavy metals that cause the most ill health are lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic, nickel, and aluminum. The chemical culprits include toxic chemicals and volatile organic compounds, (VOC’s), solvents (cleaning materials, formaldehyde, toluene, benzene), drugs, alcohol, pesticides, herbicides, and food additives. Certain medications,Dr. Sherry Rogers would say all meds , have toxic effects,. Our liver has to process them and they deplete the body of glutathione which takes the chemicals out of us, along with other nutrients. Medications can cause weight gain, (along with many other effects), and be considered external toxins. Psychotropic meds, in particular MAO inhibitors, lithium, valproate, Remeron, Clozaril, zyprexa, and some selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as Prozac, Zoloft, and Paxil, have all been shown to promote weight gain through various mechanisms, according to Dr. Hyman. (My note-this book focuses on weight gain, but some of these drugs can cause suicidal thoughts, violent behavior, and other bad effects. You are so blessed to find a doctor who will help you get to the root of the problem instead of treating the symptoms with a drug that can cause more problems.)

Drugs can affect our weight, along with other foreign chemicals, such as plastics that are endocrine disruptors. Dr. Rogers contributes a lot of the weight gain in Americans is due to plastics, the number one toxin in our body. Dr. Hyman addresses this as he says these hormone disruptors such as plastics, “interfere with our normal hormone balance, including sex hormones, which may lead to early puberty in girls and increase in hormonal disorders affecting many of the major weight control hormones beside the thyroid including estrogen, testosterone, cortisol, insulin, growth hormone and leptin.
Don’t drink water out of plastic, buy food as much as possible, without plastic. It’s really crazy…even good organic food is packaged in plastic, along with grass feed beef, etc. If you can find a place that still uses paper to package meat, that might be a better option, but that has it’s own set of chemicals, bleach, dioxins, etc.

Internal toxins include microbial compounds (from bacteria, yeast, or other organisms) and the by-products of normal protein metabolism (such as urea and ammonia). Bacteria and yeast in the gut also produce waste products, metabolic products, and cellular debris that can interfere with many body functions. These toxic elements can lead to increased inflammation and oxidative stress (rust). These bacteria produce endotoxins , toxic amines, toxic derivatives of bile, and various carcinogenic substances, such as putrescine and cadaverine (you can imagine why they have such names.

All these toxins affect your ability to lose weight….not to mention a world of other health challenges. Our total toxic load can frustrate attempts at weight loss by impairing two key metabolic organs-the liver and the thyroid-and by damaging our energy-burning factories-the mitochondria.

Toxins interfere with many aspects of metabolism, including reducing thyroid hormone levels and increasing excretion of thyroid hormones by the liver. Toxins also compete with thyroid hormones by blocking the thyroid receptors and by vying for thyroid transport proteins, so the thyroid hormones have no way of getting to their site of action in the first place (like stealing your car).

Bottom line: pesticides and other industrial toxins PCB’s -(by the way, butter has the largest amount of PCB’s according to some info Dr. Soto shared at the “Detoxify or Die,” seminar last week. Hopefully, grass fed butter doesn’t have as much) lower thyroid hormone levels, interfere with their function, and consequently slow metabolic functioning.
You don’t want to lose a lot of weight without detoxing properly. Otherwise the pesticides and chemicals stored in the fat can go to your thyroid and liver and slow your metabolism and cause other problems. In one study Dr. Hyman quotes, the increase of toxins during weight loss in men inhibited normal mitochondrial function and reduced their ability to burn calories, retarding further weight loss, suggestion that toxins affect thyroid levels, damage mitochondria and reduce the ability to burn fat and calories. All of these actions cause both weight gain and resistance to weight loss.

So toxins
directly lower thyroid hormone levels
break down your mitochondria
disturb your metabolic rate
inhibit fat burning
damage the mechanisms by which hormonal signals control your appetite and eating behavior. Leptin is the hormone that tells your brain you are full. Toxins (heavy metals such as mercury or chemical toxins) block these signals.
Over time your brain comes resistant to the effects of leptin, and your are hungry all the time. Exposure to toxins can increase your appetite
Share my painful story of how this happened to me after our house was last sprayed with pesticides….

In additions, toxins interfere with our stress response (our autonomic nervous system) and alter the normal circadian rhythms that control our eating behaviors.

Fatty Liver -The Cause or Effect of Weight Gain?

Too many toxins in your body cause: fatty liver. The more problems you have with your liver, the harder it is to process toxins. Fatty liver is the most common liver disease in America, affecting 20 percent of the population. It is caused by the most abundant toxin in our diet : sugar. Increases in sugar or refined carbs increases insulin and insulin resistance, which leads to an accumulation of fat in your liver cells. Increased fat in your liver cells is produced by eating too much sugar, refined carbs and high fructose corn syrup, which causes insulin resistance. Dr. Hyman says some of his patients have developed cirrhosis of the liver from sugar alone!

A fatty liver produces more inflammatory molecules and free radicals and leads to even more mitochondrial damage. Full of fat and inflammation, the liver can no longer protect you from the damaging effects of other environmental toxins which leads to even further damage.

Your Ability to Detoxify: How Your Genes Control Your Detox System

The effect of toxins on anyone is determined in part by the genetics of that person’s detox system. Some people can mobilize and eliminate toxins well; others have more difficulty…that would be me (my note). Getting rid of heavy metals is important. It depends on specific proteins and enzymes that bind to the metals and transport them out of the cells. Even if you are genetically predisposed to problems with detoxification, there are things you can do to cleanse your body of these terrible materials and limit their effects on us. So glad to know these things, and so thankful for my doctors teaching me these things to help me.

Priming Your Detoxification System: Keeping Yourself Clean and Thin

Block your metabolism
Interfere with your weight control mechanisms
Disrupt your hormones
Damage your mitochondria (energy pack of your cells)
Increase inflammation and oxidative stress
Lower Your Thyroid Hormones
Negatively affect your circadian rhythms of eating
Affect Your Autonomic Nervous System

Yes, I have had all the above and more…and we are continuing to work to reverse this…I’m presently undergoing a heavy metal detox under the supervision of my doctors, and continuing to take supplements to detox my liver, replace nutrients, etc.

This is part of the GOOD News: By making some simple lifestyle choices, we can all reduce our exposure to toxins and dramatically increase our ability to mobilize and get rid of stored toxins. EVEN if you are genetically predisposed to have problems with detoxification, you can improve your detoxification system by the following recommendations.

Step 1 Minimize your exposure to toxins.
Avoid toxins as much as you can. While toxins are everywhere, you can cut down your exposure. The two most important are eating organic food as much as possible, and drinking clean filtered water.

Eat organic food. Eat food and animal products raised without the use of petrochemical pesticides, herbicides, hormones, and antibiotics. Farmers markets (Greene St. at the Nativity opens this Thursday!) Beyond Organics,www.beyondorganics.com, Publix, raise your own garden and meats…some of the many choices we have for organic food. Drink filtered Water-reverse osmosis and carbon filters are the best systems for detoxifying your water.

Use air filters- My doctor, Katherine Henry in Richardson, Tx sold us two that I really like…it knocks out smells quickly, is small and doesn’t take up much room,you can travel easily with it, and it’s quiet. It’s called the GT 3000 by Green Tec and she had the best prices when we bought ours. You can purchase those from her by calling 1972-234-4777. Another friend sells the Austin Air filters recommended by Dr. William Rea, at the Environmental Health Clinic and I like those too. They are a little bulkier, but they do a great job also. You can contact Alison Walton at 1-405-562-0635 for more information about those.Hepa/ULPA filters and ionizers can be helpful in reducing dust, molds, volatile organic compounds, and others sources of indoor air pollution. I turn my up on days the neighbors are spraying their lawns with chemicals, cause those pesticides come into our homes and poison us, see “Poison in the Grass,” http://www.cqs.com/elawn.htm .

Clean and monitor your heating systems-eliminate the release of carbon monoxide, the most common cause of death by poisoning in America

Keep Houseplants-They help filter the air.

Air out your dry cleaning -(me, I don’t recommend it) but if you do, air it out after you bring it home, before wearing it.
Avoid excess exposure to environmental petrochemicals-including garden chemicals, dry cleaning fumes, car exhaust, chap stick, mineral oil, and secondhand smoke, which contains a ton of chemicals and heavy metals (my addition) http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/Tobacco/cessation Does tobacco smoke contain harmful chemicals?
Yes. Tobacco smoke contains chemicals that are harmful to both smokers and nonsmokers. Breathing even a little tobacco smoke can be harmful (1–3).
Of the more than 7,000 chemicals in tobacco smoke, at least 250 are known to be harmful, including hydrogen cyanide, carbon monoxide, and ammonia (1, 4).
Among the 250 known harmful chemicals in tobacco smoke, at least 69 can cause cancer. These cancer-causing chemicals include the following (1, 4):
Arsenic
Benzene
Beryllium (a toxic metal)
1,3–Butadiene (a hazardous gas)
Cadmium (a toxic metal)
Chromium (a metallic element)
Ethylene oxide
Nickel (a metallic element)
Polonium-210 (a radioactive chemical element)
Vinyl chloride
Other toxic chemicals in tobacco smoke are suspected to cause cancer, including the following (3):
Formaldehyde
Benzo[α]pyrene
Toluene
Reduce or eliminate the use of toxic household and personal care products. Underarm deodorant, antacids, and pots and pans containing aluminum are good examples. See http://www.ewg.org for dangers that lurk in common household cleaners, and personal care products. See also, http://www.everydayexposures.com for common household exposures.

Remove allergens and dust.
Minimize electromagnetic radiation -from radios, TV’s, microwaves, wifi…Dr. Soto keeps talking about how dangerous wifi is for us. Dr. Henry warned me about the radiation from our computers.

Reduce ionizing radiation-don’t overdo sun exposure or medical tests such as x rays.
Reduce exposure to heavy metals-cigarette smoke, predatory fish (tuna, swordfish, shark, tile fish, sea bass) river fish, water, lead paint, vaccines, “silver” fillings, the air we breathe. Check out Dr. David Jernigan’s FB page…about heavy metals. Very informative info about how to detox heavy metals and where they come from… Dr. Rodney Soto in our area is very careful to make sure your gut is healed and liver is detoxed before starting heavy metal detox…www.holisticalabama.com. Don’t try to detox heavy metals without a doctor’s supervision…you can get into real trouble. Been there, done that, got the T shirt and it was painful:)…for several months.

Avoid cooking with Teflon-coated pans
Have one to two bowel movements a day.
Drink six to eight glasses of water a day.
Exercise regularly. Lymphatic massage can improve lymph massage can improve lymph flow and help flush toxins out of your tissues into your circulation so they can be detoxified.

Step 2: Sweat it Out and Sweat It Off:

When I first went to the Environmental Health Clinic in Dallas, http://www.ehcd.com several years ago, I (mitzi) was introduced to using the sauna to remove toxins from our bodies. That is a big part of Dr. Rea’s protocol for bringing healing to his patients. Sauna therapy is amazing but you have to be careful as it releases toxins in your blood stream and you can become overloaded, and you have to replace the nutrients you are sweating out…please do these things only under a doctor’s supervision, who is trained in working with detox.

Eating all the right foods, taking the right supplements and minimizing your exposure to toxins are all good ideas, but how can you prevent stored fat toxins from harming you as you lose weight? Take a sauna. It helps to balance the autonomic nervous system, reduce stress, lowers your blood sugar level, helps you burn calories, helps to excrete pesticides and heavy metals through your skin.

Dr. Rea, used the sauna to detoxify all kinds of chemicals and heavy metals in all of his patients, except those who were too sick to use the sauna…they had to get stronger before they could tolerate the toxic effects of the chemicals coming out of the fat, into the bloodstream, and excreted through the kidneys and bowels. Weight loss is inhibited when you have high levels of toxins, in part because toxins block thyroid function. When you get rid of these, you keep your metabolism going faster. Sauna therapy helps you release the toxins through your skin as you sweat and you stop storing toxins that cause your metabolism to slow down.
Below I have included an article about heavy metal detox and sauna therapy that my friend Kara posted. I met her at EHCD and she was very, very sick. She is now a patient of Dr. David Jernigan, and works for him, and is doing amazingly well! She shared some of Dr. Jernigan’s post recently on FB about heavy metals and how they affect our health. Heavy metal detox is best started with the help of your doctor of natural medicine who is trained in the many nuances of the problem. Once the majority of metals have been removed, there are numerous nutraceuticals on the market that are excellent for ongoing general heavy metal detox.

General guidelines for Heavy Metal Detoxification:
• First identify and eliminate various the sources of heavy metal toxicity, such as we discussed in previous Health Tips. Have your doctor determine the primary heavy metal toxins in your body, either through Bio-Resonance Scanning, Applied or Clinical Kinesiology, or through various laboratory tests.

• Eliminate the causes of Candida/yeast overgrowth and help the body reduce the overgrowth of yeast, mold/fungus that are bound to heavy metals. Once these begin to die off one must be certain to mop up the heavy metals that are now released in the die off debris.
• Research supports the use of homeopathic metals to induce the release of metals from the body. Usually a low potency homeopathic (6x-12x) is best to cause a release of metals from the body. With this form of detoxification, if the goal is to remove mercury from the body, your healthcare professional would use homeopathic mercury in a 6-12x potency. If the desire was to remove aluminum then a 6-12x potency of homeopathic aluminum would be used, and so on.

• Drinking distilled water during a metal detoxification program can help remove metals, due to the fact that distilled water is de-mineralized water. This makes it a good chelator of metals as the distilled water can chelate (pull or attract) metals from the tissues so then the body can excrete them via the urine. (General recommendation is up to 3 quarts per day during detox program only) Distilled water should only be drunk during the heavy metal detox program due to the fact that it may ultimately pull beneficial minerals out of the body when used long term.

Step 3: Eat Foods that help you Detoxify:

Dr. Henry first taught me about these special foods after she did a detox gene test on me that showed I have difficult detoxing chemicals. Food plays a major role in priming your system to excrete toxins. Adequate protein is required to supply the amino acids used by the liver to provide the building blocks for the powerhouse of our detoxification system, glutathione. Glutathione is the most critical antioxidant and detoxifier made by the body-and one that is easily depleted in the face of chronic exposure to toxins. If you don’t eat enough Protein , you want be able to produce enough of this important detoxifier.

Step 5: Add Supplements to Support Your Liver and Help You Detoxifying

Extra buffered vitamin C with mineral ascorbates…Vitamin C needs increased in state of toxicity, helps chelate heavy metals, boosts immune system

N-acetylcysteine (NAC) important amino acid derivative helps to boos glutathione and protect the liver from everyday toxic stresses.

Amino acids such as taurine and glycine these are some of the key molecules the liver uses to help detoxify.

3) RBC or whole blood levels of metals, this usually indicates a recent exposure.

Summary:
Toxins are a universal problem in the world we live in. They are something we need to be concerned about for ourselves and families for our health and weight loss.

Toxins inhibit the function of our thyroid and mitochondria as well as throwing our hormones out of balance, all of which wreak havoc on our metabolism.

Some people are genetically predisposed to detoxify more easily than others. The good news is even if you have genetic problems with detoxification, you can do some simple things that will make detoxification easier.

Turn Calories Into Energy: Struggling for Oxygen: Boosting the Furnace

Exercise some motivation required

Our example in our lesson was a man who was 50 and he had always struggled with his weight. He had tried everything and his weight had gone up and down for years. He diligently followed Dr. Hyman’s dietary suggestions and lost about 20 pds. With 30 pds left to go, he put him on a special treadmill that measured his metabolic rate while exercising.

Dr. Hyman measured the amount of oxygen he consumed and the amount of carbon dioxide he exhaled while exercising, which gave an indirect measure of how active his metabolism was. Our ability to burn calories is dependent on the health, number, and efficiency of our mitochondria, the little powerhouses that produce energy in each cell. They take the food we eat, combine it with oxygen, and burn it; that is how we make energy. It is the core of our metabolism.

The amount of oxygen we are able to breathe per minute is directly tied to the number of calories we burn per minute. When we breathe more oxygen, we burn more calories.

Dr. Hyman found that John consumed much less oxygen than he should have based on his age, height, weight, and sex. His mitochondria just weren’t burning enough oxygen.

He sent him to an exercise physiologist who taught him a special exercise program called interval training. Interval training is similar to wind sprints we did in high school.

This type training helps the body become more efficient at taking in oxygen, when make the muscle cells produce more mitochondria and makes the mitochondria more efficient. This helps you burn more calories , not only when you are exercising but when you’re at rest as well. It increases your metabolic fire.

After 4 months, John lost 30 more pds and increased his oxygen consumption almost .

30 percent.

Turning Up Your Metabolic Thermostat

How do we avoid getting old and fat? Mitochondria, the powerhouses of our cells.

In our last chapter we learned that oxidative stress is primarily a by product of burning calories and oxygen inside our motochondria to create energy. Dr. Hyman said that oxidative stress is like car exhaust from burning fuel. We have a small amount that GOD designed our bodies to be able to handle but in our day and age, we eat processed foods, are around chemicals and we have more oxidative stress or free radicals than our bodies are able to cover. These free radicals damage mitochondria, leading to impaired energy production, which causes a reduction in your metabolic power and ability to burn calories.

The great news is we can reverse the damage that been done to your mitochondria and turn up our metabolic fire!

How the Mitochondria Work

Mitochondria are the parts of our cells that combine the calories we consume with oxygen and turn this mixture into energy to run everything in your body. A single cell may have anywhere from 200 to 2,000 or more mitochondria. Cells that work hard such as those in the heart, liver, and muscle contain the most. Mitochondria are very important in keeping us alive.

The rate at which mitochondria transform food and oxygen into energy is called our metabolic rate and is determined by:

  1. the number of mitochondria we have
  2. how efficiently they burn oxygen and calories

    The more mitochondria we have and the more efficiently they consume oxygen, the faster our metabolic rate, the easier it is for our body to burn calories, and the more energy we burn.

We have the ability to dramatically influence both of these factors….by EXERCISE!

Get Moving!

Besides eating breakfast, exercise is the only thing that has been correlated with long term sustained weight loss. This is because the BEST way to increase the number of mitochondria in our body and improve the functioning of the ones already there is to exercise. Exercising increases our muscle mass and oxygen intake. By increasing our muscle mass, we increase the number of cells in our body that contains large number of mitochondria Our muscles have one of the highest concentrations of mitochondria.

Increase our oxygen intake, causes our mitochondria to process more oxygen more quickly. When we work out, they work out and they get better at consuming oxygen and this increases our metabolic power.

The calories we burn when not exercising are important too. By increasing the number and function of the mitochondria in our bodies, we increase our ability to burn calories even while we sleep.

Yo Yo Dieters

Yo Yo Dieter can’t lose weight because they lose muscle and gain back fat. Since muscle is much more metabolically active and burns seventy time as many calories as fat cells, losing muscle slows down their metabolism making it easier to gain weight and harder to lose it, even while they eat the same number of calories. Sarcopenia= muscle loss. Sacro=muscle, penia=loss. Although some people are obviously overweight and you expect them to have a high level of fat, others are called “skinny fat people” because they look skinny but have very little muscle. More muscle=more mitochondria, which is central to boosting your mitochondria power.

At 70, you could end up with the same weight as 20 but be twice as fat because your muscle tissue was replaced with fat!…This is metabolic obesity or “skinny fat syndrome. It has the same dangerous consequences as being obese. The more muscle you lose, you lose mitochondria and our metabolism slows.

Fat Genes

Obese people have fewer and more poorly functioning mitochondria than thin people. Interesting study showed that thin people of those with type 2 diabetes have smaller and slower burning mitochondria than other thin people. Those who have genetically smaller or poorer functioning mitochondria are more likely to gain weight and get diabetes.

Diabetes and mitochondrial function are linked, and some scientists say the primary cause of diabetes is damage to the mitochondria. Too many calories, too much sugar, high-fructose corn syrup, high glycemic load or rapidly absorbed carbohydrates, and too many saturated and trans fats all cause insulin resistance, damage the mitochondria and lead to type 2 diabetes. Anything that interferes with your system-oxidants and free radicals, sugar, trans fats, inflammation, the vicious cycle of counterproductive (plastics, , drugs, household chemicals, farm chemicals, lawn pesticides, home pesticides, air toxins, etc that can also damage our mitochondria.

Take Home message: Even though you might have genes that predispose you to insulin resistance and obesity, you can turn off the activity of these genes through exercise. You can also increase your mitochondrial function and and get a metabolic tune up by adopting certain key nutritional principles and taking special supplements that help turn off slow metabolism genes and turn on the metabolism boosting genes.

Here’s 5 Steps to turn up our metabolic power:

  1. Eliminate the causes of mitochondrial damage…too many calories and not enough nutrients and phytonutrients will increase the damage. Solution: eating a nutrient-dense, phytonutrient rich, unrefined, unprocessed, real, whole food diet. This is at the heart of the Ultrametabolism Prescription. Also identify other causes of damage such as thyroid hormone problems, toxins that damage mitochondria such as mercury, chronic infections, anything that causes inflammation (bad kind of oils contribute), and certain medications ( such as statins, that deplete conenzyme Q10, a nutrient import for energy metabolism).
  1. Exercise Intelligently -if we want to heat up the metabolic fire, we need to exercise….do something you enjoy! Something you like to Play at! I like to ride my bicycle, kayak, walk, hike, cut the grass with a push mower, walk my dogs etc. Pick something you enjoy and do it. The key is finding something you love to do and do it! The more vigorous the activity the better, but just getting up and down to turn TV every time you want to change channels can lead to significant weight loss over time, Dr Hyman says.

He says that exercise 30 minutes a day five times a week helps you achieve the most health benefits, but doing that up to 60 minutes five times a week is needed for weight loss….BUT he is going to teach us a shorter, smarter weight to achieve more benefits called interval training.

MOVE EVERYDAY

Leave off the TV and clean the basement!

Use a step counter to track daily physical activity, try to get up to 10,000 steps a day

Suggestions for moving:

  • sit ups or any form of activity in front of the TV
  • walk during your lunch hour
  • walk instead of driving whenever you can
  • take a family walk after dinner
  • walk to your place of worship instead of driving
  • get a dog and walk it
  • join an exercise group
  • do yard work
  • get off the train or bus stop early and walk
  • work around the house
  • bicycle to the store instead of driving
  • go for a half hour walk instead of driving
  • wash your car by hand
  • park further from the store and walk
  • ask a friend to exercise with you
  • exercise indoors with a video if the weather is bad
  • take a walk instead of a coffee break
  • play with your kids 30 minutes a day
  • dance
  • walk briskly at the mall
  • explore new physical activities.
  • Walk /Bike at the walking trail,beside the creek Rails to Trails, Point Mallard.
  • Take stairs at church instead of the elevator
  • when walking go up hills instead of around them
  • Buy a set of hand weights and use them to play “Simon says,” with your kids…you use them, they don’t. Use them as you watch TV

Breathe More to Build Up Your Metabolic Engine: Aerobic Training:

Aerobic training is an important part of your exercise regimen. It increases the oxygen supply to your body, making your mitochondria more efficient at consuming oxygen. This boosts your metabolic engine…anyone remember Kenneth Cooper? Has an exercise place in Dallas that really taught aerobic training, they taught that at the RAC at the seminary Johnny attended in Ft. Worth.

Anything that speeds up your respiration and heart rate counts as aerobic exercise. Walking, jogging, biking, swimming, and playing tennis are a few examples.

Ideally, you want to train for thirty to sixty minutes five days a week. You also want your pulse to 70 to 85 percent of maximum heart rate. Calculate this by subtracting your age from 220, multiply that amount by .70 to .85 percent, and that gives you target heart rate to use each time your exercise. Reaching it will help with maximum health benefits and dramatically increase our ability to lose weight.

If you haven’t been exercising, start slowly, build up over time. If you have been sedentary, start with no more than ten minutes of low impact aerobic conditioning daily. The next week increase it to 15, then to 20 minutes the following week. Continue until you are at the optimum daily level.

Interval Training

Interval Training is a way to burn more calories after you exercise, during rest or sleep, and get more benefits from your exercise. It is short bursts of high intensity exercise followed by longer periods of lighter exercise- sort of like the wind sprints we did in high school.

Way It’s Done:

Beginner-

  1. Warm up 5 minutes of walking
  2. Speed up and walk fast for 60 seconds
  3. slow down and stroll for 75 seconds
  4. repeat steps 2 and 3 five more times
  5. finish with 5 minutes of walking at a comfortable pace to cool down.

With interval training you can make your cells smarter, improve the efficiency of your mitochondria and even create a few more. You also need to do something to stop the loss of muscle so you need to add strength training to help increase muscle size and strength, increase the number of mitchondria in our body, and boost our metabolic rate so we can burn more calories at rest or sleeping. Ideally you want to build up to two sets of eight to ten repetitions of a weight that leads to muscle fatigue for each major muscle group. A twenty minute routing two to three times a week can cover all the bases.

Dr. Hyman says when people use all the things in this book they sometimes get stuck and can’t seem to lose that last 10 to 15 pds. Aerobic training, including intervals and strength training, can take people all the way. It also reduces your appetite, sets in motion all the hormones in the brain, and immune balancing chemicals that promote a healthy weight and metabolism. Exercise is one of the most potent anti-inflammatories and antioxidants known. It also helps control hunger signals, improves insulin sensitivity, burns off stress chemicals, boosts thyroid function and helps your liver detoxify.

  • Organic acids test is a urine test that measures the by products of metabolism, nutritional deficiencies and more. The cardimetabolic test looks indirectly at the number and power of the mitochondria, the organic acids look at their biochemical efficiency. Metametrix, www.metametrix.com is one of the labs who do this, and they have a list of practitioners in your area who are available to do this test for you.

Closing example was a lady in her late sixties, was a widow, estranged from her family, had a few close friends. She had been a diabetic for years, had rheumatoid arthritis, allergies, hypothyroidism, reflux, and angina. She was always tired and depressed. She weighed more than 250 pds, was five four and had gained and lost weight many times.

He tested “Diane” and found she had many problems processing fats and carbs through her mitochondria. By addressing the damaged mitochondria through reducing the sugars in her diet, exercising moderately, and taking some special supplements, including lipoic acid, CoQ 10 and carnitine, she was able to get her mitochondria burning all that fat and able to stop taking a number of medications.

A year later she had lost 45 pds, her inflammation was gone, her liver was no longer fatty, her blood sugar and triglycerides were normal, and she no longer had diabetes. She had her life back, with energy and joy back in her step. When we tested her fat, carbohydrate, and energy metabolism, it was all back to normal.

The hardest ingredient in suffering is often time. We may not see now the outcome of the beautiful plan which God is hiding in the shadow of His hand; it yet may be long concealed; but faith may be sure that He is sitting on the throne, calmly waiting the hour when, with adoring rapture, we shall say, “All things have worked together for good.” Like Joseph, let us be more careful to learn all the lessons in the school of sorrow than we are anxious for the hour of deliverance. There is a “need-be” for every lesson, and when we are ready, our deliverance will surely come, and we shall find that we could not have stood in our place of higher service without the very things that were taught us in the ordeal. God is educating us for the future, for higher service and nobler blessings; and if we have the qualities that fit us for a throne, nothing can keep us from it when God’s time has come. Don’t steal tomorrow out of God’s hands. Give God time to speak to you and reveal His will. he is never too late; learn to wait.

Finding the Source of Rusting-the example Dr. Hyman gave in our book was that of lady in her mid 40’s who apart from premature menopause and bone loss, was otherwise healthy. She went through the stress of a divorce and became mildly depressed. The doctors put her on Prozac and she couldn’t tolerate it so they worked with her on alternatives. Shortly after her divorce she moved into a new house and that is when things went haywire. She developed chronic fatigue and low thyroid function and gained more and more weight until she was at least 60 pounds heavier than when he first met her. Despite exercising and trying to eat well, her liver became fatty, her blood sugar, insulin, and cholesterol levels went way up, and her stress hormones soared…she went on disability as a teacher. Her tests showed many things, including a high level of oxidative stress or “rusting,” shown by the blood and urine tests for rancid fats and damaged DNA.

This rusting wreaks havoc on the metabolism, primarily through cell damage. They couldn’t get hers under control. Things went downhill…they treated her for food allergies, got rid of the mercury in her system, tried antioxidants and many supplements. Then when her daughter got juvenile arthritis and got better when they went on vacation, they realized something in her environment was making her sick.

They checked for mold and hit the jack pot! They found antibodies to the exact same mold in her blood, as well as antibodies to the mold toxins. Rusting Leads to Weight Gain

Free radicals or reactive oxygen species (ROSs) are taking over. That’s why we are gaining weight. Free radicals cause a condition called oxidative stress, or oxidation. Oxidation we can relate to is commonly seen as the rusting of a car or a sliced apple turning brown. It is responsible for the wrinkles on your face exposed to too much sunlight over the years. Rust not only exists in the outside world but we actually rust on the inside. This contributes to impaired metabolism, weight gain, and aging. Think of oxidation as wrinkles on the inside.

Oxidation is a chemical reaction found everywhere in nature. When it runs out of control is when we get into trouble. When something is oxidized, it is damaged by oxygen but not the form of oxygen we breathe which is O2 oxygen. Oxygenation is caused by a lonely form of oxygen called just O.

Dr. Hyman gave a good illustration to help us understand oxygenation. Oxygen molecules like to be paired. They like to have 2 electrons. Free radicals are a form of oxygen that only has one oxygen molecule so they run around your body looking for an electron to steal from another molecule-sort of like stealing someone’s spouse. The molecule that it borrowed an electron from is damaged or oxidized. So then the damaged molecule runs around looking to find an electron to steal. This process leaves a wake of destruction in its path-damaged DNA, damaged cell membranes, rancid cholesterol, stiff arteries that look like rusty pipes, and wrinkles. Oxidized tissues and cells don’t function normally. Part of the malfunction is the promotion of weight gain and a damaged metabolism.

Here is a list of symptoms common to people who are dealing with a high level of oxidation:

  • fatigue
  • poor mental function and cognition
  • lowered resistance to infection (perhaps frequent colds or sins infections)
  • muscle weakness
  • muscle and joint pains
  • digestive problems (reflux, irritable bowel syndrome, ulcers)
  • anxiety
  • depression
  • headaches
  • hypoglycemia (low blood sugar-dizziness, anxiety, sweating, nausea

Oxidation is balanced by antioxidants in a process called reduction. Antioxidants whether obtained from diet or supplements, or those produced naturally in the body,reduce the number of free radicals, curbing damage to your cells and metabolism.

Reducing oxidizing molecules in your body will make you healthier, reduce your weight, and wrinkles. The dietary balance between antioxidants (found primarily in colorful plant foods and supplements) and oxidants ( produced mostly by nutrient poor, refined, and processed foods with too many calories such as soft drinks and baked goods) ultimately controls the whole process of aging and chronic disease, including weight and metabolism.

Why Free Radical Are Taking Over

Most of the oxidation of free radicals occurs during the natural process of metabolism, turning calories or energy from food and oxygen from the air into energy usable by the body. The is normal and normally limited because we historically ate food full of antioxidants, such as berries and nuts.

Now we exist on large quantities of food consisting of empty calories…they are called empty because they contain no antioxidants or nutrients.

This balance between oxidants and antioxidants is central to heal because it controls many cellular messages, including the ones related to weight. Antioxidants protect us against weight loss, inflammation or free radicals and diabetes; oxidants or free radicals trigger a cascade that leads gene messages to be turned on that promotes weight gain, slows metabolism, increase inflammation, and causes diabetes.

Weapons of Mass Destruction

The single most important controllable factor regulating the oxidative stress in our body is our diet. Consuming too many calories and not enough antioxidants from colorful plant foods results in too many free radicals.

We are in trouble with free radicals for two reasons:

  1. We eat a diet that has too many empty calories and not enough antioxidants
  2. Our reduced nutrient intake in the form of vitamins and minerals limits our ability to make our own antioxidants, which need zinc and selenium to function properly.

Ways to Increase the Amount of Antioxidants in Our Bodies:

 

Step One: Eliminate the Cause of Oxidation

  • avoid overeating -this creates more exhaust that is made in the mitochondria…GOD made our bodies to be able to handle this, but we get easily overwhelmed and aren’t able to handle all the exhaust
  • avoid charbroiled foods…these foods contain hydrocarbons that generate more free radicals in the body
  • avoid excess sugar and refined carbohydrates-empty calories, they burn hotter and generate more free radicals
  • avoid alcohol- (I say do this to protect your witness for CHRIST) but the health reason is it can increase free radicals.
  • Reduce exposure to toxins and petrochemicals (in plastic storage containers, tap water, and pesticides) and heavy metals (such as contaminated fish)., car exhaust, cigarette smoke, ? Drink filtered water, eat organic food, fruits, vegetables, and animal products raised without hormones, antibiotics, or pesticides.
  • Minimize exposure to ionizing radiation-includes UV radiation from excess sun exposure (we need some some exposure to get Vit. D, ), x-rays, and radon-you can get kits to test your house for radon…one place to order is www.aehf.com
  • reduce exposure to tobacco smoke (first or secondhand)-cigarette smoke has more than 4000 toxic chemicals that lead to accelerated oxidative stress.
  • Reduce air pollutants-place HEPA filters in your home. I love the GT 3000 I got from Dr. Henry, and I have a friend who also sells the Austin Air Filters which we have too. Air filters make a ton of difference. My friend was struggling to stay in her home and bought an air filter from Dr. Henry and it has made all the difference in the world…she is able to stay and sleep comfortably in her home. 

Someone in class mentioned certain plants help to clean the air in your home…below are some of the plants.

Breath of Fresh Air

  • Avoid Excessive or insufficient exercise-more than 60 minutes a day exercising vigorously is usually considered excessive, less than 30 minutes five times a week isn’t enough.
  • Get at least 7-9 hours of sleep each night…sleep deprivation increases stress, and stress increases oxidative stress, promoting weight gain, among other things
  • Treat Chronic Infections-hidden or chronic infections promote oxidative stress
  • Reduce internal sources of oxidative stress- processed foods, high hypoglycemic foods, too many calories, and abnormal levels of gut bacteria are all forms of oxidative stress.
  • Improve your liver and gut detoxification-ch. 14. If the liver is overloaded with toxins from food (too much sugar or trans fats) or toxins from the environment such as pesticides or mercury, it becomes inflamed and produces more free radicals. Loving your liver is key to keeping the free radicals under control.
  • Reduce your exposure to fungal toxins-environmental and internal molds and fungi. Many people work in sick building or have moldy basements or bathrooms. Dietary antioxidants (vitamins, minerals, polyphenols, and phytonutrients) are the major factors that protect our cells from excess oxidative damage and impaired metabolism. Nutrient poor diets signal to the cell messengers to gain weight. If you are rusting, you are also gaining weight.

To reduce oxidative stress, begin by increasing colorful plant foods, rich in phytonutrients such as flavonoids and polyphenols found in teas, cocoa…resveratol.

I wrote a blog before CHRISTmas about possible causes of the tragic shooting of the school entitled “Prescriptions Meds, Toxins, and Violent Behavior.” https://hisgraceissufficienthealth.com/2012/12/16/217/ The article was in response to another article i read by Mike Adams how psychotropic drugs are contributing to the violent behavior that we are so often hearing about these days.  I backed up and said that we need to examine the reasons the people are on the drugs to start with…environmental causes such as heavy metals, chemicals, nutritional deficiencies…all of which can contribute to depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive behavior, bipolar disorders, autism, and more.  Over the holidays, i read some more articles that i wanted to share with you about the disturbing behavior patterns we are seeing more and more frequently in our society.

I used to would say, you just need to discipline your child, or your child needs to know CHRIST and have a change of heart.  Those things may be true…indeed every child needs consistent discipline in love, and most importantly needs to know CHRIST as their personal LORD and SAVIOR.  However, when i began to suffer from the effects of chemicals and pesticide poisoning, i never dreamed how chemicals could make me feel just by being around them.  They can make the mildest mannered person mean.  People who suffer from chemical sensitivities can be around a minute amount of something they are sensitive to and it makes them very irritable.  If you add a prescription drug, along with the plethora of other environmental chemicals and toxins we are around daily, we can be asking for a volcanic eruption, literally in a person’s personality. Detoxing the chemicals and replacing the person’s nutrients, are keys in helping a person return to healthy person emotion, physically, and even spiritually.  It’s amazing the difference that detoxing and replacing nutrients makes in a person’s health and personality.  I know because i am one whose life has been dramatically affected by chemicals and i have been so blessed to have  been helped by knowledgable doctors who have helped lead me out of the darkness i was in.

One more thing as i close out this blog…you remember several years ago the lady who drowned her five children in Houston, Tx?  This really hit hard with me because i learned that she was a homeschool mom, and she was also a nurse.  I too was both of those.  This was a CHRISTian family from all i could learn, and they had one of the same posters with the names of CHRIST on their wall that i had on mine.  This really bothered me, and i later learned from an article that Dr. Sherry Rogers wrote that this mom had worked as a chemotherapy nurse. Working around chemo drugs alone could have altered this young mom’s chemistry in her body. Dr. Rogers wrote about nutritional deficiencies and how they can cause us to be mentally unstable until they are corrected.  At the time, this young mom was off of her psychiatric drugs i believe.  I remember she wasn’t taking them.  I am sad to say, my brother in law, killed himself suffering from a bipolar disorder, and he wasn’t on his medication at the time. This brings me back to a difficult place…at the beginning we read an article where the shooters were on antidepressants and they killed…the bottom two i listed were off their meds at the time when they killed and were killed.  My brother in law was a pastor…he knew better spiritually but his flesh was sick. His behavior had been erratic for years.  This young mom who drowned her 5 kids in the bath tub also seemed to be a CHRISTian….it’s time we looked further  than blaming guns and even sin. The mother who drowned her children didn’t have a gun…and  look also at environmental factors that are causing us to display violent, very violent behavior that we don’t understand.  LORD, help us…“My people perish for lack of knowledge.” Hosea 6:4

Prescription Meds, Toxins and Violent Behavior

Tonight i read the article below about the possible cause of the violent behavior in the young man who killed the children and adults in Connecticut.   Mike Adams put into words what i had expressed to a friend of mine earlier today…i was concerned that there were also environmental issues contributing to his violent behavior.  In this case, autism, which is often caused by heavy metals, other environmental exposures of this young man, and the drugs that were being used to control his behavior.

I am not sharing this to be insensitive to those on medication, but we need to find the root causes of what is driving behavior that is often treated by psychotropic drugs. Many times depression and anxiety can be caused by household chemicals, food allergies, heavy metals. There are many environmental causes that need to be treated through detox, nutrition, etc. Autism, which was mentioned as what this young man had, often follows vaccines, and antibiotic usage. When children are born they have over 200 chemicals in their blood from their parents. Vaccines contain aluminum and mercury that can contribute to autistic behavior. You have to get the heavy metals out of the body for the person to recover. Covering up the symptoms with drugs can lead to violent behavior. Please consider this as you read this article. Just wanted to share this with you.  Chemicals can and do make us have violent behavior.  I am normally a pretty mild mannered person but i have struggled with chemical sensitivities for years, and being around formaldehyde, perfumes, laundry detergent, fabric softeners, and air fresheners can make me very irritable, very, very irritable…just ask my family.  I can’t imagine taking a prescription drug and adding that to the mix. (NaturalNews) In mass shootings involving guns and mind-altering medications, politicians immediately seek to blame guns but never the medication. Nearly every mass shooting that has taken place in America over the last two decades has a link to psychiatric medication, and it appears today’s tragic event is headed in the same direction.

According to ABC News, Adam Lanza, the alleged shooter, has been labeled as having “mental illness” and a “personality disorder.” These are precisely the words typically heard in a person who is being “treated” with mind-altering psychiatric drugs.

One of the most common side effects of psychiatric drugs is violent outbursts and thoughts of suicide.

Note: The shooter was originally mid-identified as Ryan Lanza but has now been corrected to Adam Lanza.

The Columbine High School shooters were, of course, on psychiatric drugs at the time they shot their classmates in 1999. Suicidal tendencies and violent, destructive thoughts are some of the admitted behavioral side effects of mind-altering prescription medications.

No gun can, by itself, shoot anyone. It must be triggered by a person who makes a decision to use it. And while people like NY Mayor Bloomberg are predictably trying to exploit the deaths of these children to call for guns to be stripped from all law abiding citizens who have done nothing wrong whatsoever, nobody calls for medication control.

Why is that? After all, medication alters the mind that controls the finger that pulls the trigger. The saying that “guns kill people” is physically impossible. People kill other people, and as we all learned from watching the O.J. Simpson trial, you don’t need a gun to commit murder.

We should be outlawing psychiatric medications, not an inanimate piece of metal

If there is to be any legitimate debate on so-called “gun control” in the aftermath of this shooting, the only idea that makes any sense at all would be to restrict gun purchases by people currently taking psychiatric medications. But even that restriction would of course be abused by the government to take guns away from perfectly healthy, law-abiding citizens who innocently seek treatment for mild depression and who honestly have no clue that psychiatric drugs can cause violent behavior.

A far better solution here would be to outlaw psychiatric drugs that cause the violent behavior in the first place. After all, if you only outlaw guns but fail to eliminate the drugs that cause the violence, people dosed up on mind-altering meds will simply find alternate weapons to commit the same acts of violence. You don’t think a crazy guy with a sword can hack up 20 or 30 kids in a school? A sword, a knife or even a pick axe can be just as deadly as a firearm.

A guy with a chain saw can do all kinds of damage if he’s out of his mind. Should we ban chain saws?

I have thought for quite some time that people on medication are dangerous operating automobiles on public roads. If driving drunk is illegal, why isn’t “driving on meds” illegal? Why are wildly medicated people allowed to operate heavy machinery?

A high-ranking police officer in Tucson, Arizona once told me, on the record, that one-third of all automobile accidents in the city of Tucson were related to medicated drivers. That’s an astonishing number, and if true, it would seem to indicate that medications are more dangerous than gunswhen it comes to the total daily body count.

Do the math: medications are far more deadly than guns

Medications kill roughly 100,000 Americans each year according to study statistics. The actual number is either 98,000 or 106,000 depending on which study you believe.

For guns to be as deadly as medications, you’d have to see a Newton-style massacre happening ten times a day, every day of the year. Only then would “gun violence” even match up to the number of deaths caused by doctor-prescribed, FDA-approved medications.

Why does America grieve for the children killed in Newton, but not for the medical victims killed by Big Pharma? Are the lives of people on medication not valuable compared to the lives of children in elementary school? Will Obama shed a tear for the victims of Big Pharma, or are his tears reserved only for politically expedient events that push his agenda of unconstitutional gun restrictions?

If our goal us to stop the violence in America, we are completely dishonest if we do not consider the mental causes of violent behavior. And that starts with mind-altering psychiatric drugs which I believe have unleashed a drug-induced epidemic of violence across our nation.

Obama, Bloomberg and others will point to guns and try to convince you that inanimate metal objects are the cause of this violence. But they lie by omission. No guns shoots itself. The trigger must be pulled by someone, and the mental state of that person is the primary cause of the resulting action. To ignore this fundamental chain of facts is brutally dishonest.

My personal testimony is i was a skinny kid, and an athlete in college.  When i got pregnant with John Mac, i gained a LOT of weight and never thought i would struggle with my weight like i did.   After had him, i had a cascade of health issues, but never associated anything with weight gain.  I eventually lost the weight i gained pregnant when i went on a low carb diet, but the health problems persisted…in my thirties, gradually continued to gain weight no matter how healthy i ate.  When i started detoxing in the sauna, i was told i would lose weight, i didn’t and have gradually continued to gain.  
When i was on thyroid medicine, my weight stabilized  but i wasn’t able to lose. When i started seeing Dr. Soto, one of the first things i told him, was i  had gained weight and couldn’t lose weight.  He showed me the book, Ultrametabolism,, and to be honest i was a little offended.  I thought weight gain isn’t my main problem… and didn’t want him to think so:).
     As i began to read Ultrametabolism, it gave me a greater understanding of what my doctor in Dallas has been trying to help me with for years with my thyroid, adrenals, and all.  It was very freeing that it wasn’t my fault that i wasn’t losing weight.  The LORD knows i’ve been trying to eat healthy for years, not perfect, but there were some key mistakes i was missing, one was eating refined carbohydrates…albeit they were organic gluten free, but they were still refined.  Our body works best eating whole grains instead of processed, even organic, gluten free grains.
