“I Can’t Even Walk Without You Holding My Hand”

In all things

Faith already knows that everything that happens fits into a pattern for good to those who love God. An inconvenience is always, whether we see it or not, a blessed inconvenience.” Elisabeth Elliot, www.elisabethelliot.org

Dear Friends,

This is going to be a little different from the previous weeks, but more like my posts of old when i was in the trenches of trying to feel better each day because to be honest, i have been taken back somewhat to those days that i struggled so.  I got sprayed by the mosquito truck a couple of weeks ago walking my dog, and I’ve been taken back down memory lane as I’m continuing to recover.  Has not been a comfortable time, but it’s been a time the LORD has reminded me of my roots, That I can’t even walk with GOD holding my hand.

My friend, gospel singer Tony Greene, went to be with JESUS five years ago this week.  GOD has taken down memory lane listening to some of the songs the Greenes sang that ministered so much to me during a difficult time of suffering in my life and continues to minister to me now. One song in particular was called, “I Can’t Even Walk Without You Holding My Hand.”  I remember the first time i heard Tony share the story how GOD gave the songwriter that song.  It was during a very difficult trial he and his wife were going through. Like most things that really matter in our lives, they come through a time of difficult suffering, and that is when we hear GOD the most.  I love the quote from C.S. Lewis that says, “GOD shouts to us in our pain, and whispers in our joy.” I can relate to that.  I always know I’m in a trial when i hear the LORD’s voice through HIS WORD, and people and other means so much louder. So this week, i wanted to share with you that beautiful song that Tony Greene sang that night at Truth Baptist Church that first penetrated my soul and led me to go to the altar, one of many times, i went to the altar when i went to hear the Greene’s sing. The recording is not at Truth Baptist, but somewhere else Tony sang,it  and I wanted you to get to hear the whole story and song.  I pray that it ministers to your heart as it does mine.

“I Can’t Even Walk” sang by the Greenes

A few weeks ago, one of my friends asked me if she could interview me for a health and healing show she does on her blogsite called http://livehealthyandblessed.com/.  Between her jammed packed schedule and my not feeling well at times, it took us several weeks to get to the interview and i really appreciate her being patient with me. GOD’s timing is perfect and finally one Tuesday night, it worked right for both of us! So below is the link you can watch and hear a whole lot of the health journey that GOD has led me on.  I pray that it will be an encouragement and blessing to those who are looking for answers amidst very difficult health trials. I am very thankful that GOD has brought Plexus into my life at this point in my journey and continues to use it to help me regain my health.  Thank you so much, Melissa Beshore for giving me the opportunity to share my journey:

Ultrametabolism: Ch. 15 Love Your Liver, Cleansing Yourself of Toxic Chemicals

Ultrametabolism, Chapter 15
Love Your Liver-
Cleansing Yourself of Toxic Weight

Matthew 10:8 “Heal the sick, raise the dead, cure those with leprosy, and cast out demons. Give as freely as you have received!” Tell about missionary nurses who were killed in One Year Book of CHRISTIAN HISTORY.

Streams In the Desert for April 26

“I even reckon all things as pure loss because of the priceless privilege of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.”(Phil. 3:8.) (Weymouth.)

SHINING is always costly. Light comes only at the cost of that which produces it. An unlit candle does no shining. Burning must come before shining. We can-not be of great use to others without cost to ourselves. Burning suggests suffering. We shrink from pain.

We are apt to feel that we are doing the greatest good in the world when we are strong, and able for active duty, and when the heart and hands are full of kindly service.

When we are called aside and can only suffer; when we are sick; when we are consumed with pain; when all our activities have been dropped, we feel that we are no longer of use, that we are not doing anything.

But, if we are patient and submissive, it is almost certain that we are a greater blessing to the world in our time of suffering and pain than we were in the days when we thought we were doing the most of our work. We are burning now, and shining because we are burning. — Evening Thoughts.

“The glory of tomorrow is rooted in the drudgery of today.”

Many want the glory without the cross, the shining without the burning, but crucifixion comes before coronation.

Have you heard the tale of the aloe plant, Away in the sunny clime? By humble growth of a hundred years, It reaches its blooming time; And then a wondrous bud at its crown, Breaks into a thousand flowers; This floral queen, in its blooming seen, Is the pride of the tropical bowers, But the plant to the flower is sacrifice, For it blooms but once, and it dies.

Have you further heard of the aloe plant, That grows in the sunny clime; How every one of its thousand flowers, As they drop in the blooming time, Is an infant plant that fastens its roots, In the place where it falls on the ground, And as fast as they drop from the dying stem, Grow lively and lovely around? By dying, it liveth a thousand-fold, In the young that spring from the death of the old.

Have you heard the tale of the pelican, The Arabs’ Gimel el Bahr, That lives in the African solitudes, Where the birds that live lonely are? Have you heard how it loves its tender young, And cares and toils for their good, It brings them water from mountain far, And fishes the seas for their food. In famine it feeds them─what love can devise! The blood of its bosom─and, feeding when, dies.

Have you heard this tale─the best of them all─ The tale of the Holy and True, He dies, but His life, in untold souls, Lives on in the world anew; His seed prevails, and is filling the earth, As the stars fill the sky above. He taught us to yield up the love of life, For the sake of the life of love. His death is our life, His loss is our gain; The joy for the tear, the peace for the pain. ─Selected.

Ultrametabolism: Ch. 15 Toxins and Obesity: A Missing Link?

Our example in the book was a truck driver who had hepatitis C from a sexual encounter (a sad consequence of sin, my addition). He drank, smoked, his diet was typical of a hardworking middle class man: eggs and sausage, doughnuts, meat sandwiches, pepperoni pizza, steak and wine, bread, potatoes, and pasta, veggies, occasionally.
Before Dr. Hyman saw him, he had stopped smoking and drinking a year before, and his liver function and fatigued had gotten much worse. He was very stressed from losing his wife and his job, was on injections of interferon, latest medical treatment for hepatitis, but his white blood cell count was still high. His blood pressure, blood sugar, and triglycerides were on the rise.
He went to one of Dr. Hyman’s workshops called “Detox for Life,” (www.ultrametabolism.com/detox), and was ready for a change. He was worried, his liver was scarring, things were starting to fail, and he was gaining weight around the middle. He had inflammation in his liver from the chronic hepatitis infection, and he also had a fatty liver from all the refined carbs and junk food he consumed.

Joe was toxic, years of smoking, drinking, and poor eating had poisoned his body, especially his liver. After five days on the detox program, eating a simple diet of vegetables, rice, beans, a detoxifying rice protein shake, a few herbs for the liver, and fiber to clean out the gut, along with saunas, and rest, he felt much better than he had in years.

Dr. Hyman advised him to change his diet to control his insulin and blood sugar, and recommended that he introduce some special foods such as broccoli, garlic, dandelion greens and artichokes, to boost his detoxification system and protect his liver. Dr. Hyman added some N-acetylcysteine (NAC) , alpha-lipoic acid, and selenium, and milk thistle to further support his fatty liver.

After three months, he felt better, his weight had dropped by more than 20 pds, and his viral counts were lower than they had been in years. Even with a compromised liver, healing can occur.

I kind of feel like this guy’s story is similar to mine….i never had hep. C, but I sure was exposed to secondhand smoke growing up, along with pesticides sprayed on cotton fields, numerous antibiotics, a powerful anti inflammatory drug in my adulthood to control fibromyalgia pain (now I know from toxins), chlorine from working inside as a lifeguard, etc. Several years ago, when I was barely able to walk because of toxins and allergic reactions, I had a liver test that showed my liver enzymes were elevated…that was the ONLY test on conventional tests that indicated anything was wrong with me.

Although I have done many detox methods through the years, and about killed myself quiet honestly before i was under a doctor’s supervision, it was only last fall that I did an intensive liver detox under my doctor’s supervision. It wasn’t easy, and though I struggled, I improved and was able to progress to the heavy metal detox. The same herbs and supplements Dr. Hyman recommends were those my doc recommends. I am very thankful my body tolerated the supplements for the detox. Dr. Soto is very careful about detoxing period before the gut is healed, so I don’t recommend going out and buying these supplements to detox your liver before you make sure your gut is in a good place. Otherwise it can make you very, very sick, and that has happened to me too, a couple of years ago, when I tried to detox intensively without making the right preparations to my gut beforehand…let’s just say, I crashed and burned, and it was very, very uncomfortable.  I did years ago too, trying to detox on my on.

This topic is near and dear to my heart because this is where I am walking…as I have sought the keys to my complete healing for the past several years, I definitely feel this is a “biggie.” First you have to heal the gut, then the liver. I have gradually gained 40-50 pds even though I have been doing a sauna detox since 1999. I knew there was something that wasn’t right, because I have been eating healthy foods for a long time and was still unable to lose weight.

Environmental Toxins Cause Weight Gain
Toxins within our bodies and from our environment both contribute to obesity. Getting rid of toxins and boosting our natural detox system are essential components of long-term weight loss and a healthy metabolism.

How Well is Your Detox System Working?
Are you constipated
Do you urinate small amounts of dark, strong-smelling urine only a few times a day?
Do you rarely break into a real sweat?
Do you have one or more of the following symptoms: fatigue, muscle aches, headaches, concentration, or memory problems?
Do you have fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome?
Do you drink tap or well water?
Do you have your clothes dry cleaned?
Do you work or live in a “tight” building with poor ventilation or windows that don’t open?
Do you live in a large urban or industrial area?
Do you use household or lawn and garden chemicals or have your house or apartment treated for bugs by an exterminator?
Do you have more than one or two mercury amalgams (“silver” fillings)?

Do you eat large fish (swordfish, tuna, shark, tile fish ) more than once a week?
Are you bothered by one or more of the following: gasoline or diesel fumes, perfumes, new-car smells, fabric stores, dry cleaning, hair spray or other strong odors, soaps, detergents, tobacco smoke, or chlorinated water?
Do you have a negative reaction when you consume foods containing garlic or onions, MSG, sulfite’s, (found in wine, salad bars, dried fruit) sodium benzoate (a preservative) red wine, cheese, bananas, chocolate or small amount of alcohol? I am definitely not endorsing drinking…just sharing what might be a helpful symptom from Dr. Hyman to help you see if your liver is toxic
When you drink coffee or other substances containing caffeine, do you feel wired, have increased aches in muscles and joints, or have hypoglycemic symptoms (anxiety, palpitations, sweating, and dizziness)?
Do you regularly consume any of the following substances or medications: acetaminophen (Tylenol), acid-blocking drugs (Tagamet, Zantac, Pepcid, Prilosec, Prevacid), hormone modulating medications in pills, patches or creams (the birth control pill, estrogen, progesterone, prostate medication), ibuprofen or naproxen, medications for colitis or Crohn’s disease, medications for recurrent headaches, allergy symptoms, nausea, diarrhea, or indigestion?
Have you had jaundice (turned yellow), or have you been told you have Gilbert’s syndrome( an elevation of a liver test for bilirubin)?
Do you have a history of any of the following conditions: breast cancer, smoking-induced lung cancer or other type of cancer, prostate problems, food allergies, sensitivities, or intolerances.
Do you have a family history of Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), or other motor neuron diseases or multiple sclerosis?

If you answered yet to the questions above or most of them…you are toxic and you need to detox under a doctors supervision.

Living in a Sea of Toxins: The Problem

Smoke Stack

Since the turn of the twentieth century, 80,000 new chemicals have been introduced and most have never been tested for safety. Every single person and animal on the planet contains residues of toxic chemicals or metals in its tissues. Chemical toxins move quickly from your blood into storage sites-mostly fat tissue, organs, and bones-so blood or urine levels severely underestimate our total toxic load.

A study based in Michigan found DDT in 70 percent of 4 year olds, even though DDT has been outlawed since 1972. Where were these children exposed to DDT? Probably through their mother’s breast milk (a good reason, Mother’s to detox at least a year before your try to get pregnant is what Dr. Sherry Rogers recommends Dr. Rogers says that in a babies umbilical cord at birth, are found over 200 chemicals!…Another great reason to detox a year before getting pregnant). How did the Mom’s get the DDT?

Many of the countries around the world we buy our produce from uses DDT on their products. Many of these chemicals are stored in fat tissue, making animal products concentrated sources. One hundred percent of beef is contaminated with DDT, as are 93 percent of processed cheese, hot dogs, bologna, turkey, and ice cream, because the soil still contains residues of the pesticide long ago banned. Our house sits where there used to be strawberry fields…I’ve often wondered about the chemicals in our soil.

We are all stewing in this toxic soup and it is playing a major role in the current obesity epidemic and all the other health challenges in this country.

What Are Toxins and Where Do They Come From?

Toxins are poisons that contaminate our bodies in one way or the other. They can come from our normal bodily functions…those we eliminate through our kidneys-urine, and liver and stool-our bile.
When our liver or kidneys fail, we don’t cope well with these toxins. In that last 100 years we have been burdened with an unprecedented number of toxins, and the total load of all toxins-pesticides, industrial chemicals, mercury, and more has exceeded our bodies’ ability to get rid of the, leading to illness. It also leads to metabolic problems that promote weight gain and prevents weight loss.

Where do these toxins come from?
1) Environmental -(external toxins)
2) Our own gut (internal toxins). The by products of our metabolism (internal toxins) need to be processed.
All of them put stress on our liver.

External Toxins include chemical toxins and heavy metals. The heavy metals that cause the most ill health are lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic, nickel, and aluminum. The chemical culprits include toxic chemicals and volatile organic compounds, (VOC’s), solvents (cleaning materials, formaldehyde, toluene, benzene), drugs, alcohol, pesticides, herbicides, and food additives. Certain medications,Dr. Sherry Rogers would say all meds , have toxic effects,. Our liver has to process them and they deplete the body of glutathione which takes the chemicals out of us, along with other nutrients. Medications can cause weight gain, (along with many other effects), and be considered external toxins. Psychotropic meds, in particular MAO inhibitors, lithium, valproate, Remeron, Clozaril, zyprexa, and some selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as Prozac, Zoloft, and Paxil, have all been shown to promote weight gain through various mechanisms, according to Dr. Hyman. (My note-this book focuses on weight gain, but some of these drugs can cause suicidal thoughts, violent behavior, and other bad effects. You are so blessed to find a doctor who will help you get to the root of the problem instead of treating the symptoms with a drug that can cause more problems.)

Drugs can affect our weight, along with other foreign chemicals, such as plastics that are endocrine disruptors. Dr. Rogers contributes a lot of the weight gain in Americans is due to plastics, the number one toxin in our body. Dr. Hyman addresses this as he says these hormone disruptors such as plastics, “interfere with our normal hormone balance, including sex hormones, which may lead to early puberty in girls and increase in hormonal disorders affecting many of the major weight control hormones beside the thyroid including estrogen, testosterone, cortisol, insulin, growth hormone and leptin.
Don’t drink water out of plastic, buy food as much as possible, without plastic. It’s really crazy…even good organic food is packaged in plastic, along with grass feed beef, etc. If you can find a place that still uses paper to package meat, that might be a better option, but that has it’s own set of chemicals, bleach, dioxins, etc.

Plastic Water Bottle

Internal toxins include microbial compounds (from bacteria, yeast, or other organisms) and the by-products of normal protein metabolism (such as urea and ammonia). Bacteria and yeast in the gut also produce waste products, metabolic products, and cellular debris that can interfere with many body functions. These toxic elements can lead to increased inflammation and oxidative stress (rust). These bacteria produce endotoxins , toxic amines, toxic derivatives of bile, and various carcinogenic substances, such as putrescine and cadaverine (you can imagine why they have such names.

All these toxins affect your ability to lose weight….not to mention a world of other health challenges. Our total toxic load can frustrate attempts at weight loss by impairing two key metabolic organs-the liver and the thyroid-and by damaging our energy-burning factories-the mitochondria.

Toxins interfere with many aspects of metabolism, including reducing thyroid hormone levels and increasing excretion of thyroid hormones by the liver. Toxins also compete with thyroid hormones by blocking the thyroid receptors and by vying for thyroid transport proteins, so the thyroid hormones have no way of getting to their site of action in the first place (like stealing your car).

Bottom line: pesticides and other industrial toxins PCB’s -(by the way, butter has the largest amount of PCB’s according to some info Dr. Soto shared at the “Detoxify or Die,” seminar last week. Hopefully, grass fed butter doesn’t have as much) lower thyroid hormone levels, interfere with their function, and consequently slow metabolic functioning.
You don’t want to lose a lot of weight without detoxing properly. Otherwise the pesticides and chemicals stored in the fat can go to your thyroid and liver and slow your metabolism and cause other problems. In one study Dr. Hyman quotes, the increase of toxins during weight loss in men inhibited normal mitochondrial function and reduced their ability to burn calories, retarding further weight loss, suggestion that toxins affect thyroid levels, damage mitochondria and reduce the ability to burn fat and calories. All of these actions cause both weight gain and resistance to weight loss.

So toxins
directly lower thyroid hormone levels
break down your mitochondria
disturb your metabolic rate
inhibit fat burning
damage the mechanisms by which hormonal signals control your appetite and eating behavior. Leptin is the hormone that tells your brain you are full. Toxins (heavy metals such as mercury or chemical toxins) block these signals.
Over time your brain comes resistant to the effects of leptin, and your are hungry all the time. Exposure to toxins can increase your appetite
Share my painful story of how this happened to me after our house was last sprayed with pesticides….

In additions, toxins interfere with our stress response (our autonomic nervous system) and alter the normal circadian rhythms that control our eating behaviors.

Fatty Liver -The Cause or Effect of Weight Gain?

Fatty Liver
Too many toxins in your body cause: fatty liver. The more problems you have with your liver, the harder it is to process toxins. Fatty liver is the most common liver disease in America, affecting 20 percent of the population. It is caused by the most abundant toxin in our diet : sugar. Increases in sugar or refined carbs increases insulin and insulin resistance, which leads to an accumulation of fat in your liver cells. Increased fat in your liver cells is produced by eating too much sugar, refined carbs and high fructose corn syrup, which causes insulin resistance. Dr. Hyman says some of his patients have developed cirrhosis of the liver from sugar alone!

A fatty liver produces more inflammatory molecules and free radicals and leads to even more mitochondrial damage. Full of fat and inflammation, the liver can no longer protect you from the damaging effects of other environmental toxins which leads to even further damage.

Your Ability to Detoxify: How Your Genes Control Your Detox System

The effect of toxins on anyone is determined in part by the genetics of that person’s detox system. Some people can mobilize and eliminate toxins well; others have more difficulty…that would be me (my note). Getting rid of heavy metals is important. It depends on specific proteins and enzymes that bind to the metals and transport them out of the cells. Even if you are genetically predisposed to problems with detoxification, there are things you can do to cleanse your body of these terrible materials and limit their effects on us. So glad to know these things, and so thankful for my doctors teaching me these things to help me.

Priming Your Detoxification System: Keeping Yourself Clean and Thin

Block your metabolism
Interfere with your weight control mechanisms
Disrupt your hormones
Damage your mitochondria (energy pack of your cells)
Increase inflammation and oxidative stress
Lower Your Thyroid Hormones
Negatively affect your circadian rhythms of eating
Affect Your Autonomic Nervous System

Yes, I have had all the above and more…and we are continuing to work to reverse this…I’m presently undergoing a heavy metal detox under the supervision of my doctors, and continuing to take supplements to detox my liver, replace nutrients, etc.

This is part of the GOOD News: By making some simple lifestyle choices, we can all reduce our exposure to toxins and dramatically increase our ability to mobilize and get rid of stored toxins. In his book, Ultraprevention, http://www.ultrametabolism.com/ultraprevention and The Detox Book, Dr. Hyman review this system in more detail.

EVEN if you are genetically predisposed to have problems with detoxification, you can improve your detoxification system by the following recommendations.

Step 1 Minimize your exposure to toxins.
Avoid toxins as much as you can. While toxins are everywhere, you can cut down your exposure. The two most important are eating organic food as much as possible, and drinking clean filtered water.

Eat organic food. Eat food and animal products raised without the use of petrochemical pesticides, herbicides, hormones, and antibiotics. Farmers markets (Greene St. at the Nativity opens this Thursday!) Beyond Organics,www.beyondorganics.com, Publix, raise your own garden and meats…some of the many choices we have for organic food. Goosepond Farms and Dixon Family Meats raise Grassfeed Beef, Goosepond Farms http://www.raisedonpasture.com/ has chickens, lamb, pork and turkey’s, and the pastures are treated by natural fertilizers to make the soil and grasses rich and healthy.
Drink filtered Water-reverse osmosis and carbon filters are the best systems for detoxifying your water.

Use air filters- My doctor, Katherine Henry in Richardson, Tx sold us two that I really like…it knocks out smells quickly, is small and doesn’t take up much room, you can travel easily with it, and it’s quiet. It’s called the GT 3000 by Green Tec and she had the best prices when we bought ours. You can purchase those from her by calling 1972-234-4777. Another friend sells the Austin Air filters recommended by Dr. William Rea, at the Environmental Health Clinic and I like those too. They are a little bulkier, but they do a great job also. You can contact Alison Walton at 1-405-562-0635 for more information about those.Hepa/ULPA filters and ionizers can be helpful in reducing dust, molds, volatile organic compounds, and others sources of indoor air pollution. I turn my up on days the neighbors are spraying their lawns with chemicals, cause those pesticides come into our homes and poison us, see “Poison in the Grass,” http://www.cqs.com/elawn.htm .

Clean and monitor your heating systems-eliminate the release of carbon monoxide, the most common cause of death by poisoning in America

Keep Houseplants-They help filter the air.

Air out your dry cleaning -(me, I don’t recommend it) but if you do, air it out after you bring it home, before wearing it.
Avoid excess exposure to environmental petrochemicals-including garden chemicals, dry cleaning fumes, car exhaust, chap stick, mineral oil, and secondhand smoke, which contains a ton of chemicals and heavy metals (my addition) http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/Tobacco/cessation Does tobacco smoke contain harmful chemicals?
Yes. Tobacco smoke contains chemicals that are harmful to both smokers and nonsmokers. Breathing even a little tobacco smoke can be harmful (1–3).
Of the more than 7,000 chemicals in tobacco smoke, at least 250 are known to be harmful, including hydrogen cyanide, carbon monoxide, and ammonia (1, 4).
Among the 250 known harmful chemicals in tobacco smoke, at least 69 can cause cancer. These cancer-causing chemicals include the following (1, 4):
Beryllium (a toxic metal)
1,3–Butadiene (a hazardous gas)
Cadmium (a toxic metal)
Chromium (a metallic element)
Ethylene oxide
Nickel (a metallic element)
Polonium-210 (a radioactive chemical element)
Vinyl chloride
Other toxic chemicals in tobacco smoke are suspected to cause cancer, including the following (3):
Reduce or eliminate the use of toxic household and personal care products. Underarm deodorant, antacids, and pots and pans containing aluminum are good examples. See http://www.ewg.org for dangers that lurk in common household cleaners, and personal care products. See also, http://www.everydayexposures.com for common household exposures.

Remove allergens and dust.
Minimize electromagnetic radiation -from radios, TV’s, microwaves, wifi…Dr. Soto keeps talking about how dangerous wifi is for us. Dr. Henry warned me about the radiation from our computers.

Reduce ionizing radiation-don’t overdo sun exposure or medical tests such as x rays.
Reduce exposure to heavy metals-cigarette smoke, predatory fish (tuna, swordfish, shark, tile fish, sea bass) river fish, water, lead paint, vaccines, “silver” fillings, the air we breathe. Check out Dr. David Jernigan’s FB page…about heavy metals. Very informative info about how to detox heavy metals and where they come from… Dr. Rodney Soto in our area is very careful to make sure your gut is healed and liver is detoxed before starting heavy metal detox…www.holisticalabama.com. Don’t try to detox heavy metals without a doctor’s supervision…you can get into real trouble. Been there, done that, got the T shirt and it was painful:)…for several months.

Avoid cooking with Teflon-coated pans
Have one to two bowel movements a day.
Drink six to eight glasses of water a day.
Exercise regularly. Lymphatic massage can improve lymph massage can improve lymph flow and help flush toxins out of your tissues into your circulation so they can be detoxified.

Step 2: Sweat it Out and Sweat It Off:

When I first went to the Environmental Health Clinic in Dallas, http://www.ehcd.com several years ago, I (mitzi) was introduced to using the sauna to remove toxins from our bodies. That is a big part of Dr. Rea’s protocol for bringing healing to his patients. Sauna therapy is amazing but you have to be careful as it releases toxins in your blood stream and you can become overloaded, and you have to replace the nutrients you are sweating out…please do these things only under a doctor’s supervision, who is trained in working with detox.

Eating all the right foods, taking the right supplements and minimizing your exposure to toxins are all good ideas, but how can you prevent stored fat toxins from harming you as you lose weight? Take a sauna. It helps to balance the autonomic nervous system, reduce stress, lowers your blood sugar level, helps you burn calories, helps to excrete pesticides and heavy metals through your skin.

Dr. Rea, used the sauna to detoxify all kinds of chemicals and heavy metals in all of his patients, except those who were too sick to use the sauna…they had to get stronger before they could tolerate the toxic effects of the chemicals coming out of the fat, into the bloodstream, and excreted through the kidneys and bowels. Dr. Hyman refers to workers involved in Ground Zero after 9/11 detoxing in sauna’s…some of those were Dr. Rea’s and Dr. Henry’s patients out in Dallas. Dr. Sherry Rogers, “Detoxify or Die,” http://www.prestige publishing.com and Dr. Jernigan below, recommend the same type of sauna, and most Dr.’s now days recommend the far infrared sauna’s over the conventional one.

Far Infrared Sauna

Weight loss is inhibited when you have high levels of toxins, in part because toxins block thyroid function. When you get rid of these, you keep your metabolism going faster. Sauna therapy helps you release the toxins through your skin as you sweat and you stop storing toxins that cause your metabolism to slow down.
Below I have included an article about heavy metal detox and sauna therapy that my friend Kara posted. I met her at EHCD and she was very, very sick. She is now a patient of Dr. David Jernigan, and works for him, and is doing amazingly well! She shared some of Dr. Jernigan’s post recently on FB about heavy metals and how they affect our health. I encourage you to friend him and read the other posts…they are excellent. I have included one below:

Fm Dr. David Jernigan, Hansa Center, Kansas…
Heavy metal detox is best started with the help of your doctor of natural medicine who is trained in the many nuances of the problem. Once the majority of metals have been removed, there are numerous nutraceuticals on the market that are excellent for ongoing general heavy metal detox.

General guidelines for Heavy Metal Detoxification:
• First identify and eliminate various the sources of heavy metal toxicity, such as we discussed in previous Health Tips. Have your doctor determine the primary heavy metal toxins in your body, either through Bio-Resonance Scanning, Applied or Clinical Kinesiology, or through various laboratory tests.
• Following all of the guidelines for raising low body temperature is a prerequisite to any successful heavy metal detoxification plan.
• Various nutritional supplements, herbal formulas, and metal chelation products have been tested and reported in peer-reviewed journals and found to greatly reduce the body’s load of heavy metals. Always consult with your healthcare professional due to the fact that simply “stirring up” the toxins may just relocate the metals in a more sensitive area of the body causing a more severe malady, and should be therefore not attempted as a home treatment.
• Before any type of detoxification treatment is started or any silver (mercury) amalgams are removed, one must make certain that the lymphatic system is open and able to efficiently clear out the toxins that these treatments will be stirring up inside your body. The best way to address the lymphatic system is the ST8 Lymphatic drainage therapy. It is important to continue ST8 treatments throughout any detoxification program so that the organs of elimination can function without becoming overloaded. Research has shown that chelation therapy, a intravenous method of releasing heavy metals from the body, can be damaging to the kidneys due to the overtaxing of the kidney’s ability to clear out all the metal into the urine.
• Far Infrared Sauna therapy is one of the best ways to release not only heavy metals from deep within the tissues, but also to release all lipotrophic toxins (toxins stored in the fat cells). Far infrared saunas are not to be confused with regular steam saunas which many people cannot tolerate and may aggravate some illnesses. Far infrared saunas do not involve excessive temperatures and the infrared penetrates up to four and a half inches into the body to release deeply embedded toxins and bring them through the skin in sweat to be wiped off with a towel. I recommend the High Tech Health IR saunas. I have written many Health Tips on the benefits of these particular saunas. (HighTechHealth.com)
• Eliminate the causes of Candida/yeast overgrowth and help the body reduce the overgrowth of yeast, mold/fungus that are bound to heavy metals. Once these begin to die off one must be certain to mop up the heavy metals that are now released in the die off debris.
• Research supports the use of homeopathic metals to induce the release of metals from the body. Usually a low potency homeopathic (6x-12x) is best to cause a release of metals from the body. With this form of detoxification, if the goal is to remove mercury from the body, your healthcare professional would use homeopathic mercury in a 6-12x potency. If the desire was to remove aluminum then a 6-12x potency of homeopathic aluminum would be used, and so on.
• Ion-Cleanse Hydrotherapy can be beneficial. (amajordifference.com)
• Drinking distilled water during a metal detoxification program can help remove metals, due to the fact that distilled water is de-mineralized water. This makes it a good chelator of metals as the distilled water can chelate (pull or attract) metals from the tissues so then the body can excrete them via the urine. (General recommendation is up to 3 quarts per day during detox program only) Distilled water should only be drunk during the heavy metal detox program due to the fact that it may ultimately pull beneficial minerals out of the body when used long term.

Step 3: Eat Foods that help you Detoxify:

Dr. Henry first taught me about these special foods after she did a detox gene test on me that showed I have difficult detoxing chemicals. Food plays a major role in priming your system to excrete toxins. Adequate protein is required to supply the amino acids used by the liver to provide the building blocks for the powerhouse of our detoxification system, glutathione. Glutathione is the most critical antioxidant and detoxifier made by the body-and one that is easily depleted in the face of chronic exposure to toxins. If you don’t eat enough Protein , you want be able to produce enough of this important detoxifier.

Phytonutrients are another example of important foods that help you detox. The special molecules found in plant foods boost your detoxification pathways:
Cruciferous vegetables, (broccoli, kale, collards, Brussel sprouts, cauliflower, bok choy, Chinese cabbage, Chine broccoli)
Green tea
Dandelion Greens
Citrus peels
Cocoa…i (mitzi) get the organic cacao powder and make hot chocolate with it! Yummy…i just use water and stevia to sweeten it.

Let food be your medicine and medicine be your food

Step 4: Herbal Remedies to Improve Detoxification

Milk Thistle
Green Tea- drink or as a supplement. Dr. Hyman recommends drinking daily

Step 5: Add Supplements to Support Your Liver and Help You Detoxifying

Extra buffered vitamin C with mineral ascorbates…Vitamin C needs increased in state of toxicity, helps chelate heavy metals, boosts immune system

N-acetylcysteine (NAC) important amino acid derivative helps to boos glutathione and protect the liver from everyday toxic stresses.

Amino acids such as taurine and glycine these are some of the key molecules the liver uses to help detoxify.

Alpha Lipoic Acid-universal antioxidant

Bioflavonoids (citrus, pine bark, grape seed, green tea)
These add color to plants and include: Quercitin, pycnogenol or grape seed extract, Rutin

Probiotics such as Lactobacillus and Bifodobacter help normalize gut flor and reduce endotoxins-toxins produced by imbalances in the gut bacteria.

Step 6: Testing Your Detoxification System and Looking for Toxins-pesticides

Dr. Henry always starts with testing and I appreciate that very much. Get my genes tested really helped me to understand why I have a lot of the problems that I do with chemicals. Gradual weight gain has only been one of my symptoms, I have had a plethora of other troubles along the way. As I get older the weight gain has become more of a concern…but these principles for detoxing take care of all kinds of symptoms…

According to Dr. Hyman, mercury is one of the most important toxins to look for if you are chronically ill. Here are some of the tests you should consider with an experienced physician:

Genetic testing of detox pathways
Measurement of Detox enzymes-gluthione peroxidase
Heavy Metals-
1) Hair analysis, which identifies mercury mostly from fish consumption, not dental fillings
2) Chelation challenge with DMPS or DMSA that help bind to the metals in your body and help you excrete them in the urine where they can be measured
3) RBC or whole blood levels of metals, this usually indicates a recent exposure.

Toxins are a universal problem in the world we live in. They are something we need to be concerned about for ourselves and families for our health and weight loss.

Toxins inhibit the function of our thyroid and mitochondria as well as throwing our hormones out of balance, all of which wreak havoc on our metabolism.

Some people are genetically predisposed to detoxify more easily than others. The good news is even if you have genetic problems with detoxification, you can do some simple things that will make detoxification easier.

My notes: Other good resources on this subject or Dr. Sherry Rogers, Detoxify or Die,
and Clean by Alejandro Junger.

So thankful for Dr. Rodney Soto, http://www.holisticalabama.com who works with patients our area to help with detoxing and replacing nutrients. He is the one who told me about Dr. Hyman’s book, Ultrametabolism when I told him one of my problems was not being able to lose weight I didn’t appreciate it at the time:), but reading and studying the book has helped me understand so many concepts along my journey….I highly recommend getting Dr. Hyman’s book if you don’t already have a copy.

Are You Ready To Be Poured Out As an Offering? (1) Feb. 2, Oswald Chambers, My Utmost for His Highest http://utmost.org/are-you-ready-to-be-poured-out-as-an-offering-1/

If I am being poured out as a drink offering on the sacrifice and service of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all—Philippians 2:17

Are you willing to sacrifice yourself for the work of another believer—to pour out your life sacrificially for the ministry and faith of others? Or do you say, “I am not willing to be poured out right now, and I don’t want God to tell me how to serve Him. I want to choose the place of my own sacrifice. And I want to have certain people watching me and saying, ’Well done.’ ”It is one thing to follow God’s way of service if you are regarded as a hero, but quite another thing if the road marked out for you by God requires becoming a “doormat” under other people’s feet. God’s purpose may be to teach you to say, “I know how to be abased . . .” (Philippians 4:12). Are you ready to be sacrificed like that? Are you ready to be less than a mere drop in the bucket—to be so totally insignificant that no one remembers you even if they think of those you served? Are you willing to give and be poured out until you are used up and exhausted—not seeking to be ministered to, but to minister? Some saints cannot do menial work while maintaining a saintly attitude, because they feel such service is beneath their dignity.

Ultrametabolism Ch.9 Part 2 Harnessing Your Brain Chemistry for Weight Loss

Balance Your Glycemic Load

ALL Carbs are not bad!!! In fat, they are probably the single most important food in our diet, according to Dr. Hyman. We just weren’t made to eat the highly processed carbs, such as chips, most breads, rolls, cereals, cakes, pies, cookies, pasta etc that dominate our diet today. Learning to compose perfect meals means knowing which carbs you should eat and which you should stay away from.

Choosing a diet that has a low glycemic load and is rich in phytonutrients is an important way to control both your appetite and your weight.

Do you remember what the glycemic index is? I confess I had to go back and look on p.46 and 47.

The glycemic load is the effect a total meal has on your blood sugar. It takes into account all the factors, including the effect that mixing carbohydrates, fats, protein, and fiber has on your metabolism.

Typical pasta dinner is heavy in carbs that turn into sugar into your body immediately. Eating white bread with pasta is like adding a tablespoon of sugar to a cola. There is nothing in this meal that is going to slow the rate at which these carbs become sugar.

Another meal that is equal in carbs but turns into sugar slowly is chili beans with a side of fresh steamed vegetables drizzled with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Beans of any kind are high in carbs, but have a very low glycemic load because of all the fiber. Because of the fiber in the beans slows down the rate the carbohydrates are absorbed, they have a low glycemic load or index.

Eating High Glycemic meals spins our appetite out of control, taking us down the road to obesity, heart disease, dementia, diabetes, cancer and early death.

Eat Foods with a Low Glycemic Load and a High Phytonutrient Index and you will ensure a healthy metabolism and optimal health.

Low-GL/ High Phytonutrient Foods

  • vegetables
  • fruits
  • beans
  • nuts
  • seeds
  • olive oil
  • whole grains
  • teas
  • herbs and spices

High Glycemic Load/Low Phytonutrient Index Foods

  • Flour or Flour products
  • Refined Grains
  • Sugar in any form
  • processed foods
  • junk food
  • Large starchy potatoes

Choosing a diet that has a low glycemic tend to be:

  • higher in fiber which slows down your digestive process, meaning you will feel fuller longer.
  • Helps stabilize and balance your insulin levels, decreasing cravings for carbs and sugar thus healing you from insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome

Study done by Dr. David Ludwig of Harvard showed that low fat diets slow your metabolism more than low glycemic load diets do.

Foods that are absorbed slowly ( have a low glycemic load), that are high in fiber, such as whole foods, gains, beans, and nuts, even though they are high in carbs, actually keep your metabolism running faster, burning more calories and creating a harmonious balance of metabolic signals that facilitates a long term weight loss and healthy metabolism.

Eating a low fat diet slows metabolism, eating a low-glycemic load diet increases metabolism.

  1. Eat more fiber-recommended 30 grams per day
  2. Avoid sugar
  3. Stay away from supersugar, high fructose corn syrup.

Going to see Dr. Soto was a startling wake up call to me that I had been living on processed carbs…even though they were gluten free, they had a high glycemic index.

When I got real sick several years ago after our house was sprayed I ate constantly it seemed and could not get full. It was awful. Finally after several years, the LORD led me to the book called “Who Killed Candida?” In that book, I learned about eating whole grains and beans, and it helped me so much to stabilize my out of control blood sugar.

Eat More Fiber-

Fiber is the secret key to a low glycemic load…it’s like a sponge that soaks up sugar, making it burn more slowly in your digestive system.

Advantages of Fiber:

  1. You burn more calories because your body has to work longer digesting your food.
  2. You stay full longer. You’re digesting longer, so you stay satisfied longer and ultimately eat less over the course of a day than if you eat low fiber foods.
  3. You reduce your appetite-slowing down absorption means slowing down the rate at which your blood sugar rises and falls; you want an even metabolic keel, not a roller coaster. Keeping your blood sugar from spiking helps you reduce the insulin spike, reducing your appetite.

Two types of super fibers Dr. Hyman recommends:

Konjac root fiber-five times more powerful than psyllium, oat fiber, or guar gum in lowering cholesterol. Dr. Hyman says that used in conjunction with the healthy diet outline in this book and exercise, konjac fiber helps reduce blood sugar and cholesterol, and facilitates weight loss. See www.ultrametabolism.com for more on information on where to find konjac root fiber.

Rye Fiber- from the whole grain, not rye flour-has unique properties that lower blood sugar and insulin more than other fibers such as wheat fiber. Rye foods also have special phytonutrient compounds called lignans that are chemically similar to human hormones. These have repeatedly been associated with lower cancer and cardiovascular disease risks.

Whole grains in general help control blood sugar and insulin and reduce the risk of obesity, metabolic syndrome, and heart disease. The fiber factor is an important aspect of long term weight loss. It is found in all unprocessed, unrefined, whole plant foods such as beans, whole grains, nuts, seeds, fruits, and vegetables.

Avoid Sugar at All Costs

Carbs with a high glycemic load turn into sugar quickly. We are SWIMMING in SUGAR. The average person eats about 180 pds per year, or about a half a pound per day….some eat more than that! When you eat sugar it sets off a vicious cycle of sugar cravings, increased insulin production, increased appetite, more sugar intake, and more insulin production, until you are in a cycle of craving, binging and crashing all day. This eventually leads to insulin resistance, which is a major contributor to weight gain and rabid aging.

Refined carbs are ever present in our diet. White bread, sugar, pasta, white rice, and white potatoes are all quickly absorbed starches with a high glycemic load that converts to sugar in our body at a very rapid rate. Soft drinks, sugar sweetened drinks, including supposedly healthy drinks like Gatorade, and alcohol contribute to excessive sugar.

Watch out for sugar disguised under other names:

  • corn syrup
  • high fructose corn syrup
  • sucrose
  • glucose
  • maltose
  • dextrose
  • lactose
  • fructose
  • white grape juice or other fruit concentrate
  • honey
  • barley malt
  • maple sugar
  • sucanat
  • natural cane sugar
  • dehydrated cane juice
  • brown sugar
  • turbinado sugar
  • invert sugar

Watch out for added sugars in fruit drinks…high fructose corn syrup is often added and the manufacturer is required only to list the total grams of sugar.

Read your labels to beware of hidden sugars….list in the book on p. 96. Better yet, try to get away from foods with labels. As I was reminded today by my friend Kaye Woode, most of the cans are toxic that our food is in…we need to get away from canned foods.

Stay Away from High Fructose Corn Syrup

One of the great dangers of our food supply is high fructose corn syrup, and ingredient of almost every sweetened or processed food that many Americans consume every day, such as sodas, canned foods, cookies, cakes, baked goods, and frozen foods.

High fructose corn syrup is a supersugar and Dr. Soto told us at the “You’re Not Fat, You are Toxic” seminar last week that the introduction of HFCS into the food supply is associated with the beginning of the obesity epidemic. Other factors such as reduced levels of physical activity, increased portion sizes, eating more than half our meals in restaurants, on the go, changes in the types of foods eaten, moving from a whole food, plant based high fiber diet to a sugary trans fat rich, low fiber low vitamin and mineral diet, and the overall “toxic food environment have certainly played a role too. However the effect of HFCS in soft drinks and other sweetened beverages merits serious consideration as an important cause of the obesity epidemic.

Why is High Fructose Corn Syrup So Bad for Us?

It is absorbed more quickly than regular sugar and enters your cells without any help. It doesn’t require the help of insulin the way glucose does. Once inside the cell, it is made into cholesterol and triglycerides, making the levels shoot straight up and causes problems with your liver that slow down metabolism even more. It produces a fatty liver and is the major cause of abnormal liver function tests in this country. Dr. Hyman says it is probably the biggest reason for the increase in cholesterol levels we have seen in the last 20 years. None of the normal controls on appetite are triggered when you eat foods or beverages containing high fructose corn syrup resulting in increased appetite, calorie intake, and weight gain as well as high cholesterol and high blood pressure.

Stay Away from Artificial Sweeteners!

See blog for latest on Aspertame’s scheme to change name to something else that sounds harmless

One of the side effects of these sweetners is stimulation of hunger through the insulin response…a number of studies show that aspartame may lead to increased food and calorie intake by making your body produce insulin by making it think sugar is on the way. Consequently, your body craves sugar to balance our insulin level, so you eat more food to take care of excess insulin, and this whole pattern disrupts your appetite control system in serious ways. It can lead to insulin resistance which has many serious health consequences.

Studies show that aspartame may disrupt brain chemistry and induce neurophysical changes that might increase seizure risk, depression, and headaches…stay away from them. 100 percent of the industry funded studies conclude aspartame is safe, 92 percent of independently funded research identified aspartame as a potential cause of adverse effects.

Epidemic of Insulin Resistance:

When you eat too much sugar in any form, your body develops a dangerous resistance to insulin. Insulin resistance compounds the initial injury you are doing to your metabolism when you eat excess sugar, making it much harder to lose weight. Insulin resistance has also been associated with every major disease related to aging, including cancer, dementia, heart disease and diabetes. Also leads to other metabolic abnormalities including hypertension, low HDL (good ) cholesterol, high LDL (bad cholesterol, high triglycerides, obesity, inflammation and abnormal blood clotting, increased risk of coronary artery disease, stroke and other diseases caused by plaque build up in the walls

Ask about the metabolic sydrome self accessment test: Dr. Hyman recommends getting tested by a recommended doctor to see if you have metabolic sydrome: If you do, using the principles in this book will help you to reverse the condition.

Step one was the perfect meal composition.

Step 2 : Eat early and Often

Eating in a regular, rhymic pattern at roughly the same time each day will help you eat less, burn more fat, and lower your cholestero and insulin levels. You need to eat 3 meals a day with a couple of snacks, Dr. Hyman recommends…this increases your metabolism when you are eating more often. Eating regular meals heats up your metabolic fire and burns more calories afte eating.

Eating erratically, on the go, away from home, at your desk, or whenever your hectic scheule permits will lead you down the path to constant hunger, greater food consumption, inefficient engery production, low energy level, weight gain, and obesity.

Eat Breakfast

We learned earlier in the book that it is important to eat breakfast to get our metabolism going. Not eating breakfast leads to eating more through out the day not less. Studies show that ones who skip breakfast have higher levels of cholesterol and are more insulin resistant, leading to more weight gain, more heart disease, more inflammation, and all the other age related diseases.

A University of Texas study showed that eating more calories early in the day satisfied more than eating calories later in the day…so eat like a king at breakfast, queen at lunch, and pauper at supper!

The other finding of this study showed that whole foods such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans, and nuts led to a lower intake of calories regardless of the time of day they were eaten.

If you eat foods from refined foods like doughnuts…you tend to eat more calories overall. Eating a good breakfast that is slowly absorbed like eggs, nut butters, a protein shake or whole grains with nuts is MUCH better and helps to prevent metabolic fluctiations during the day.

Eating breakfast is one of the few things accosiated with longevity and a healthy weight.

Eating breakfast “breaks the fast”, brings your blood sugar levels back to normal, kickstarts your metabolism, sets you up to be on an even metabolic keel for the rest of the day….so BREAK your fast in the morning and give yourself more energy, make you healthier, and help you to lose weight.

Don’t Eat Just Before Bed

Eating before bed is a guaranteed way to slow your metabolism and gain weight. Eat supper earlier and try not to go to bed for two to three hours afterwards. When youre asleeo all the hormone and messenger molecules that control your metabolism promote healing, repair, and growth. Also try to eat more lightly at supper by eating more early in the day to help you lose weight and maintain weight loss. Taking a stroll after supper really helps reduce your blood sugar and boosts your metabolism.

Step 3: Enjoy Foods that Control your appetite and avoid foods that send it out of control

In Ch. 16 it shares the basic guidelines for eating in a way that will help you naturally and effortlessly control your appetite. To help us create harmony in our hormones, turn on genes that make us lose weight, and control our appetite, we wiant to concentrae on whole, unprocessed foods that have good fats, a low glycemic load and high in phytonutrients.

Basic Ultrametabolism Whole Real Food Principles

  • Choose organic produce and animal products whenever possible.
  • Cold-water fish such as salmon, halibut, and sable contain and abundance of beneficial essential fatty acids, omega 3 oils that reduce inflammation. A great source of smaller, wild alaskan salmon, sable, and halibut high in omega-3 fats and low in toxins is Bital Choice seafood (www.vital choice.com) Canned wild salmon is great emergency food
  • Eat high quality protein such as fish, especially fatyy, coldwater fish such as salmon, sable, small halibut, herring, and sardines, plus shellfish.
  • Eat omega-3 eggs, up to eight a week.
  • Create meals high in low- glycemic legumes such as lentils, chickpeas, he mentions soybeans, which I don’t recommend. These foods slow the release of sugars into the bloodstream, helping to prevent excess insulin release, which leads to hyperinsulinemia and its related health concerns, including poor heart heal, obesity, high blood pressure, high LDL (bad) cholesterol, and low (good) choleserol.
  • Eat a cornucopia of fresh fruits and vegetables teeming with phytonutrients-carotenoids, flavonoids, and polyphenols-which are associated with a lower incidence of nearly all health problems, including obesity and aging.
  • Use more slow burning low glycemic vegetables such as asparagus, broccoli, kale, spinach, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts
  • Berries, cherries, peaches, plums, rhubar, pears, and apples are optimal fruits. Organic frozen berries (Cascadian Farms, Publix has a small selection)can be used in your shakes.
  • Focus on anti-inflammatory foods including wild fish and other sources of omega-3 fats, red and purple berries (these are rich in polyphenols), dark green leafy vegetables, orange sweet potatoes, and nuts.
  • Eat more anitooxidant-rich foods, including orange and yellow vegetables, dark green leafy vegetables (kale, collards, spinach, etc) anthocyanidins (berries, beets, pomegrantates, ) and purple grapes containing trans-resveratrol, blueberries, bilberries, cranberries, and cherries. In fact, antioxidants are found in all colorful fruits and vegetables.
  • Include detoxifying foods in your diet, such as cuciferous vegetables (broccoli, kale, collards, Brussel sprouts, cauliflower, bok choy, Chines cabbage, and Chinese broccoli), green ea, water cress, dandelion greens, cilantro, artichokes, garlic, citrus peels, pomegrantates, and even cocoa.
  • Use herbs such as rosemary, ginger, and turmeric in cooking that are powerful antioxidants, anti-inflammatories, and detoxifiers.
  • Avoid excessive quantities of meat. Use lean organic or grass fed (when possible) animal products in moderation-beef, chicken, pork, lamb, buffalo, ostrich….Good sources around here are Earth Fare, Publix, Dixon Family Meats www.dixonfamilymeats.com, Beyond Organics, www.beyondorganics.org.
  • Garlic and onions are noted for their cholesterol blood pressure lowering and anitoxidant effects. They are also anit inflammatory and enhance detoxification.
  • A diet high in fiber further helps to stablize blood sugar by slowing the absorption of carbohydrates and supports a healthy lower bowl and digestive tract. Try to gradually increase fiber to 30-50 grams a day and include soluble or viscous fiber (legumes, nuts, seeds, whole grains, vegetables, and fruit) which slows sugar absorption from the gut.
  • Use extra virgin olive oil, which contains anti-inflammatories and anti-oxidants.
  • He recommends organic soy products…i don’t unless they are fermented, and then I am cautious because of some of the negative effects such as damaging the thyroid.
  • Increase your intake of nuts and seeds, including raw walnuts, almonds, macadamia nuts, and pumkin and flaxseeds.
  • And yes…chocolate, only the darkest, most luxurious kind and only one to two ounces a day. It should be at least 70 percent cocoa.

Also, to keep your appetite in blance, there are some foods you need to avoid whenever possible. There is a more detailed list in Chapter 16:

  • Hydrogenated oils
  • Refined vegetable oils
  • Sugars
  • Artificial sweetners
  • High Fructose Corn Syrup
  • Flour products
  • Refined Grains including Organic Gluten Free Cereals, Cookies, Crackers, etc.
  • Junk Food
  • Fast foods
  • Processed foods

Step 4 Certain Herbs that Have Effect on Appetite Control

  • Ginseng
  • Green Tea
  • Fenugreek
  • Cinnamon

Step 5 Use Supplements to Control Your Appetite and Balance the Brain-Fat-Gut Cell Communication

  • Alpha-lipoic acid, a powerful antioxidant that improves glucose metabolism
  • Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) found in evening primrose oil
  • PGX (PolyGlycopleX) or konjac root fiber, special fibers that absorb sugar and fat in the gut.

Step 6: Testing to Find the Cause of an Appetite That is Out of Controlling

I’m not sure why Dr. Hyman put this last…i would recommend it to be first so you can work on the causes and not just be randomly trying things that may or may not help. That is something I learned from Dr. Henry, to test, not to guess, and I appreciate Dr. Soto testing to find out the causes. Find a good holistic, or integrative or functional medicine doctor in your area…if you don’t know where to start looking you can contact www.metametrix.com or contact me and I will try to help you find a doctor in your area who does this kind of testing. When you find one, hang on to them because they are worth their weight in GOLD! These doctors use specific tests that are NOT ordinarily used in conventional medicine to help correct normal flora imbalances in the gut, fatty acid imbalances, nutritional deficiencies, heavy metal poisoning, pesticide poisoning and much more that may be causing your appetite to be out of control.

Dr. Hyman encourages us that making a few simple changes in your lifestyle and your meal composition, timing, and frequency, as well as reducing your glycemic load and inceasing fiber by eating a whole -food diet, can shift your metabolsim from hunger to satisfaction, from weight gain to weight loss, from feeling bad to feeling fabulous.

Your appetite control system is governed by a complex set of interactions between your gut, fat, and brain cells. You can gain some control over it using the six step process outline in this chapter.

Ultrametabolism- Control Your Appetite, Harness Your Brain Chemistry for Weight Loss

Ultrametabolism, Ch. 9 Control Your Appetite

Harnessing Your Brain Chemistry for Weight Loss

13 For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
    your works are wonderful,
    I know that full well.
15 My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place,
when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
16 Your eyes saw my unformed body;
all the days ordained for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be.
17 How precious to me are your thoughts,[a] God!
How vast is the sum of them!
18 Were I to count them,
they would outnumber the grains of sand—
when I awake, I am still with you.

Psalm 139: 13-18

GOD choreographs the “molecular dance” which goes on every second of every minute of every day in every cell in the universe. For the record, once cell has about 200 trillion molecules. He makes note of the smallest seed and the tiniest sparrow. He is not too busy to keep records even of our falling hair. Yet in our darkness we suppose HE has overlooks us. HE hasn’t.” Elisabeth Elliot

The Power of the Gut-Brain-Fat-Cell Connection

In our book, Dr. Hyman shared he was invited to a Summit on Obesity in 2004, a gathering of all the top weight loss experts. He commented on the toxic eating environment of the average American town…fast foods and convenience stores at every turn. He said even if one wanted to, it would be hard to find a healthy meal, and he commented on the super-sized soda’s and refined starches that were so accessible that fueled food cravings and the obesity epidemic.

The man who impressed him the most was the doctor who had struggled with his weight, as he shot up to 400 pds, and had tried every diet imaginable. He even did gastric bypass and still found a way to cheat and regained the weight. He described the feeling an insatiable hunger and craving always gnawing at him. He tried the weight loss suppressant-fen phen, and said it was as if a switch had been turned off in his brain. He wasn’t hungry anymore. He realized that his drive to eat was hormonal or chemical in orgin. …he eventually got off the fen phen because of the dangers of it, but he learned to use his food as his medicine. Rather than food being his poison, through careful use of meal timing and composition, it became his medicine. Dr. Hyman said it was a remarkable example of the power of the gut-brain-fat-cell connection. Getting the signals mixed will lead to misery. Getting them right will lead to good health and weight loss.

Appetite Our of Control

A complex set of chemical interactions among your brain, nervous system, metabolic hormones, special fat cells and immune system makes us your appetite control system. Dr. Hyman calls this the gut-brain-fat cell connection.

When working properly as GOD designed them, they are an elegant machine that pinpoints when you need energy and asks you to consume calories to obtain that energy. But when they go haywire ( and there are many ways for them to go haywire, they cause you to eat when you don’t need to, contributing to weight gain, and almost every other health problem we face.

One of the reasons Americans gain extra weight is their appetite control system is out of balance.Rebalancing and fine tuning is what this chapter is all about.

How well did you do on the Gut-Brain-Fat Cell Communication Quiz?

4 Basic Parts of Appetite Control System

  1. The wiring of your nervous system-autonomic nervous system or wiring connecting the brain, gut, and fat cells. When I went to Texas for the first time, I learned my autonomic nervous system was really out of whack…pesticides…constantly eating and had to eat large quantities to feel stable and full. Started detoxing in sauna and through IV’s and I began to be able to eat less, and eat regular timed meals.
  2. Weight Control Hormones: Metabolic hormones, including the hormones and molecules made by your fat cells.
  3. Command Central Messengers: Brain messenger chemicals call neuropeptides, also go along with neurotransmitters, another term I became familiar with at the environmental health clinic….pesticides and chemicals can mess these up badly!
  4. Molecules of inflammation: cytokines , messenger molecules of the immune system , produced in fat cells ( and white blood cells and liver cells) with wide ranging effects

All these components work together to communicate among all the organs and tissues responsible for managing our weight and keeping us alive. Their signals flow among your stomach, intestines, liver, pancreas, fat cells, endocrine (hormone) system, brain, and autonomic nervous system. Good communication equals a health metabolism. Tell about painters wife who died, gained a lot of weight, we got sick about the same time…

What kind of things mess of the communication of these messengers between one another….pesticides, mold, chemicals, lawn spray

When these things are in balance, weight stays in balance, when they are out of balance….weight gets out of balance. The Ultrametabolism Prescription in the back of the book is designed to keep these messengers in balance.

One of the messengers made in the pancreas and fat cells is called

Gail Clanton’s daughter first who I heard that term from…she worked in the chemistry lab in college….did that get her messengers out of balance?

The key to controlling your appetite is learning how to create harmony among all the parts of your metabolism that make up your appetite regulation system.

Weight Controlling Molecules Creating Harmony

Hormones are the messenger molecules of the endocrine system- including your fat cells! Good estrogen, bad estrogen…produced by plastics the number one pollutant in our bodies

Neurotransmitters are the messenger molecules of the nervous system-

Cytokines are the messenger molecules of the immune system also including your fat cells.

Our CREATOR really fined tuned these molecules and when they are harmonious we have good health and good metabolism. When this process of communication is out of balance, it wreaks havoc on your system. You get hungry after you have just eaten, you store fat when you should burn it, your body starts ignoring the normal signals for appetite and metabolism, and the result is weight gain and disease….

How many of you have experienced this? I have surely have, Gail’s daughter….

6 Ways You Can Influence the Complex Melodies of your Hormone System:

  1. Compose the perfect meals
  2. Eat early and often
  3. Enjoy foods that control your appetite and avoid foods that send it out of control . (check food allergies)
  4. Use herbs to optimize hormonal balance.( make sure not allergic to)
  5. Use supplements to control your appetite and balance the brain fat gut cell communication ( make sure not allergic too)
  6. Consider testing to find the causes of an appetite that is out of control.Allergies,

Step One: Compose the Perfect Meal:

Eat Real Food: Include as many real, whole, unprocessed foods in your diet as possible. Get rid of the fake food you are eating. This is an important step in detoxifying and cleaning up your diet, making you healthier, helping to control your appetite and lose weight. Stop eating foods with labels on them.

Examples of Real Foods:

Whole fruit, not canned fruit or fruit juices

Whole veggies, not canned ones

Wild fish, not farmed fish

Whole grains, not processed wheat

Grass fed beef, not feed lot beef

Nuts, seeds, and legumes or beans, not fried or salted

Eating the Right Fats

Helps you to turn on the genes that help you lose weight and turn off the ones that cause you to gain weight. Fats are one of the key parts of our diet that control genes, weight, and inflammation.

How Fats Help:

  • provide satisfying, slowly absorbed energy that makes you feel full faster and keeps you feeling full longer.
  • Help to lower the glycemic load of the whole meal by mixing with all the rest of the food in our gut and allowing it to be absorbed more slowly before it hits our bloodstream.
  • Healthy fats, including extra virgin olive oil, nuts, coconut oil, and fish oil, contain omega 3 fats helping to form health cell membranes…the outer structure of every cell that controls all the signals and messages coming from everywhere in the body (including insulin). Dr. Soto has an instrument that determines the age of your endothelial lining. Do you remember Mr. ED….endothelial dysfunction….endothelial lines every cell of the body and if it gets messed up, nutrients are allowed to pass back and through the blood to the cells.
  • Key fats , omega 3’s enter the cells and communicate with your DNA to turn on special genes that help you increase fat burning, improved your blood sugar control, correct insulin resistance, and reduce inflammation which is very important in losing weight and regaining your health.

One of the best ways to help people lose weight and regain optimal health is to give them an oil change. A recent study showed that fish oil was above and beyond all else that could be done to prevent heart disease, including prescription drugs.

Dr. Sherry Rogers recommends Carlson Labs, Cod Liver Oil in the liquid…i believe it’s Lemon Flavor. I have been using the liquid Xymogen fish oil and taking approximately a tsp a day.

GET the Plastics Out of US! Dr. Rogers says that plastics are the number one toxin in our bodies, and plastics are estrogen mimics making us fat among other health challenges! Just got this about plastics and BPA from Environmental Working Group:http://www.ewg.org/bpa/.  Check it out!

Psyche Meds Linked to 90% of School Shootings

Dear Friends,

Note: The following article is a new addition to the blog since i wrote it last week addressing the  issue of prescription meds and violent behavior…http://mobile.wnd.com/2013/01/the-giant-gaping-hole-in-sandy-hook-reporting/.  I hope you will take time to read it.

I wrote a blog before CHRISTmas about possible causes of the tragic shooting of the school entitled “Prescriptions Meds, Toxins, and Violent Behavior.” https://hisgraceissufficienthealth.com/2012/12/16/217/ The article was in response to another article i read by Mike Adams how psychotropic drugs are contributing to the violent behavior that we are so often hearing about these days.  I backed up and said that we need to examine the reasons the people are on the drugs to start with…environmental causes such as heavy metals, chemicals, nutritional deficiencies…all of which can contribute to depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive behavior, bipolar disorders, autism, and more.  Over the holidays, i read some more articles that i wanted to share with you about the disturbing behavior patterns we are seeing more and more frequently in our society.

http://www.wnd.com/2012/12/psych-meds-linked-to-90-of-school-shootings/-“Some 90 percent of school shootings over more than a decade have been linked to a widely prescribed type of antidepressant called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or SSRIs, according to British psychiatrist Dr. David Healy, a founder of RxISK.org, an independent website for researching and reporting on prescription drugs.”

This  chart shows the high rate of those using antidepressants that were involved in the tragic school shootings http://ssristories.com/index.php

I am not condemning anyone for taking antidepressant drugs.  Instead look for the causes of the depression, whether they are spiritual, or environmental…and address those causes.  Antidepressants can cause a volatile mix in those already struggling with chemical overloads in their bodies.  Environmental doctors such as Dr. Katherine Henry, Texas Institute of Integrative Medicine, 972-234-4776, Dr. Sherry Rogers, http://www.prestigepublishing.com, and Dr. Rodney Soto, http://www.holisticalabama.com can help you discover the underlying physical, emotional, and sometimes spiritual causes of depression.

Several years ago, Dr. Sherry Rogers wrote a book called, Depression, Cured at Last. She lists in the book several environmental causes of depression including mold, and in her book tells how to address the causes and get well.  I noticed several years ago, when i was in Gatlinburg, Tn, in the woods that i love so much, that i tended to get depressed.  The mold up there from the trees affects me that way.  It is such a blessing to find out what causes us to feel the ways we do, whether they be physical or emotional, or spiritual, and to be able to do something about it. Knowledge empowers us to be freed from a captive situation, whether it is spiritual knowledge of CHRIST coming to save us from our sins, or the knowledge that for some people who can’t detox chemicals too well like me, detoxing our bodies, and staying away from chemicals as much as possible can bring healing and a change of behavior and life.  Think how many broken relationships, divorces, and all could be caused by environmental issues affecting a persons behavior…and how many could be avoided if the root cause was treated and the problem overcome.

http://thebluereview.org/i-am-adam-lanzas-mother/  This link is heartbreaking…it’s not adam lanzas mother, the killer of the elementary children, but it’s a mother like his who is struggling with a son who exhibits violent behavior towards her and she is afraid of him.  She too is searching for the cause. I used to would say, you just need to discipline your child, or your child needs to know CHRIST and have a change of heart.  Those things may be true…indeed every child needs consistent discipline in love, and most importantly needs to know CHRIST as their personal LORD and SAVIOR.  However, when i began to suffer from the effects of chemicals and pesticide poisoning, i never dreamed how chemicals could make me feel just by being around them.  They can make the mildest mannered person mean.  People who suffer from chemical sensitivities can be around a minute amount of something they are sensitive to and it makes them very irritable.  If you add a prescription drug, along with the plethora of other environmental chemicals and toxins we are around daily, we can be asking for a volcanic eruption, literally in a person’s personality. Detoxing the chemicals and replacing the person’s nutrients, are keys in helping a person return to healthy person emotion, physically, and even spiritually.  It’s amazing the difference that detoxing and replacing nutrients makes in a person’s health and personality.  I know because i am one whose life has been dramatically affected by chemicals and i have been so blessed to have  been helped by knowledgable doctors who have helped lead me out of the darkness i was in.

http://www.olivetreeviews.org/news/headlines/item/2505-was-the-sandy-hook-shooter-sinful-or-just-sick?-december-21  This is a good follow up article…are these shootings all because of sin or being sick.  I believe it’s both.

One more thing as i close out this blog…you remember several years ago the lady who drowned her five children in Houston, Tx?  This really hit hard with me because i learned that she was a homeschool mom, and she was also a nurse.  I too was both of those.  This was a CHRISTian family from all i could learn, and they had one of the same posters with the names of CHRIST on their wall that i had on mine.  This really bothered me, and i later learned from an article that Dr. Sherry Rogers wrote that this mom had worked as a chemotherapy nurse. Working around chemo drugs alone could have altered this young mom’s chemistry in her body. Dr. Rogers wrote about nutritional deficiencies and how they can cause us to be mentally unstable until they are corrected.  At the time, this young mom was off of her psychiatric drugs i believe.  I remember she wasn’t taking them.  I am sad to say, my brother in law, killed himself suffering from a bipolar disorder, and he wasn’t on his medication at the time. This brings me back to a difficult place…at the beginning we read an article where the shooters were on antidepressants and they killed…the bottom two i listed were off their meds at the time when they killed and were killed.  My brother in law was a pastor…he knew better spiritually but his flesh was sick. His behavior had been erratic for years.  This young mom who drowned her 5 kids in the bath tub also seemed to be a CHRISTian….it’s time we looked further  than blaming guns and even sin. The mother who drowned her children didn’t have a gun…and  look also at environmental factors that are causing us to display violent, very violent behavior that we don’t understand.  LORD, help us…“My people perish for lack of knowledge.” Hosea 6:4

WARNING, WARNING, WARNING!!! The headline below was on the Dr. Oz show on Dec. 28…

The Long Island Medium: Can Lost Loved Ones Help Cure Your Anxiety?

Stay away from mediums!  Have nothing to do with them!  Deuteronomy 18 -I was horrified to see this headline in my email on Dec. 28.  I knew that Dr. Oz is NOT a CHRISTian,  and having a medium on his show is another indication of what is wrong with our society.  We have turned away from the one true GOD of the Bible and are now consulting mediums. The Bible tells us in Deuteronomy 18 to have nothing to do with mediums. Please use spiritual discernment and discretion when watching Dr. Oz, or reading Dr. Mark Hyman’s books, about everything.   We live in a day and time where more and more of our culture is secular instead of CHRISTian and we must stay in GOD’s WORD to be wise and set apart to be HIS witnesses in this dark world.  “Ye are the light of the world.  A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.” Matthew 5:14

<< Deuteronomy 18 >>

10Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter ina the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, 11or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. 12Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord, and because of these detestable practices the Lord your God will drive out those nations before you.13You must be blameless before the Lord your God.
